Having this knife about 3 months. Its a workhorse for my chiors. Cuts and kindles firewood. Cuts 4ft 2x4 board. down in the middle of a board. And using a hammer or stick to help.demolition an old wooden shed with it. Very tough what ever job is use for. I carry a small sharping stone in the two straps of the sheath. I like the leg strap when Carring with pulling the knife out for use. Sheath is snugg and rugged.
I have many Knifes, custom and production. this is one of the best i own all around. For (PERFECT) you can always remove the bottom of the two straps. i don't think that would affect your lifetime warranty on the knife it self. But to be safe you can ask Gerber rep..
State of the art design and solid construction, balanced, sharp as ( ouch! ), and intimidating enough to cause almost anyone to say, "Please put that away." Even so, granting that request airs professional functionality with several carrying options not easily found elsewhere. A valuable heirloom to any surviving generation of what is coming!
The knife definitely deserves no less than 4 stars. I'm giving it 5 stars due to the weight and feel. Not too big and not to small. I don't dislike serrations but wish there weren't as many. the sheath, in my opinion cannot be improved upon .Good piece of hardware with this package.
I bought this knife as a birthday gift for someone else, but after checking it out before wrapping it...I fell in love with it instantly and went back and bought one myself. After testing it out in the backwoods on and off for about a week or so...all I can say is...WOW. I have the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival knife and I really like it, but the Prodigy just seems to be more beefy to me...it feels really good in the hands, has a great grip, and is all around awesome. I have a vast collection of knives and this one is now my favorite and will be the one that I will always take with me any time that I am out in the woods, camping, etc. It is by far the best knife for the money hands down.
I found quite a while back that a good piece of of Tungsten TIG electrode (either pure or lanthanated) in 1/16 and either 3/32 or 1/8 are a boon for field touch up of a serrated knife blade. A 3" chunk of rod doesn't take up much space and will help maintain a keen edge on the Prodigy knife. The sheath for this knife is durable in the extreme. Not really a quick access with the 2 straps, but it won't come out of the sheath without an intentional effort to get it out. Very well made and keeps it's edge well. I keep one knife on my SHTF bag and a second in my bigger B.O.B. I highly recommend it. I've skinned large animals with it as well as used it for general purposes when in the bush. I've never regretted owning any Gerber I've ever bought.
I have the black prodigy and this Tan one and I never understood why so many dislike serrations. I personally never have any problems with them while using the straight,edge and they can be very handy for,cutting. I love it and the sheath is even better then I expected. I just wish the handle part of,the sheath just had one strap and not 2
I would buy this in heartbeat if it had a plain edge.

AWESOME, knife. I dont mind the serations but would have bought two if it were not serated. The case is tough. the blade length is perfect for my uses. I also love the grip , doesn't tear my hands up like my seal pup. fits my hand better than the lmfII. My friend recommended this knife to me ,after his second military deployment.
NO FLIPPING SERRATIONS!!! Love your products but listen to the vast majority of opinion. Please pick 5 comments and you will see what we want. Please listen and have a plain blade regardless of what your lead blade designer says.
Love the size, shape, and weight of this knife. Steels holds an edge well. Please Gerber, listen to your customers. Make this knife without serrations!!

Agree, at least an option of no serrations, and you'd have a winner.
This would be my ideal knife were it not for the serrations. I currently have the drop point version and love the size and feel but hesitate to carry it into the woods for bushcrafting because the serrated area doesn't cut like a plain edge. If you made a plain edge version of the prodigy I would buy many and treat them all like rented mules.
I personally don't own this knife but I will say,Gerber,for the love of god just make a plain edge prodigy...PLEASE!
would also LOVE to see a sharpener in the sheath as well. I like serrations but they do take up a lot of the blade. such a awesome knife, just needs some minor adjustments and it will be perfect.

Absolutely love this blade. Tough all-purpose blade that retains its edge very well. A must have.
I'd give this knife 5 stars if it didn't have serrations. It's difficult to make a fuzz stick or shavings for fire without a fine edge. The rest of the knife is perfect for just about anything else--the size, shape, 420HC blade and weight are perfect. So come on Gerber, give us the option. And please hurry, I'm not getting any younger.

This is my current favorite model of the various "combat" knives Gerber offers. My favorite would be a plain edge version. Please, we need a plain edge model, I already have the serrated but would buy another if plain edge!!!
Have the prodigy tanto, love it, want a prodigy drop point (matched set) but love the coyote brown color more than the black, but don't have credentials. the sheath broke on my tanto, so i guess i should look into that first. I was iffy on the serrations on my tanto, bought it anyways, thought can't go wrong, made in the USA, turns out the serrations make the knife. options are always good though (color, serrations)

The knife is amazing but needs improvements spear holes and a non serrated version with the possibility to remove the grip.
Needs to have more color options for the color on the handle. I love the way this knife looks but will never buy one becuase that brown is hideous. Black would be a great choice. Lime green would be awesome for those into the whole zombie craze.
I agree that there should be options to have smooth or serrated edge, more color options. If not make it so the serrations don't take up half of the blade. Also in corporates a sharpener in the sheath and spear holes through the handle
I agree with the others there NEEDS to be a non serrated edge version on many knifes you have such as the prodigy and most definitely the LMF 2. Please take our ideas into consideration and think of how many more people would buy it. Thanks

Keep the serrations. Serrations helps with the functions of the knife. However, to satisfy the traditional style of knife collectors who like a smooth edge, make another Podigy in addition to the original.
leave the serrations and make it with a knife shaper like the lmf 2 sheath
Is this a full tang all the way to the pommel? If not, please make it so, and agreed with po1 no serrations! I hope you have the same sheath/sharpener system as the lmf ii... if so this is going to be a winner!
