Bought one of these 2 days so from Walmart. That model has a very unreliable lockup, but was able to be swapped for another. The one I switched it for this morning is great. Good blade centering, about 40% lockup, great feel and came decently sharp. About 10 minutes on a strop and it's whittling hairs. Only major, and I mean major, gripe is the fact that it send like they use red locktite on the screws, making it almost impossible to disassemble without stripping at least one screw. I've got 6 replacement body screws on order for this reason. A word of advice, oil the pivot as soon as you get the knife home. The action smooth out tenfold after. I've already polished the washers and washer are if there blade and WOW the action is like glass now. Gerber, stop with the red locktite though just STOP!!

Got mine today. I love the style. Easy to open one handed and no movement in the blade like some reviews I read. I gonna have to test it out more to see if I would use this as a back up to my EDC throw down.
I would love to see this in an assistant open too. Great job, Gerber!

Since they updated and changed a few features, this knife has become a favorite. The first was a bit stiff, but this newer one is everything I could want. Love these cleavers and plan on ordering all the rest.

Gerber hit a home run with this knife. Great design, love the weight and feel of the knife in my hand. Size is just right. Nice fit and finish to all of the moving parts.

I pre-ordered this knife. I think it's pretty good, but I think the design could be much better.

1. The one-handed opening: the thumb hole for opening the blade does not provide sufficient leverage to open one-handed. The hole should be more forward on the blade, or some other one-handed opening assist should be provided.
2. I think this knife would be much better as a lock back instead of the liner lock that it is. The blade has enough mass along the spine to make this work.
3. Is it a "cleaver" or a "razor"? The blade seems to thin out very quickly as it moves from the spine. Might want to see some extra mass retained closer to the edge.

I like the choil and the blade shape. I think there is a lot of potential here.

Positive Change (PC) Knife.

This is an knife of inspiration. Bought Feb 1, 2019, I will always carry it to remind me that I can do better.

Excellent design – innovative, functional, and breathtaking. Someone thought outside the box, and started the engineering with a clean sheet of paper. Make the blade functional and strong. Give it the appearance of incredible strength. Finish with brass-phosphor washers for long life and a very strong pocket clip.

Is it perfect? Not by a long shot. Silk screened logos that scratch off, a thumb hole moved too far back, difficult opening, and a blade sharpened with different angles on each side. These problems are the center of it’s new purpose for me.

As humans, we all have excellent design, are equally unique, and innovative if we so choose. Good parents, good family, good friends, and a local community to thrive in makes us as great as we can be. If life gives us shortcuts at any of these, we all realize how bad it can turn out.

Back to the knife. An excellent design with an exported, low-quality support system. Unfortunately, this was off-shored to production in China as a low cost, low quality product . Produce the same knife in the USA, at the reasonable cost it takes to do so, and you have it all – best product that can be handed down for years of enjoyable use.

Would I have paid the difference to have it done right? Absolutely. Would you? I’m betting on it.

So I give this knife the highest rating for what it represents – the best idea limited by a horrible manufacturing decision. Something to inspire me not to make the same mistakes in life. Not to cut corners. Not to make excuses. To support my local community. To be the best I can be at the price required to do so. I will carry my FlatIron with me as long as it lasts. With each use it being a clever reminder that even a cleaver can inspire me to make Positive Changes. To do better.

I hope it inspires Gerber, and others, to do the same.

Definitely underpriced for its high quality. Eagered to utilize it every time I'm in the kitchen or grilling. Not sure why I enjoy the look so much, I leave it open on the table from time bc how appealing it is. Overall solid build, definitely should own it.

Awesome concept, has some weight to it. Blade was decent upon arrival, everyone wants one everytime they see it.. Pocket clip is tight, keeps the knife in place. Great for camp cooking or a random cheesecake. Got to be ready for anything.

This knife is legit. Solid blade, sure handle. Good for a unique EDC and a great travel blade for mid trail snack time. We travel for Thanksgiving every year and typically find ourselves in a temporary kitchen with shotty cutlery. Fortunately I had my Flat Iron as my travel carry and it made quick work of chopping up our Thanksgiving Turkey. Actually, it was so adept at gliding through the meat that I chopped the wishbone clean in half. Verdict - friends and family were finely sliced turkey happy; kids without a wishbone for the year...not so much! Lol.

