I love gerber tools and I really love this one since it's spring loaded and very easy to use compared to some of my other gerber tools. My only major issue is the sheath. Mine just came a part the other day. The stitches holding the loop on the upper prtion just came apart. Other than that this tool is great.
Use this at work. Great tool to have. Use it to work on my bus and trucks. saved me many times.
A great multi-tool! This little gem has helped me and several friends out over the last few months that I've had it. A leather carry case would make this a 5 star item.
I've had the Gerber Suspension for about 6 months. The other reviews are correct, the bundled nylon sheath is terrible. Mine is frayed and I always half expect to reach for the tool and it the sheath has broken off and i've lost it. The tool itself is great and I don't know how I got around day-to-day without one for so many years. Upgrade the sheath and you're set.
Pros: They look pretty. Also the spring for the pliers is pretty neat.
Cons:
It only took two weeks of being my every day carry to break them. With the rear-most wire cutters on the pliers, I attempted cutting a length of solid 14 gauge wire, and the right jaw of the pliers broke off, just above the hinge.
This multi-tool is ridiculously heavy Also it feels Clunky in your hands while using the tools in the handle
Other thoughts:
Would make a nice little "first multi-tool" for a kid, but definatly not going to save your life any time soon. Spend the few extra bucks for a better quality multi-tool
got this tool for christmas and was very impressed with the tools and the locking system. i do agree that the sheath should be made out of leather so that it lasts longer. overall a great tool
Great tool. Ill be honest. I love it. I never leave the house without it. It's great, I use it for everything. Unfortunately, the sheath isn't great and should be remodeled. Also I was mad about the shipping service. I ordered the 2 day UPS for $10 dollars, and it ended up coming 3 days instead of 2.
I do a lot of walking and deal with a great amount of things. This tool comes in very handy, but after only 3 shifts at work, the case has started to fall apart. The dual belt straps is a great add, the outer lining around the case starts to unravel. A leather case would be great maybe even a polymer type one too. But please don't change the tool, it is great and that is the main part.
had one before and came with set of different bits and holder.
new one just bought another and now no bits and the cross bit on this is useless.
and the holder very cheap.
I have this tool and it's a solid piece of gear. I am a tinker use it daily and it doesn't ever disappoint. I know how to use tools, and as a former Infantry Marine, I know how to abuse them. I would trust my life with multitool.
I love this tool. I used in Iraq but just like evryone else says, the sheath sucks and needs better material.
Great tool... but the but the case needs serious work - doesn't hold up very long. Need to design a leather case option for this multitool.
JAN 4 2013
I HAVE THE GERBER SUSPENSION THAT I BOUGHT IN SEPT OF 2011 I WORK FOR A FRIENDS MOWING SERVICE AND I CARRY THE MULTI TOOL EVERYDAY IT DONT GET USED ON A DAILY BASES JUST WHENEVER THE JOB CALLS FOR IT TO BE USED. WE USE THE WIRE CUTTERS TO CUT WEEDEATER LINE TO THE CORRECT SIZE TO PUT ON WEEDEATER. I FIND THAT THE MULTI TOOL IS A LITTE HARD TO GET OUT OF THE NYLON SHEATH OTHER THAN THAT IT IS A AWSOME TOOL I ALSO USE IT CAMPING ON WEEKENDS FROM APRIL 1 TILL NOV 1
Great knife couldn't ask for a better tool. Used it for two years on many of trips and haven' t had one problem.
Love the design and function of the Gerber SUSPENSION multi-tool. Have taken this tool on two day expeditions and really like it's practical design and ease of access to the outboard tools. This is a great general purpose tool suitable for outdoor use. The small blades and saw do limit it's use a little. But overall, I am very impressed with the tool and the small blades are easy to work with.
I have seen many nice multi-tools in my scouting career, but i've never seen any tool like this...
Pro: Good durability and some very heavy duty tools.
Con: Redesign sheath and the locking mechanism was very stiff when I took it out of the box, but I just had to work it in.
