We all have a favorite tool that we reach for over and over. One that’s worn from use and shows its age with pride. It got that way for a reason: It performs well, every time it’s needed. The Outrigger is that tool.

A reliable daily carry knife needs to do more than cut well. It has to be pickup truck tough but not monster truck heavy, open fast and easily, and sit solidly in your hand. The blade should make quick work of slicing anything from stubborn knots to lunch, but not be so long or so short that it’s awkward or out of balance. That’s where the Outrigger XL comes in. The extended blade adds length for more cutting surface, and a larger profile fits bigger hands.

A Handful Of Just Right
The Outrigger XL blends elements of three of Gerber’s most popular clip folders from the past decade into 2.5 ounces of multi-faceted, problem-solving design. The Assisted Opening 2.0 technology—popularized with the Gerber Instant—uses a ball-bearing pivot for buttery smooth, one-handed opening. For added safety, the thumb Plunge Lock on the handle offers easy release when closing, keeping your fingers from the blade’s path. The open frame design strips weight out, while adding texture to the body for increased hold. Grippy without feeling sticky, the Outrigger is finished with the same molded, rubberized handle coating that debuted on the AR 3.0, keeping the knife right where it’s supposed to be—your hand.

Long Is Strong
Cut. Strip. Slice. Where others see challenges, the Outrigger XL’s partially-serrated drop point 3.38-inch blade delivers solutions. Making quick work of daily tasks, the fine edge section offers clean, accurate cuts while the serrated portion smoothly dispatches rope, twine or an aluminum can, even after hours of use. The Assisted Opening 2.0 mechanism opens quickly and easily, with one hand or two, thanks to dual thumb studs atop the blade. When it’s time to close up, just push the Plunge Lock for a positive release and smooth two-handed closure.

Hey guys. Life long Gerber fan. I have at least a hundred Gerber knives and tools if I have one. I really like Jr the features and over all design of the Outrigger Knife. So light you don’t know it’s there and razor sharp. If I had a complaint on it the AO was very tight and It was a tad small. I’m 7’ tall and as you might imagine my hands are very large. I wrote off the difficulty in using the AO feature of the Outrigger as my finger was too large to get a good push on the smallish thumb stud. When I saw the XL Outrigger I didnt even contemplate it, I just ordered it. Perfect size! However, I cannot open the AO blade on this larger version either. I have to use two hands and even that isn’t easy. It isn’t an issue of strength. I bench over 500 lbs. If you’re looking for a knife to deploy with one hand this isn’t the knife for you. I really wished this was available in just a plain folder or Automatic. This Assisted Opening Version needs a little more work fellas. -PC

  • |BY: , Good for the price

I picked this up today at my local cabelas after my swagger broke, and after doing some research for a new edc pocket knife I settled on the Outrigger XL. So far so good, comes sharp enough out of the box to make a good feather stick, but I still took a fine stone to it. The assisted opening is pretty tight at first where it sort of hurts to open with the thumb stud, but that was fixed with some screw loosening. All in all great knife, great for the price and am definitely going to keep it on me.

Razor sharp blade. Very small tolerances in the design. Light. Easy handling helped by the rubber grips. Locks securely in place when opened. Problem is... it's very difficult to open using the "assisted open" thumb stud and impossible to open without serious pain in the thumb. I've resorted to opening it with two hands, and even that is difficult since the distal two thirds of the blade is hidden in the handle when closed.

Great knife, nice and sharp right out of the box. The quality of this knife is why I chose and continue to choose gerber knives.

I was looking for a large pocket knife that was spring assisted and still light weight. This knife exceeded expectations

I got this knife as a edc. the only problem I had with it was the weight to light for my liking but with in my first day of owning it the blade rusted and I brought it right back. never had this issue with Gerber before and was kind of disappointed

Best daily carrier ever! Sturdy with very good and fast opening mechanism, does need some practice. Use it for everything; from eating to working wood... Razor sharp out of the box. I love it!

I purchased the Ourigger XL thru GearGear website. I received it today and the knife will not open with thumb and the only way it was opened was by using both hands. I will try to contact Gerber and see what they recommend. I'm thinking no one checked it before shipping out. I've owned gerber knives in the past no problems. Hopefully this will be the last as I will try the Propel Auto.

  • |BY: , Great knife, just a lil stiff out of the box

Bought this knife not to long ago and I have to say, it has impressed me a lot. My only "problem" is that it was a bit too stiff when I tried opening it with my thumb but after a few tries it got better, but only slightly, still bruising my thumb though. Overall great blade, just make sure you got a band aid or wear gloves.

this knife is great despite what you might see in other reviews that they had a hard time opening it but I find that it is fast and easy to open with one hand

I've carried dozens of pocket knives over the years and the Outrigger has outperformed them all and blown my expectations away. The edge is perfect, the construction is solid and is a beautifully balances folder. Well done Gerber!

Great knife! I would recommend this to anyone. It feels great in your hand. The assist opening is awesome. I work in the Green industry and this knife is great for cutting weed barrier, weed eater string etc.
