DESIGN INTENT

The one thing that never changes about life on the river is that it is in fact, always changing. The specific demands of those who live, work, or play on the river influenced Gerber to design a knife unlike anything before it. If ever a knife was made for a specific purpose, the River Shorty may just be it.

Whether rafting, paddling, canoeing, or diving, one thing remains true – if a knife is going to hold up in the water the design can’t be an afterthought. The highly polished stainless steel blade makes the River Shorty extremely corrosion resistant, meaning you can throw it in your raft and forget about it until you need it. The purposely blunted tip won’t puncture inflatables or fingertips, and the lightweight handle has built in grooves along the edge for grab-and-go situations. This knife goes anywhere the water can take you with a sheath designed specifically to mount on a PFD.

I carried this blade on my PFD for a multi-month kayaking trip in the Caribbean. It gave me peace of mind to have it fixed to my person, thought the clip on the sheath snapped, I was able to melt a zip tie and wrap it around my shoulder strap. I liked the click feature on the sheath, so I knew when it was in place.
I had to cut line a couple times with this blade and appreciated that the handle has a secure grip.
All around, an important safety tool for any sort of water based expedition.

Yeah I get a bit of razzing about my blade up PFD mounted Gerber River Shorty knife. It was a gift from the kids and I love it. I like the adjustable clicks. I mount blade up, so I am cognizant the knife is there. If I had reason to be underwater and into crap, I might mount blade down. I love my gift and proudly wear it. Very Nice knife. I was a scuba diver before this, and am accustomed to carrying a knife. I would buy it again.

Great little knife for the shoulder strap of your pack. Easily accessible and light to use. I've had mine about 2 years now. Great little critter to have around doing any type of tasks

Great little knife! Knife and sheath both extremely light in weight. Clips solidly to my vest. Blunted tip is a nice touch. Good grip and ergonomics in genaral.

I notice they don't mention the weight of the sheath this knife comes with. IDK about this new version (if it is actually different than previous models) but the version from the last few years had a sheath that weighed about three times as much as the knife, negating any weight savings.

I've had the original of this for maybe 18+ years. Pretty decent knife for what it is. It's not full tang, at least my old one isn't. A magnet sticks to it right to around that first smaller hole in the handle where that finger stop bump thing is on the new one(mine doesn't have that). If I go into the woods I'll take my Tops but this thing is a good around the house or water knife for low to medium abuse tasks for sure, which is all they claim it is.
