Details:
I have owened other multi-tool knives (Leatherman + Others) and this stands up to any of them. The Flash light in this set is great and a perfect size for a little emergency light. The fire starter works very well and since it is not mounted upside down there are little fears of it falling out.
Knife was sharp out of the package and holds an edge well. General construction of the tool is rugged and the locking mechanism is handy as it locks each part in place while being used (was a little stiff out of the box but has loosened with time).
I am very happy with this knife and would recommend it to anyone looking for a handy multi tool for camping/trails, which is what I use it for - it pairs well with other knives I have.
The Best knife I have ever used in my life. It cuts almost anything. The Fire starter works great. (A little palm tree fuzz and its a one hit flame.) The only thing that happened to my knife is at the top of the sheath were the knife goes in it tore. (well got cut) So now the knife falls out whenever turned upside down. One day i sharpened the knife to the point were when I put it back in its sheath it cut the rubber sides and dislocated the screw holing it in place. Still I give a 6 out of 5 star. I guess the knife got to sharp for the sheath to handle!
I lost my flint because it got a little loose I looked down to see if it was there then it was gone.
I too lost the flint to my knife, and cant find a replacement flint for that knife anywhere. Seems gerber should replace it. The flint on the knife is poorly placed. Like "otdoorsmen" said , its upside down and mine fell out. Its a feature of the knife that should be fixed. im sure we're not the only ones that have lost that flint.
Used my BG fixed knife and the included ferrocerium tool to start a fire on the top of a 4700ft mountain when it was snowing and wind blowing hard. I scraped off the wet bark and made kindling, and then sparked a vaseline cotton ball. Fire. It worked well, only 2 strikes in the wet wind. I just came to the site to buy some backups. I do recommend it.
I used this starter and a Gerber knife to teach my boy how to make a no-match fire. Successful on the first attempt. I was surprised, but of course acted like I knew I was going to be successful. Now I am the superhero of survival in my son's eyes.
this flint worked well for me and the best part is that it fits perfectly in the LMF II sheath where the sharpener is located, used the top velcro strap to secure it.
failed to actually ignite a moderately dry pine needle bed. I had a flame for an instant. I would stick to the old coghlans flint and magnesium fire starter. I thought I could ditch the old fire starter but I actually broke the Gerber BR survival fire starter. I lost faith in this product after failing to start a fire and I broke my the ferrocium into two useless stumps. Lucky I was just testing my equipment before ever needing it. I think the company should re-evaluate this product, I was disappointed. Knife itself is all around good.
