This knife is a multi-functional addition to your toolbox. A sturdy drop point blade is deployed by dual thumbstuds for one-hand opening, a plunge lock keeps the blade safely in use or storage. Also includes cross and flat head drivers, a file, and a bottle opener.
It's a knife first, with multi-functional implements second. The Obsidian features a high-grade blade with dual thumb studs for one-handed opening and a safety-style lock that ensures the blade stays open or closed when you need it to. Additional implements include philips and flathead screw drivers, and a bottle opener.
I've carried the Obsidian every day for about a decade. Not only do I carry it, but I use it a dozen times a day. The blade holds an edge better than you'd expect for $40. The positive lock has saved me more than the purchase price in Band-Aids alone, and the drivers and opener have saved me countless trips out to the truck. There aren't many tools I recommend, but I absolutely recommend this handy knife.
A couple tips:
-Drop some super glue on the belt clip screw holes, as others have mentioned.
-The bottle opener opens paint cans with a simple twist.
I don't know how long I carried this knife but I think it was for about ten years. During that time it went everywhere with me and travelled extensively in Africa and Australia. By far it was the most useful bit of kit I've ever carried and was used as a multi-tool in home repair jobs, fishing tours, camping and a plethora of other everyday tasks too numerous to mention. My criticism would be the belt clip which came lose until I dropped some super glue into each screw recess, and it would be great if the screw driver locked! I Was able to keep a shaving edge on the blade its entire life. Sadly it was dropped while launching a boat in thick weed on the Zambezi escarpment in Zimbabwe. Time to order another one for the next ten years!
My everyday carry knife. Great blade, just the right size for my use an excellent knife.
The reason for the 4 stars.
It needs a lock on the two tools. They will fold closed on you if you aren't careful. Maybe they were designed without a lock so you could possibly use them at an angle or something. I don't know but I would rather have them lock open to avoid accidental closing.
Had this knife for a few years and it still works great. Just 2 things, the belt clips is gone put it in a sheath and put a lock on the tools. Those parts are note why I bought the knife. The knife is awesome.
Solid, sturdy, handy, AMAZING knife. I've been using it for 6 years now and it has never let me down
This is the best folder I've ever owned, and goes with me virtually everywhere. Holds its edge well, the thumb-safety is reliable, it makes a good fist weight, and the screwdrivers, file, and bottle opener are really handy. (Seriously though, Gerber, you need to add locking on the utility parts.)
I received this knife as a gift for Christmas and immediately fell in love with it. Came in very handy for my daily use. Only issue I had with it is that the utility's on the knife did not lock.
great knife all around, only issue is that sometimes the flat head gets pushed in too far and chips or jams the blade
This is my everyday work knife. It's solid and a little on the heavy side but that works out in case it's dropped unknowingly. The blade is solid and sharpens well. The only down side is the screwdriver accessories don't lock a little to much pressure and you got a knuckle banger.
This knife has worked great for the last year that I've had it. Like any knife, it needs to get honed from time to time but I like to be prepared so that's not a problem. The attachments are nice to have but the knife will stand on its own. Thanks for a solid product, gerber.
This knife is all around great. I accidentally broke it, and within 2 weeks if sending it back, I had another new one, free of charge. This is a great starter knife.
needs to be assisted
tactical tanto and a blade made of D-2 tool steel and the serrations should be ground in at a 45 degree angle
First Impression: nice sturdy all purpose knife, then had some small suggsetions(not really complaints) The knifes 440 steel dulls to quickly, making this unfit in my opinion for backpacking and utility work as in these two tasks sharpening is kinda a pain. I'm not being hypothetical, I've used this knife for both (constructing a theater set) and 1 week in the Great Smokies, and didn't have a sharpner on hand. Unprepared yes, but for one week, it should of yeld. So overall nice knife. Its handle feels nice, good heft, kind of sexy, and the end use is E.D.C back up, becuase of the tools on the knife. The bottle opener's as nice as one on a SAK and the flat head is good. The phillips is just wrong. Overall, good if keep a sharpner on you, and just adding, why would anyone buy the fine? afetr two days the serrations are the only aprt that work? cough up five bucks and get serrations. Even better buy a knife not made of 440 steel.
I'm so sure this is a fine knife that I am suggesting turning it into another model based on this knife.
I would like to see this turned into a camping, survival, Boy Scout knife. All that is needed is to replace the existing tools with a locking awl with a thread loop like on the SAKs, and a can opener instead of a bottle opener. A lot of people, including Boy Scouts, use the awl for leatherwork, or repairing camping or other equipment. I'll be the first to buy one as soon as it is made.
What do you think? Please let me know.
This is honestly the best knife I've ever carried in my pocket... The multi-tools made it invaluable to have (less bulky than say a pliers-style multi-tool), and the lock holds up to some INSANE weights.... Easy to operate and open, even without having a spring assist. Never had to sharpen it, and cut anything and everything I put it to! I lost mine some time ago, and am relieved to see they still make them! I hope Gerber makes these for years, because I will always come back for more.
This knife is great for backpacking. It is slim and i like the tools on the back they are very useful semi multi tool. I back pack about 4-5 times a week through out the year and it has yet to fail me.
This is a great folding knife. I'm not too keen on serrated edged knives because of the difficulties I have in sharpening a serrated edge, but I do like this one as a secondary knife. I actually purchased this knife to use on my boat and a serrated edge is better for cutting line than a fine edge. The clip is nice, but if I were to carry it camping I would want a pouch for it as the knife is too large for clipping on a boot.
I agree with other reviewers that the two screwdriver blades are somewhat lacking. The Phillips blade is too small to be useful as an actual screwdriver - I was actually using the Phillips blade as a marlin spike (until I found an actual mariners knife that has a real marlin spike, and now use that knife on my boat as my primary knife).
I bought this knife for the sole reason that the blade could lock. I have a 3 yr old at home who is always getting in to things The blade is one of the easiest that I've had to maintain and holds a very keen edge without too much upkeep.I've had this knife for about 3 years. As for drawbacks I have to agree with the other posters. The implements need work.
had this knife for about 3-4 years now. great knife, a little difficult to maintain an edge on the blade, but I've use it for means other than intended. only issue i have had is the tip broke off and now it appears to have a Tonto tip... that's what you get when using a knife as a shovel to collect floral specimens
I've had it about a year. Feels like a heavy duty knife, and is that. Blade is good, and clip is tight and heavy duty, so it doesn't slip away. Two major flaws: Phillips head screwdriver fits about 1 in ten screws (it's tiny and shallow) and the flathead driver/bottle opener folds abruptly, which has caused more than one blood blister and finger nail puncture. Still, I use it daily.
I just got this knife and I am really liking it. It is very well made and super sharp. It is the sharpest knife I have received from Gerber. Very sturdy knife and with the screwdrivers it will be very useful.
I love this knife for my scouts, the only thing I would change is to add locks for the screwdriver bits. As a scout leader knife safety is important, and having a knife that LOCKS shut is WAY COOL.
Ps, I have been a Gerber Knife user for a lot of years, through 20 years of Naval service.
Keep up the great work.
Ive had this knife 3 years and it's great. My only complaint is hat the edge does not stay very sharp and is not the easiest to sharpen up. Otherwise it's great. I've dropped and smashed this thing so many times it's not funny. I've ran it over with the snowmobile twice, a go cart once and used it for many a use that it was never intended for. It amazing.
I have had this knife a couple of months an have put it threw some hard work and has yet to let me down
Pretty handy knife. Use it as everyday carry. Never realized how often one finds himself needing a screwdriver. I've had mine for four years now and it has not failed me yet.
