MEET GERBER
Compact enough to fit on your keychain or in your pocket yet reliably versatile with 10 tools, this pint-sized multi-tool doesn't skimp when its backed by Bear. The only compact multi-tool with 2 full size blades, you will never be unprepared with this in tow.
Details:
The only compact multi-tool with two full size blades on it. The Compact Multi-tool is small enough for a keychain or pocket, yet packs a big punch when you need it most.
I had mixed feelings with this tool. The blade and the mini-saw can be easily opened, however, the mini-screws and the minitweezer are VERY hard to open, as I have thin nails, I do not want to use these tools for the sake of keeping my nails intact. I tried to loosen them with a Torx screwdriver, however, the screws are literally morseling away. What a shame, the concept itself is good, the design also, but very poor materials to begin with and I cannot understand how the above referenced problem was not addressed - it is a problem for several users.
Not very well designed. It looks good but when it comes to using the screw drivers or bottle opener on the serrated side you will rip off a finger nail trying to open them. Very poor product for Gerber and Bear Grylls.
I always wanted a small, key-chain like tool, that would give me a basic functionality - and for this the product was ok.
But after very simple work with pliers, they just snapped like in a month after purchase.
I've got that multitool since today - the rest of it works fine, but I've have had to tape it with some carbon-foil and pilers not work...
Im looking for a new one compact multitool and I doubt if it's gonna be Gerber....
Same story as all the other reviews... might as well buy another product. Pliers broke easily... not worth the name the money or the rep
Disappointed by the quality of this product. Judging by the reviews here there is a design fault as the pliers also broke on me while I was fixing a zipper. The product should be recalled and replaced or refunds should be given.
The pliers part of the multi-tool bent while repairing a lanyard. It was pretty light work for this tool to bend and now the pliers will not work now. You have to laugh a little when a plastic clip was tougher then my multi-tool.
The worst part is that I tried to fill out a warranty clam, but the site froze on me twice. I understand that products can break, but when a company states they have a warranty but the site wont let you submit a claim it raises the question does Gerber stand behind their products. From the comments below I am not sure that is true.
I am an extremely loyal customer, and if the brands I buy products from don't stand behind me then they will never earn my business in the future.
Pliers broke (spring on one side) and wont shut when trying to cut a thin copper wire.. not worth sending back and wasting more money. Wish I had saw these reviews before purchase. Expected better quality from Gerber!!
They should be ashamed to sell this.
Pliers worked great for bending a paper clip into the specific shape I needed it in. However, when I tried it on something that needed a little more torque the locking mech broke and pliers are no longer useable nor does it close completely anymore. I'm hoping the warranty replaces it and I won't use it for anything too strenuous.
Don't waste your money. Used the pliers for the first time to fix a zipper on my backpack and the spring broke. Yes that's right they broke on a zipper. Should of bought a different brand.
Nice and compact. It fits well in your pocket. I used the pliers to crimp a metal fastener back into place, it broke the the spring on one side.
First use of this tool on some electrical wires and the lock spring just broke when I applied a slight pressure on the handle. Don't waste your $20 on this one.
Is a very nice and well thought out tool. Have used mine quite a lot. This is hard to explain unless you can hold one of these tools. I was using the pliers on a nut and on one side, the back side of the tool; the locking mechanism where the pliers lock open, bent back rendering the one side of the pliers useless. It did not take very much pressure as you really can't get much torque because of the small size.
All in all, it is a good product and has served me well. I guess I will see how good their warranty service is.
Pliers locking spring got folded in the middle and broke off the next time I tried to open pliers. Very disappointing.
This tool is too fragile that can not be used for normal activities such as occasionally cutting small pieces of wood or cable or clothing. the jaw tool just broke after trying to cut a thin wire
I have this unit which I received as a gift.
The pliers broke at the hinge the first time using the tool.
I am planning to send back under warranty.
Very handy to keep in your pocket perfect size. Until the pliers broke a week later. I don't fill I was over working it. Just weak
can fit in pocket, good tools, good for self defense(if you have smalerhands)
and if you wont to buy your son mult itool knife(if you think is a safe for him) then buy it
Useful features, Great size. BUT, tried to loosen a car battery bolt and the pliers snapped with very little pressure. We'll see how the life time warranty works, OR is the cost to send it back more than another (better) tool?