Overall: I love it and would never give it away. (:
the tool is great , the sheath should be changed , it only last about 6 weeks .. I use this tool on adventures to the Amazon and I love it .. found an old leather sheath that works well with it
I have used this tool for about four years. No problems with the tool, but I would agree about the case material needing a redesign.
Great tool, far superior than a leatherman but the pouch is not up to the job.why don,t you make a decent leather pouch for it?
Loved This tool up until the point of it breaking .
Great tool but some work could have gone into the sheath to make it really outstanding.
I've had mine for about 7 years. I love the tool and use it everyday, but just like everybody else says, the sheath is cheap. The stitching came apart within a couple months. I have it shoddily sewn back together, but the quality of the sheath needs to be improved.
A good little tool and it always comes in handy for any type of job. Had it for 6 months now and nothing has failed me yet. Not even the sheath.
My go to tool in a world where the show must go on. I have had it for five years and it is pretty much everything I need minus a c wrench and flashlight. A hidden feature is the holes on the side can be used to open shackles.
Have to agree with engineer on this one. The tool is fantastic when I can use it. However, it's a little difficult to carry around without the pouch, which only lasted about a month for me.
Recently, I read a review where someone said 'who uses these things for the pliers - really'. As a well experienced and aged mechanic, I can honestly say that this tool has mostly eliminated my other needle-noose pliers, which were good Craftsman tools. The grips feel very good in a hand that is used to working with tools for a living, and the spring tension allows 'em to be used for long periods of time without any fatigue.
If the pliers are used strictly to grip and turn in a linear motion, then they are great – if any side to side tension is introduced, they WILL sheer off; the design is good, but the metal quality is quite poor in composition and strength. In terms of comfort and feel, these hands-down win over everything in my tool box. Though if I need to do anything where the clamping can suffer torsional force, then an awkward feeling but reliable craftsman or snap-on set of needle nose will need to be used.
Most of the tools are quite good for general use. The knife blade sharpens quite well, the flat-tip screw-driver bit is decent and the scissors are out-of-the-league-GOOD! I constantly use mine for cutting thin metal and plastic, when I don't feel the need to grab another purposed tool for that job.
Other than the metal for the pliers being very poor, the Philips bit is about as useful as a limp dick; why even bother with a '#2 bit' if you're only going to give us two full size spades and two undersized. The amount of force required to press this tool into a reasonably well torqued #2 machine screw or wood screw is unreasonable. A machine screw torqued to 10 ft/lbs will unscrew quite easily with a traditional screwdriver, yet 'this' tool will require you to press your body weight against it, just to assure you're centered well and you don't accidentally slip and round out the screw.
Other than these two flaws, the multi-tool is quite solid for general purpose use. If stronger pliers were added and a fullsize #2 Phillips bit were included, I'd be happy to pay twice price. :)
I have a gerber suspension multi tool that I use working for a friends mowing service we use it to cut weedeater string when ever the weedeater runs out of string this tool does everything that we need when out mowing
I've had mine for five years and counting. Each tool is easy to open/access and even close with one hand.
Like other reviews, the sheath was really disappointing. I've had to do some hand-stitch repairs to keep the belt-loop on. Another thing is sometimes the spring on the scissors pops to the side, but I don't use them often so it isn't a big deal for me but it may be for others.
great tool i like the spring loaded pliers. i also like the feel in hand of the tool and the easy fast access of the tools outside the handles also the locks on the blade tools work well. the sheath does need to be better.
I love the tool but the sheath is a POS. It did not last a week. I did not buy this because it was low price. I bought it for quality. I would have gladly paid more a good sheath. right now, it's useless because I cannot carry it.
Great small multi tool ,highly recommended.Would be 5 stars if the sheath didnt let it down ,tool sticks inside making it hard to get out and stiching is coming apart. The tool itself is great for what it does!!
I use this thing for everything, I'd definitely buy it again!
the ONLY negative is the sheath is below par... I'm currently looking for a replacement.
Have had my tool for at least 10 years. works GREAT!!! BUT the sheath SUCKS!!! lasted about two weeks!!! been through 2 before i just threw it away.
Superior tool , Inferior sheath. My sheath literally came apart at the seams I almost lost the tool. You need to beef up on the on the carrying component.