For the life of me I can’t see how this knife is getting such low reviews. I’ve been rocking it as my edc since it’s release now and I’ve been having a hard time even considering switching it out with a different knife. I’m loving the clever blade and the pocket clip keeps it in place so well it’s probably the first knife I’ve had that I haven’t even worried that it would fall out. I also don’t have a hard time opening it one handed in either hand like others have complained about.
So in conclusion if you are a male that always carries a knife with you as a handy tool/defense item than start acting like the man you’re trying to make people think you are and stop complaining.
Are there better knives out there? Of course
Are there worse knives out there? Absolutely
But of all the knives out there not many of them dominate their price range like this knife does.

This knife is a nice EDC knife. I found it easy to operate with one hand. I may have small thumbs compared to others.
It is a cool shape that may not be for everyone but was a great conversation piece at Thanksgiving.
I really like the cutout on the blade to choke up if you are whittling something small and need some precision. Mine came sharp out of the box and ready for daily use!

Been using this thing as my daily driver for a little more than 2 months now. I honestly can say it’s my favorite Gerber knife! And I have quite a few of them. Plenty sharp, well waited, and super steady plus it feel good in the hand. If I could give it 6 stars instead of 5 I would. Would recomend!

- Really did not like the half plastic / half metal style grip.
- The pocket clip is ridiculously tight. It's almost impossible to get it on a pair of jeans or slacks without using two hands. From past experience, such a clip will destroy the edge of your pocket rather quickly.
- The action on the liner lock is very sticky.

2 weeks out of the box I loved it. I batoned it for literally 30 seconds on a small piece of pine as I was making kindling and the piece that holds the knife in place broke. Really? On a less than an inch thick piece of pine? Waste of money.

Too, too bad. The concept was good, the result is very very bad.
1. The Grind - i've had to sharpen it by myself.
2. The Lock - the surfaces of the frame lock don't fit each other, at the same time they are in very bad condition. The "teeth" on the lock is the second problem - they are too aggressive, the lock doesn't work the way it should work, and they just hurt the finger.
3. The thumb hole - the blade isn't sharp.. the hole is sharp.
4. The stopper on the frame lock is awful, it looks like a frightened frog. Its design is like a childs nightmare.

This knife is definitely a great idea. The knife is very well built, especially for such a low price and It came sharp enough for general edc tasks. I love the ability to choke up on the knife via the finger choil and the knife feels very well balanced for what It is. However, there is a lot that could be improved on. Like a lot of reviews I have seen, this knife is near impossible to open right handed. The problem is that when pushing into the thumb hole to open the knife, you are pressing the blade into the liner lock which makes It impossible to open. Instead, I found that using your right thumb and middle finger to pull the blade out allows for one handed opening. On the other hand, (literally) the knife is able to be opened using the thumb stud since you are not applying extra pressure into the liner lock. However, the knife is right handed pocket carry only. To solve this problem, perhaps the addition of a thumb stud could help as It would relieve some of the inward pressure that pushes against the liner lock, and relocate the pressure away from the handle. Additionally, making this knife a flipper would be awesome. (but maybe too wide?)

Just recieved my Gerber Flatiron after anxiously awaiting it's arrival!

Let me start by saying that I love the style and profile of the blade. The edge has nice thin geometry near the edge, but a big fat meaty spine. Love that. I already love clevers being a chef, and stylistically this thing delivers.

The handle with G-10 feels like a nicer knife, and contruction/fit and finish overall are great. Has all the hallmarks of the very popular framelock folders with the hinderer-esque overtravel stop on the lock. As far as the pivot goes, it's super tight out of the box, but a quick squirt of CLP and it's free swinging and smooth.

As far as the blade steel, the 7CrMoV is kind of a nightmare, being similar to the low-end 440a, but I knew that's what I was getting. After all, I have had some ok experiences with these Chinese designer stainless blends. When done right, the CrMoV steel's can be downright adequate. This is not one of those cases.

Now to the bad. The grind is a dumpster fire. Uneven, skewed to one side, and slightly over-ground near the tip leaving an awkward ramp-like final 1/4". It's not sharp, not even a little. Won't even break skin on a tomato, let alone push cut paper, as it was more of a rip-and-crinkle. Steel feels a bit soft, and won't take a good edge despite my best efforts.

Secondly, the thumb hole. Wow. This is not ergonomic by any definition. The hole is too small, and nearly impossible to open with just your thumb. I have been opening it by reaching around and opening it with two fingers, but have now put a zip-tie in the hole (spyderco style), and that seems to work. Pretty rediculous that you can't use it as intended out of the box.

To me, this is a great concept gone wrong. I will likely carry this sometimes but it's just such a shame. If this allowed for the clip to be moved to tip-down position, the action worked well (or had a flipper), and had decent knife steel (I'm not asking for elmax but something respectable), I would happilly pay over $100.

Swing and a miss by Gerber