I've had mine for over a year. It works great, however I broke off the support for the knife blade. Would love to get it fixed. It is as I said an awesome tool.
in "knife mode" the handle is very short and thick, difficult to use. and I have small hands. for someone with big hand must feel like a toothpick...
Tried to cut some plastic and then bent the blade backwards.
Until this, was I very happy with my Multi-tool
Difficult to get blades and other tools out. Tried to use pliers on a nut and unit snapped like a twig. hardly useful. Best thing about it, the survival tips.
Not the best multi tool around obviously, but I keep mine on my car keys for smaller unexpected problems and it has saved me too many times in that way to count.
I tell all my friends to pick one up and keep it handy!
Really this tool is for its size an excellent tool to bring any activity can be stored anywhere on your clothes and know that you can count on it at any time throughout is something with the greatest tools you can not do since may damage in attire one wears that are more noticeable to the eye. I carry it with me everywhere and always meet me. I have added to the ring this tool a mini flashlight led an inch long I did a mini keychain with paracord and added the key paracord a mini fire starter bracelet and so I made my own mini kit and goes with me forever without being visible to the human eye. It really estou very comfortable with this tool I recommend it to shut eye.
The pliers on this tool can't even handle a light task?! Question for Gerber: What are the expectations for use of the pliers?
Great little tool, but unfortunately the needle nose pliers didn't last long. somehow the detention/spring on the back (locking it in place) bent and broke. this being one of it's main features now makes it pretty much useless. I did notice the torx screws, so it can be taken apart... any chance to just get the replacement bit?
Hi, the Gerber is such a great tool, but in fortunately i have a problem with one thing about the multi tool and that is the pocket i Have had mine for over a year now and i used it every day , but then the Gerber pocket tore, went to almost every shop and could not find a new one , dont know where to look anymore !
Thank you
John
Needle nose pliers broke with first use ! the locking pawl was bent , tried to straighten the thin finger on the pawl but broke off.
I have brought better tools for half the price. I had one replacement already and it broke the first time I used it as well. I really want my money back on this loser. Or at least something that will last for more than one day
I had good luck with the screwdrivers but when it came to the pliers, not so much. I expected more from Gerber but then again, I paid under $20 bucks....
This tool appears to be very similar to the Mini Suspension, sold at Home Depot for considerably less money, but with a differently shaped knife blade, and a nail file instead of a second knife blade.
I got it to pull up puncture vine around the neighborhood, and for that it works well. The thin jaws of the pliers penetrate soil easily, and the teeth on the jaws give a firm grip. However, since the handles are so short and they touch each other close to the joint when closed, it is very easy to pinch either your thumb or the base of your forefinger when you use the pliers. I might try grinding away some of the handle scales with a Dremel tool to see if that helps. Also, it is easy to pinch your hands when closing the thing up, because it snaps closed with a fair amount of force.
The knife is fine (sharp but not evenly honed), but the other tools are barely better than nothing, which is probably all you can expect at this size.
I've carried the compact Bear Grylls for over a year now and consider it the best compact multi-tool among many that I've owned. It is small enough that I carry it every day, from day hikes to office work, to the little stuff that pops up along the way. I like the workmanship and the selection of tools for a compact style. The straight and serrated blade designs have done the job of blades twice the size. It is not a heavy-duty tool: get a bigger one for that. Improvements? The tweezers are clumsy and stiff. Nice!
I wish I had read the reviews on here before purchasing this. The blades are very difficult to remove from the multi tool and upon it's first use something for the pliers snapped on the inside and is now unusable. I am surprised Bear Grylls would put his name on such a flimsy tool and I don't think I will be buying anything else from Gerber. Disappointing.