The two bad reviews below are just bad reviews by stupid people. If the locking mechanism were to fail, which I doubt, that's a product default (especially if it only happened in 3 days) and gerber has a lifetime warranty on all their tools. I work on harbor boats on the mississippi river and I've had my suspension for around six months. I've used it for everything from unscrewing doors off of industrial kitchen coolers (in the galley on board a line boat, did a stint there for about two weeks) to fixing and repairing hoses, pumps, etc. The only bad thing about it IS the belt case which broke after maybe three months, then I flipped it and used it the other way before it broke again. And maybe the scissors. I mean, the scissors are extraordinarily good for something on a pocket tool, but don't expect them to cut through tougher materials. All in all, I was impressed enough that I'm keeping the suspension as an every day tool and I'm looking for a gerber with tools that are more suitable for the work I do.
Handy tool. Lousy sheath. For the 3 weeks I was able to carry the tool to work on my belt, I got a lot of use out of it. Once the sheath ripped I tried carrying it in my pocket but it's a little too bulky for that.
The belt holster sticks, only have had it 2 weeks and it broke, make me think in 4 weeks the whole knife might fall apart
Nice tool but the scissors don't work well.
A great tool!!The two knives came razor sharp, the pliers feel strong and I have already cut snare wires with it,the saw is kind of small but i guess it was meant for small cutting task, though the saw is not as sharp as a saw on a swiss army knife but its still ok,The scissors are really nice, they feel like shears , the rubber pads are great they make the tool really comfortable.Still its great.
Things i don't like are the studs for the safety mechanism, they really hurt your fingers if you use this tool a lot , next is the sheath, Gerber should make the sheath a little bigger so that the tool can fit in more and can close it more securely, add more velcro on the sheath and make a more sturdier sheath as a lot of people have complained it being torned up easily.
overall a great tool if you don't want to spend to much money on a multitool. I don't live in the US so multitools like Leatherman are really pricey. They cost about 200 or more for Leathermans and about 100 or more for Gerber products in Asia.Just hope that Gerber 's warranty covers my product because i live in Asia.So if you want a good but not too pricey multitool go with the Gerber suspension or the evo.
I love the tool, but the locking system has proved difficult to use. It refuses to budge unless I use both hands and is stiff if I don't use it every couple of hours.
Had this knife for about 5 years and I wear and use it constantly. Excellent bit of kit, just starting to show signs of wear in the action and locking mechs on one side now. Must have an older model pouch as it is solid. 5 stars.
Tool is good enough. Sheath sucks. Velcro ripped out first month of use.
so i'm not alone. the sheath tore after just a few days of use and it seems that it isn't covered under the Gerber lifetime warranty, we have to buy a new one. hope its better than the first one.
the tool is great, love it!!
Awesome tool!! Use everyday.comparable to any leatherman tool but more affordable.love the spring action.
Great multi-tool, but disappointed in the sheath. It's ripped a couple times. The nylon needs to be sturdier if you're going to wear it on your belt consistently.
first time tool was used blade locking mecanisem failed missaberly highly disapointed locking system bent backward while cutting a slot in a peanut butter lid dont bother with this one
I have used this multi tool for only 3 days of occasionnal use and I have to admit that I was quite disapointed with the purchase and I will list why.
-The two knifes didn't came that sharp out from the box.
- The Saf.T.Plus locking system died almost instanly and all my blades are running loose when in use.
- Rust appeared on the pliers.
- The in-hand feel when using anything other than the pliers is uncomfortable.
- While using the pliers, the other tools are loose and start to open themselves in your palm which is quite dangerous.
- The sheath breaks down because of poor sewing points and overall poor fabric.
- The saw is ridiculous, the teeths came almost round and I had to pull out my good old Victorinox to finish the job properly.
- The unlocking slide buttons are also quite painful after multiple uses.
I love this multi-tool. It works great for whatever I've needed it for, and is very sturdy. Only drawback is the sheath like others have said, only because it seems a bit weak and I'd rather not loose this tool because of it. Other than that, I would highly recommend this tool.