My blade bent backwards the first time i tried to whittle with it. The pliers snapped while i was using it to bend a almost paperclip thin S hook closed. Very disappointed
I have used this as a small tasks too medium tasks EDC because I found the bear grylls ultimate multi-tool too heavy for me. I love this multi-tool and recommend it to anyone who wants a compact multi-tool for an EDC. I use the tools alot and love them. The blades are both nice and the tools are great. I love it!!!
I bought 15 days ago and already broke down. The quality of this small multi tool is very questionable. It seems that the only good as a keychain.
I carry this knife for the main purpose of removing hooks from fishes mouth. Its the perfect tool for it. But have had problems with the retaining spring bending. First time I took it back to the store and got a new one. My second one did the same thing. If it had a better retaining spring it would be great.
Same as many others, pliers broke.....i was really shocked since i heard gerber product are of good quality
Great little tool...at first. Two weeks after I got it, the plier spring completely broke. Everything else is great, but the pliers aren't reliable.
Pliers retaining spring broke when attempting to repair an air line in the dash of my freightliner. I had a $5 chinese needlenose in the sidebox so I didn't have to pay $500 to get towed for a 5 minute fix with a 60 cent part.
Pliers also broke after a couple of months...very light use. Contacted the warranty department. I hope that they can fix/ replace the tool.
Same as several other reviews - the retaining plate for pliers broke on the first week and on fairly light to moderate pressure I might add. Very disappointed.
quite deception 2-3 use and the sping of one side of the plier is broke... and i see i am not the only one on rewies..
Spare parts available more robust i expected.???
Not very durable tried to remove 7/16 nut (not frozen or rusted) and the pliers snapped like a toothpick would not recommend!!
Dear Sirs,
I must admit that I am very disappointed with the quality of Gerber Bear Grylls Compact multitool. I own it until about a month ago, I bought it new in order to wear it everyday in my EDC kit. Just today I was a need to use it and using pliers very embarrassed I was surprised because there was a twist stop and later cracks. As a professor of mechanical engineering at the high school, I know very well what kind of load this tool can and must endure. I think the quality can not compare with manufacturers like Victorinox and Wenger. :-(
The small Bear Gryll is very useful, and very small, which is pretty good by itself. I use it on every day event, even before the need is in need. Pretty good so far. regards
I got this multi-tool for my birthday. On first use, the pliers just broke like some cheap chinese copy...
brought it about a week ago , the tools are extremely good and the fine edge was shipped razor sharp , the tools also feel real sturdy and packs in a real compact size , get it
I have had the multi-tool Gerber Bear Grylls for about five months. Yesterday I noticed that all of the rubber handle pieces are coming loose. They are just not attached in a way that will last very long. I am going to return it on Monday.
This thing is a toy. I collect multi-tools and this is pretty much for looks. Since I purchased it retail for next to nothing, there cannot be enough margin for the use of top flight materials. The old saying "you get what you pay for" holds true in this case too.
This little multitool is great for carrying in your pocket if you don't want to use a belt sheath. However, after using the pliers several times for light work, the retaining spring broke. the blades on the outside are still useful, but one side of the pliers won't open.
I guess it's back to my Leatherman Juice
I get this tool a few weeks ago, it is great for outdoor and military purposes.
It can stand salt water very good, and doesn’t even get stack when sea sand get in to it.
It is a great little tough tool for every day in harsh environment.
Dear,
I bought Bear Grylls Gerber Compact multitool yesterday. I've used it today to open beer bottle, and guess what; Bottle opener broke. Shame on you Gerber and Bear Grylls. I have also noticed that multitool's body has manufacturing fault (trust me I'm an engineer). Also, knife was not sharpened at all, I had to sharpen it by myself.
You can not be compared with my Victorinox pocket knives or tools.
Best of luck!
Dimitrije from Croatia
Same here...pliers broke the first time I used them....and my expectations are reasonable!
This is my first Gerber :(
Back to Leatherman!
Same as the others. Pliers broke first time using. Love the multi-tool but don't carry with the broken pliers
Mine was the same as the others. The pliers broke the first time I tried to put some decent pressure on them.
First day... went to use them to loosen a bolt on my dog nail clippers and the lock back to the pliers gave way and rendered the pliers useless. Returned them for a Leatherman Wingman.
I will say the Gerber multi tool I have from the Military is far superior and held up to the abuse I gave it every day all day and they are still going strong.. I just wanted something a little smaller for day hikes.
I love this multitool tool but the pliers keep breaking. I see I'm not the only one with this problem. Why haven't you issued a massive re-call on this. Have you done anything at all?
Used this little tool for very basic work in job, screwdrivers were solid and the perfect sizes, knives ok, but the pliers broke very quickly!! Anyone with hand strength will snap the cheaply cast support member, rendering the whole tool junk (wont stay closed now). Going to try and warranty, maybe they will give me something with a better design!
its is won of the worst knifes ever it broke a soon as i used the plies it also the blade get stuck super easy don't wast your money
Overall, just a poor design of the pliers. Everything else is great. But the design of the pliers is failing and drags the entire tool down. I wanted this tool because of the pliers as I have a need for them, but they broke the first time I tried to hold anything substantial with them. Simply a bad design and not worth the money.
I like the small size.
However, the serrated blade is loose (out of the package). While I have many sizes of the torx bits, they are too small to tighten it.
Why not use a more common Philips head (i.e. Jeweler's screwdriver).
The wire cutters do not work at all, but everything else works very well. Before you use the pliers and break them like so many disappointed individuals here, take a moment to recognize how very small they are. It would be unwise for anyone to use such small pliers, no matter who made them, on anything too heavy. I had to regrind the edge on the fine blade but it now holds a supreme edge that wont go away. I keep this piece as a key chain along with the BG micro torch for every day carry. I honestly have stopped carrying a pocket knife because the blades on this multi-tool serve my needs so well. Where this piece has its fault are acceptable, at least to me. I highly recommend that when you by any piece of equipment you keep reasonable expectations.
I had this for less than two weeks and a support brace for the pliers broke while cutting a piece of wire....My first and probably last Gerber purchase.
I use these all the times for small jobs and have never had a problem, perhaps the previous reviewers had defective models or defective users. Either way I have used these for all my small jobs for over a year now and never once had a problem. All around awesome pliers.
Broke the first time i used the pliers. All I treied to do was unscrew my antena from my jeep. I know it's not heavy duty but just my antena? VERY dissapointed
I got this for Christmas and after 4 months of light use the pliers ends will no longer close full. This is due to rounding the edge of the tension beam causing the handle to interfear with the operation. I'm currently have an e-mail into the company about it and will update this review once I get something from them.
Pliers are an ornamental only, do not attempt to use them as they will fail and then not fold back into the handle.
I have two of these tools. I love the size but they are weak. I carried the first pair for about 2 weeks before the pliers broke during a one handed squeeze. No problem, I thought, I have a second pair in my drawer. The first time I opened them they hung up and won't close completely. I will return both, but probably buy a Leatherman squirt to keep in my pocket.
gto these as a christmas gift from teh kids, blades were pretty nice, screwdriver blade has withstood more torque then was probably meant for it. but this tool had fallen prey to the many others, locking tabs for the pliers bent and broke off while trying to remove a small size zip tie. very disappointed, this was my favorite smaller multitool.
I barely used these things and they broke. Barely put a load on the pliers working with basic thin picture frame hanger wire of all things. Really Gerber, you're better than this tool.
I join the others here.. The first time I put a medium amount of load on the pliers, the support struts buckled. They are not designed well at all for purpose. I had to use them with kid gloves until (shortly afterwards) the support strut broke of completely. I was really disappointed. The Bear name sold me and I was really looking for a solid bit of kit... I even bought another as a gift (prior to mine breaking) and boasted how it was a great German brand (isn't it?). As engineers I have zero faith that it's still working..!!
I got this thing for my birthday, thanks for the thought sis. But it is a piece of crap!!!! The pliers broke the first time i used them. I was trying to pull a plastic tab when they folded. The knife is a stamped blade, flimsy. The serated blade has burr's all over it. I would rather be in the woods with nothing, rather than depend on this junk. Nice one bear, put your name to crap.