Sheath was very poor quality. Fell apart in a matter of week, with ripped stitched and seams.
The tool design is excellent though- Access to everything but the pliers without opening the knife, one handed blade and lock operation, and access to everything but the saw (which is probably the least functional blade on the tool) even with gloves on.
My only complaint is that I snapped the tip off one side of the pliers, which makes life frustrating sometimes.
I got this two or three weeks ago and it hasn't failed me at all. Great set of tools, sharp knives. The only thing I didn't like was the shealth: Its not falling apart, but the velcrow is a little weak. Except for the shealth its an all around great multi tool. I'd recommend it to anyone!
This tool is exceptional in design and usefulness When my belt goes on so does my GERBER. It has performed many tasks that got me out of a jamb while hunting, fishing or other. The sheath is the problem although I must say it was used a lot. I don't want to lose the tool so I must rely on a good sheath. Can I get a better replacement?
I too am very disappointed in the sheath...in my line of word a sheath is very important not only for quickness and convieniance to keep machines going but for comfort too...im NOT going to walk around with it in my pocket lol. my sheath started falling apart a week after i got it which was about 3 weeks ago but other than that i LOVE this tool. PLEASE FIX THE SHEATH. a heavy duty tool deserves a heavy duty sheath!!
Love my Multi-pliers. Wear it daily. Just like my phone I wouldn't leave home without it. Performs well; outstanding.
My only disappoinment is the sheath. It started falling apart soon after I purchased the tool. To keep the tool practical and useful the sheath is essential.
Where can I get a new one?
Compared with similar price point products of other manufacturers, this tools is better enginered. I paid the same for a leather man wingman and the wingman had play between the pliers nose, and had no locking mechanism on most of the tools. Has a nice feel in the hand. Recommended unless you need more bells and whistles
Having trouble finding parts
I squeezed the pliers together and broke the locking mechanism art i think
i bought this tool at Kandahar airfield. and after 2 months the locking system broke.
i am still using it because it is very usefull. but a bit inconveniënt that the locking mechanism is broken.
as a mechanic i use it for my work daily
I've had mine for 5 years good tool a little cheaply made and the sheath sucks I had to sew it 3 times so far but the velcro is worn out c'mon gerber make a real sheath
I am a Combat Engineer, love this tool however cant use it at work as like so many other people, the sheath broke so now it sits in a drawer which is a shame as I used it for everything. Had a few problems with the locks but sent it back and got a new one and havent had a drama since, just need a new sheath so it can go back on my belt where it belongs
Broken after one year, replaced under warranty in short time.
Professional after sales service.
TNX
This thing is great. I never leave the house with out it. All the tools you need right in one place.
very durable i use it a lot camping and fishing i''ve dropped it in lakes it does not rust and. its built very good. its my go to knife for everything
I love this multitool, I use it for everything from stripping wire to working on pumps and motors!
I have never had it fail me but one must understand it's not an 18" pipe wrench!
I have one in each of my vehicles, home & work toolbags & my motorcycle.
I especially like the spring loaded pliers!
I am now officially a Gerber baby!
Have lost mine in the last few days, I loved it used it most every day sometimes several times a day. Funny how they are $10 cheaper at Amazon so will get two, then never without one
Its a great tool for going fishing and doing light jobs. It's handy but its heavy and I'm afraid to put to much strain on it. The peice of metal that keeps the tools from running into the rubber grip at the base of the handle already busted off on one side. I wish I was able to use it for heavier jobs without the fear of some piece busting off and flying back at me.
I have bought many of these, I dont know, more than five. I have bought many because I really like how they function tools on the outside pliers inside but with handles you can still grip, and if they break? Gerber lifetime warenty.
The Good:
Tools on outside
Suspention makes for easiest one hand use even in tricky little holes you can't see into.
Both a straight knife that is easy to sharpen and a serated blade for other tasks.
The bad:
Bent design of screw drivers is a constant battle in most jobs that are already tricky.
A two inch saw?! WTF?! What can you cut with a two inch saw? Give me a metal bastard file or something we can use... A two inch saw?! For real? Seriously?