Great tool! It's really small and light weight. The tools and knifes work really great. I even managed to cut open a cocoanut. I love how you can access the tools from the outside and the tool just looks really great. I just wish it came with its sheath.
I bought this to replace my swiss army knife because of the pliers. After reading some of these reviews, I am not so sure of the quality of Gerber. Even their warranty suggests the multitools are not quite up to par. Well, I will use it until it breaks and go back to my swiss army knife, which I can seriously abuse and they never fail me. I will write another comment to follow-up in a month to let all know if this is a POS or not. (PS, I should have got the clue that it was not so good becaused it was endorsed by the master faker himself... "BG")
I have found every tool on this piece useful except the wire cutters. Every thing else has been durable and effective in my uses. I got this as a gift so I'm not complaining. I have seen this tool go for about 10 bucks in stores. for that price it's not a bad choice for light carry.
I just received this multi-tool as a gift. The construction is very tight, nothing wobbles. It is surprisingly heavy for its size. Hoping this means it will hold up better than it has for some of the disappointed owners here. The knives are sharp and I like having a fine and serrated blade separately. The only thing I would have liked to see added would have been a can opener, but this is a compact tool. I've seen this tool go for as little as ten dollars, for that price I'd call it a steal.
This is a good little tool if used as intended. It is my key chain EDC tool and I like it a lot. Only two things I can say against it. It is a bit heavy for its size, and the blade shape is not my favorite. I use this tool nearly every day and it never lets me down.
THis multitool isn't really that good. The wire cutters are weak, the pliers are weak, and the blades dull easily. If you want a heavy duty pocket multitool that will actually work, buy a Leatherman.
I don't know what the other people are talking about its a really good tool for a very good price and ive used the pliers for a while now and it works perfectly
i broke it trying to cut some aluminum. Whichm would basically be a soda-pop can "tab" just thicker? If they were not hollowed out.
Very disappointed GERBER! I used to like your products untill now. Using this multi-tool for fishing. Use the pliers and the locking mechanism broke. I can't believe bear put his name on this crap. Soo much for quality. Plus u can toss survival out the window. How can u trust this to use in a survival situation if the damn thing breaks with the first use. Just bought it today. Then a few hours later it breaks. Why the cheap metal? Was this even tested for survival situations?
First time I used the pliers (to secure a small fishing weight) a piece broke rendering the pliers useless.
Like the other reviewer I used the pliers on something, and the hold lever bent. Now the pliers don't close all the way, and won't open all the way either. Complete junk. My first, and last Gerber.
I used the wire cutters on a small fishing lure rusty wire and the pliers fell apart. Hopefully I will get the lifetime warranty honoured
Great pocket-sized tool, reassuringly weighty for it's size. Sharp knives and spring-loaded pliers.
On the downside, the phillips screwdriver is all but useless (basically a flat driver).
Pocket guide a bit gimmicky but a welcome addition still.
hi,i carry this tool in my pocket every day.the only reason i gave it 4 stars is because its 3oz its heavy for its size
Can't handle small jobs...Tried to use the pliers to hold a small nut from turning on a screw, and the hold lever bent and broke! The pliers are now completely useless as the handle spins freely and won't catch. I hope Bear made enough money from the endorsement to endure the embarrasment of backing such a cheap tool.
small lightweight used it many times never once have i had a problem every things there cheap and good i love it its the perfect tool way to go take this with on all camping hiking fishing etc but mostly surviving thank you bear grills and gerber
Good little tool for the money. It really needs a clip instead of just bouncing around in your pocket.
great buy!
pro:
1.price
2.looks
3.number of tools
4.size
5.joints are made with screws not rivets huge advantage when cleaning and oiling the multitool.
(i also have a squirt ps4 with rivets at the joints and it's like hell when i accidently get sand in the joints)
contra:
1.wire cutters are to small
2. the flat philips screwdriver does not fit smaller screws and on the screws it fits the tool has trouble getting enough torque to do the job
3.after several uses the tweezers tend to gring at the joint...at a point it stops
4.the blade hits the metal when folded.
This is an exceptional product! Small enough to carry around with me wherever I go and versatile enough to fit most situations.