The pouch that comes with the tool is a poor joke, rips first time it snags anything (not good on a 300' ladder. That could kill someone.
Rather cheap tool. The pliers will break with any side load.... Any... Trying to twist a zip tie in half busted one pair. The locks are O.K. At least at keeping The blades from closing, they will snap backwards if you are stabing something (like an oil bucket) to let it drain faster.
Bottom line: I love this tool in particular, it works in many jobs I have repaired 230V chain hoists with this tool alone, When you have nothing else having this tool will save the day. I have used leathermans supertool 300 and thier charge XTI. For the money ($29.95 at most stores vs. supertool at $80 and the charge at $140) this little guy is worth it and when I have a box of busted ones I might take them in, right now it is better to keep buying them with what gas costs. Each of these tools ussually lasts about two or three months of serious but not abusive service. I use this more than any other tool because it is always on my belt... The sheath has gotten far too cheap though... I usually buy gun magazine pouches instead the ones that come with the tool. The included sheaths are junk that wont last you climbing under a single gearbox, if they even make it up the 300' ladder.
Broke the first day i got it...
Like the pliers, and they feel rather comfy on my hands. Tools are ok, saw and blades are kind of short, but still get something done. Only complait I have is that the tools on the plain edge knife side are a bit wobbly and when one of the tools is locked, the others can fall out of the handle and undo the lock quite easy, so everytime you operate the knife open or close you have to remember it, or you might end up with a small cut on your fingers. but when you hold the tool/operate, your fingers keep the other tools within the handle and prevent it from unlocking. But on the other side with the serrated blade they work/lock great without any problems. When all the tools are closed and you wave the tool from side to side, the plain edge sides tools jump out from the handle, but not enough open on themself, but still enough to notice it quite clearly. But as long as you do not open any of the tools they stay somewhat in place. Makes the tool completely un-useable? No. But it is something that you have to take into concideration everytime you operate the tools in that handle.
So far so good..........
This is one of the best knives i have i am constantly using it and it never fails me but the scissors do get a bit sticky
Good all round tool, unfortunately one of the two white metal plates which form part of the return mechanism snapped with relatively light use. It still works but the tools on that arm now articulate back further than they should.
Also the screwdriver head could be made of harder metal as it wears a bit easily and the scissor spring is real badly designed, it always slips out of place. Otherwise a sturdy tool. Just disappointed its not as good as I first thought.
mine broke in the first week I had it. I was so upset over it that I spent another 70.00 and got a Leatherman. If I knew where to ship this one, I would send it back to you, and you could do whatever you want with it!
I have had this for nearly 5 years now of heavy every day use as a welder. The wire cutteres are the best I have used in a multitool for cutting .035 and .045 welding wire, he blade keeps it's edge well and the lock is rock solid. I wear the sheath horizontally and had no problem with it tearing but I do have problems with the velcro holding up, it has slipped out and I have "lost" it a couple times and had to go searching. I finally got a MW phone case that works much better as a a sheath.
I had this tool for a couple of years. It broke while is was trying yo fix my atv in the woods. I sent the tool back to Gerber for repair. It was less than 1 week, and Gerber sent me a new one. Hard to find a company these days that still know how to treat a customer. Keep up the great work Gerber.
I agree the sheeth was not great but I used a small size pepper spray holder and it works great.
I love this tool it is great and works very well
I just had the little trangle peice break off teh blade and the catch is hanging up but I have it off to gerber to be fixed.
While this tool is a ergonomic useful tool, I agree with the Reviews...the sheath is sub-standard to the tool! I've just experienced the belt loop tearing this past weekend just to a few threads left! The only solution I've been able to locate is to purchase the Gerber 22-49445 10-Piece Tool Kit as a replacement to the sheath! The Ideal solution would be for Gerber to Warranty the sheath and replace it with an upgraded version! Gerber???
The tool is great but it sits in a drawer as the belt loop on the sheath tore the threads and came apart. This happens because the tool gets stuck in the sheath (poor design) and getting it out puts undue stress on the weakest part of the sheath. I gave only one star because a great tool left in a drawer due to lack of attention to detail (the sheath) makes this junk!