1. Wire cutters- work like a dream! Just clasp and twist.
2. Serrated Knife- surprisingly sharp! I sawed through a three inch bough in a little over a minute.
3. Small Flat Driver- versatile as a puncturing tool as well.
4. Tweezers- Helpful for those pesky splinters. I get them a lot so these come in handy!
5. Needle Nose Pliers- excellent strength and grip
6.Fine Edge Knife- I actually cut myself pretty bad when first opening it. Very sharp!
7. Phillips- fits standard sized screws.
8. Medium Flat- fits standard sized screws
9. Bottle Opener- For beer on the go;)
All in all this is an awesome product that I highly recommend due to it's durability and versatility!
Way to go Bear!
This is great for small jobs, however it could not endure the abuse of me and my shipmates, the pliers bent when I was using them trying to fix a desk in my shop, but the blades kept and edge on them after much scraping and use and abuse, not ment for conditions that step outside what an everyday person would use them for, I would like to find something that is this small but is "sailor proof"
I wouldn't carry this as a primary muti tool but good to keep in your hunting/camping incase you break or lose your bigger one. The fine edge knife is can cut most things and the serreated knife can cut through a 3 inch branch in about a minute or so. All the screw drivers fit all the basic screws you would come across. The bottle opener opens bottles pretty easy. The tweezers are the only thing i wouldn't give 5 stars because they don't open up very wide and its hard to get a grip on them. The pliers work good and are easy to grip. The wire cutters can cut wire easliy but not very thick wire. Overall its a great multi-tool to have and very sturdy, strong and concealable. Great job Gerber and Bear Grylls!
this is an excellent tool cause on one of the eps of bear grylls he uses the pliers and they don't break the first time its perfect for a scout camp or just survival plus this is the one bear grylls uses most often
I'm a city-dweller who uses this tool to anchor my keys. It's a decent keychain and the components have come into use almost daily -- cutting open stubborn boxes, popping after work bews, yanking slivers, adjusting glasses and even, in one instance, to smash open a stubborn pop-tab can.
While this may not be the ultimate survival tool, it does the trick as a useful item to have on hand at any time. Let's face it, though, how many of us actually need a survival tool (pending some sort of apocolypse)?
Also, no mention of this as a fist filler? It perfectly fills my palm enough to not have it broken over someone's skull if the need so arises for me to throw down.
I got this from a well-meaning friend for my birthday. I must say that I'm surprised at the poor quality of this thing. I expect quality gear from Gerber; this disappoints.
Initially it feels solid and well made, but the centerpiece of the tool, the pliers, seem flimsy and the jaws do not line up well. I used them for a simple wire-bending job this afternoon. The poor alignment of the jaws made this simple task almost impossible. Actually cutting the wire _was_ impossible as the jaws slipped apart. Also, with the pliers deployed, the tool was surprisingly difficult to simply pick up! The angle of the handles made the tool slide out of my grip.
Also, I wonder about the tool choices in a survival tool. Straight and serrated blades, yes, of course. But three screwdrivers? Pliers? Tweezers? Bottle opener (yes, on the flat-blade screwdriver)?
Still, it would be better than nothing, I guess, if I needed a tool to actually survive.
This tool will find a place in a corner of a toolbox, but it sure won't replace my Leatherman.
I just got it, Now I'm a -EX- Scout, Leder, & EX Millatary.
I spent over 12 years.
Now i woodent wont to Survive my life off of it
for ever on it., But I wood make it (4) at leest,
2 .5- weeks with it. - you need to yous your HED! its a-
COMPACT- MULTI--tool, not a ( GUN! ) it dus
the Job , to help you stay a live ....
The compact multitool really is compact; small and light enough to carry in your pocket. although I wish it came with a pouch. One thing, though, the blade doesn't hold an edge as well as I expected. But its great nonetheless.
A great tool, except for the pliers that broke with what i thought was not too much force (one hand). Otherwise very useful.
I have had this tool for about a week and a half and it broke during an ordinary task leaving it near worthless. All of the tools on the device are great except the pliers. I used them today to squeeze a split-shot weight on my fishing line and the plier