Owned this just under a year. Bought on special, suspect I got factory seconds although nothing this shoddy should ever have left the shop if gerber wanted to keep their reputation. Poor locking, plenty of play. Washers need to be in specific positions for the locking mechanism to work however 80% of the time (on the serrated side) they skip their engagement, rotate, and cause the whole locking mechanism on that side to malfunction. The sheath lasted ~8 months, but even well before then the tool would often catch on removal/replacement and the thin nylon belt loop causes it to flop around a far bit even on belts only slightly narrower than it's max. Also the scissors spring skip over the side of the scissors before they are half engaged.
All in all it works, but I won't be buying gerber again. I have a leatherman on order to try out, and(being one of those people who never throws anything out) plan to chuck this thing into a bug out bag as a last resort.
I haven't found a new sheath as of yet, so I can't use the tool. The Velcro is a joke and a half, then the belt loop to keep the tool vertical is to torn. I am very disappointed. I received this as a gift. I always thought Gerber was a very good product, I'm not so sure anymore. I'll give the knife 3 stars but minus 10 stars for the sheath.
Crosspoint screwdriver was utterly useless until I spended 2h grinding it to shape (same proplem on other specimen I have encountered). Operation of pliers requiers BIG(ger) hands (I buy gloves size L ).
Over all a good tool but I prefer my MP800.
Love the tool but the sheath is a joke. First had to replace it because the tool wouldnt come out of the sheath. Now the belt loop is torn half off and Im afraid im gonna loose it. found the old sheath and it has the same issue. Gonna try to get a third sheath now.
I've had my Suspension for about four years now, and aside from sharpening the blade once and having to re-grease the joints, this is the best multi-tool I've ever had. The tool locks are great.
I've had it on me every day of those four years, and it has served me well on each one of them
Given to me by a friend and is very well made and has helped me to do a quick fix when I'm in the truck on the road or out in the bush to cut or open tin food in my 4WD in Australia.
love the tool but the sheath is a pain in the but to get the tool out of do you have a leather sheath that the tool will fit in and is easier to get it out of.
Not durable, First time I used the blade something broke and now half the tools over extends/don't lock open. Next time the wedge that gives grip to open the blade came off.
I like the idea that it doesn't require complete opening to use the fold out to
Bought the suspension at canadian tire, came to your website to contact you to tell you that you should include a guide or some sort of info in your product packaging, then i saw the price you charge as opposed to the price I paid, Canadian Tire was not t
I just bought this gerber multi tool in sept because I had to send my Leatherman mult tool back and could not stand to be without one being I carry one all the time . I switch back and forth between my leatherman and the gerber what I like about the Gerbe
i love this tool the sheath sucks but the tool has gone 3 years of auto repair work and fishing/camping hasnt rusted with all water it been in unlike my leatherman
I just bought this gerber suspeension multi tool yest but have not had a chance to use it but i work for a friend lawn care bus. So i fig it will get tried out really quick . I bought this to replace my Leatherman kick if this gerber serves me as well as
great tool .. I have gone thru 3 tools in 2 years ..love the tool , hate the sheath .. I wear my tool on my belt every day of the week .. have had two sheaths break off my belt and lost ! I still love the tool
man this thing is awsome i use it every day hunting , fishing, and everything else i do thank you gerber.
The nickname "gerber baby" applies to me after 6 years of use of my suspension.I've been thru more girlfriends and pants in as many years. Yet my gerber is still by my side.
This is a killer little tool, has unlimited uses and has yet to fail me. I keep it in my car for those "just in case" moments and bring it along whenever I go camping.
The turkey hunter’s mantra, and the reason behind the creation of the turkey vest, is simple: It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Given that there are approximately 1,001 items of gear available to hunters, it can be daunting to figure out exactly what’s necessary for a trip into the woods. Here’s what I carry. Oh yeah, I also bring my shotgun and some shells. Pocketknife or Multitool: I usually have both. I keep a folding blade in one of the shell loops and a sheathed Gerber Suspension Multi-Plier (gerbergear.com) in an inside pocket.
