Assisted Opening Knife

Item: # 22-47161

As Gerber's first assisted opening knife produced, this knife inspired innovation and helped to define a brand. The lightning-quick opening mechanism is still employed today, yet the classic, functional design is all its own.

I ask a lot of this knife and don't give as much care in return as I should. I'm amazed how well she continues to perform and hold her edge for between sharpenings. Good feel in my hand. I take it everywhere and will get another if it's still available when this one goes. Reliable all around utility knife. Clip is tight, and the frame feels low profile for the size/power. Fits in tight jeans. Mommy like.

lol have had this knife for quite a few years (found out first year they produced them). I purchased my son and I one. My son uses his everyday cutting for various things. Mostly opening boxes and packaging (he sells computers).

I use mine everyday for everything. My wife gets upset sometimes when I use it in the kitchen to cut...whatever it is I need it for. Lol

Seriously, honest rating here....
it opens easy and the mechanism works great.
Can get a decent edge (see cons)
Strong blade (I have used it to pry and what not)
Easy to sharpen (see cons)

I have to keep on the sharpening. It will hold an edge, but not for long. I do use this knife for everything. So...yeah. The blade is easy to sharpen. Catch 22.
Handle is a pain in the butt to clean. I wash my knife often due to the type of use it gets.
The blade has worked loose over the years. Tightened it down a bit.

Soft blade can get a great edge just doesn’t hold it that well.
Overall this is a great everyday carry. Plan on keeping a good stone or strop close. When in heavy use Give it a few strokes to help hold the edge.

I have two Gerber knives. I use the Fast Draw. The only improvement I could recommend is an upgrade in steel for the blade. But that may boost it into a more expensive bracket.

Over the last 4-5 years I have bought and given this knife to over 15 people as gifts, my entire family carries one to include my college granddaughter. I have not heard any complaints, although one of the purchases malfunctioned I sent it back to Gerber with an explanation of what happened. I sent the knife back to Gerber they sent me a new one with no question or problem. Good product for the price, has served my friends and family well.

My trusty friend... Excellent knife that spent it's whole life in my back pocket at work. Lost it in the Tubbs Fire this week when I left it behind at the fire station that was destroyed in the firestorm. Found it today after I dug it out of the ashes. All that remains are the metal parts, knife is still intact after all of that(I'd attached a photo if I could). Will definitely replace it with another. RIP

I carried this knife for about 6 months had to disassemble and reattach the spring several times so the blade would not flop loosely posing a safety hazard. Then after working out those bugs the clip broke (I carried it on my belt at 4 o'clock). I emailed Gerber for a replacement clip and after several months haven't heard back. I carry a Buck Bantam now its half the price and made in the USA. $44 of disappointment.

This is by far my favorite gerber knife of my knife collection. Mine has the coated blade. Lightning fast deployment always sharp. Love the way it feels in the hand. Every time I see a cool gerber knife I have to get it so I have quite a few. I switch out once in a while to a different one just for a change. Great job gerber. Fan for life.

After years of service i had to write a review on this knife. The picture is different, i believe i have a slightly older model... but still. This knife was the first knife i ever owned, gifted to me by my mother before a JROTC field trip in high school. That was back in 2008. It is 2016 now, and it has been in my pocket every single day since i received it. It has followed me through two deployments both to Iraq and Afghanistan where it saw heavy use in everything from cutting Hesco barriers, sandbags, wires, and god knows what else on our numerous field exercises. It is still sturdy and just requires a sharpening and tightening of the screws every now and then... going on seven years in the Army now and the spring still works as good as day one. If you take care of it this will be one of the best pocket knives you will ever own.

Here's the TRUTH: This is a fine knife with a decent edge and you will love it, until the inner spring rusts out and it won't open or close properly. It's also not as great as it used to be.

I have the original serrated blacked out version and it is the perfect size and blade shape for almost anything. I have taken it out fishing and sailing in wet/salty conditions and with washing and oiling, it has lasted and performed beautifully for about a decade. Then the captive spring rusted through. There's no real way to oil it, other than submerging the whole knife. So I took it apart, did the repairs myself and tuned it up.

Here's the thing. That old Gerber classic FAST Draw opens, cuts and performs better than the brand new silver bladed version, right out of the box!! The new "spare" I bought has a sticky, nearly jammed safety. The mechanism crunches and grinds internally as I attempt to open it, and can not be considered a one handed knife. It also has weak serrations and a dull edge. Yes- it also lacks the index finger tab to deploy the blade.

I'm taking the "new" knife back. I'll open one more at the store to see if there is any quality control left in this company. But I'm not getting my hopes up.

You people talking about "breaking the tip" of this knife astonish me. I am 47 yrs old. Born and raised on a farm until I went into the Marine Corps out of High School, and carried knives almost all my life. 24 YEARS ACTIVE DUTY, my gerber in my pocket. almost 10 years of combat, my gerber in my pocket. THE KNIFE ISN'T BREAKING THE POINT OFF, YOU ARE. You people are the same people that use a screwdriver for a chisel. You cannot blame the knife you your incorrect usage.... I've carried this knife for a long long time, had it repaired once due to wear in the plastic bushings from sand in Iraq. They fixed it under warranty, and even sent me a brand new on for free as a thank you for my service. Honestly, I don't know WHAT you could want more from a company. Thank you Gerber for the extra knife and for the quality knife in my pocket. I'm a true fan.

This knife is great and hold an edge forever. I've always carried a pocket knife with me since I was a teenager I'm 41 now and this is by far one of my favorite. That said the lock mechanism broke on mine and wouldn't lock open but Gerber took care of it. They back their product up 100%.

I love this knife! I have had it for 7 years, and abused the living hell out of it, and it's still working perfectly. I have used it as a screwdriver, punch, prybar, I've batoned limbs and split wood. Not only does it hold an edge, but for the lock and assist mechanisms to withstand my repeated abuse, is amazing. I used it for a few years, then one day my wife tricked me into buying a new knife. I got a kershaw blur, which is a fantastic blade, but the first time I tried to use it as anything other than a knife, the blade chipped. Now granted it's just a tiny knick, but I realized fast that it wasn't going to be my gerber. So while she had been carrying it second hand, I talked her into trading back.

The first time I opened this knife I was amazed by how smooth the AO worked. It's light and hides well in my pocket. I like the lock system on it as well. Once you open the knife its locked into place. Then it will lock in the closed position. I've actually bought two of these knives because I thought I'd lost it. Fortunately I just misplaced it, so now I have a spare. I've never had a problem with this knife. It does need to be sharpened once in a while. However, once sharp it holds and edge well. I've been buying Gerber knives for close to 15 years. My favorite brand when it comes to reliability, quality, and price bar none.

I received this knife as a gift Christmas of 07. Was a great knife. Used it for everything from cutting steak, sheetrock, and ever gutted a deer or two. The lock broke about a year ago, sent it back to Gerber to fix (lifetime warranty). Could not go without so went bought another one. Noticed immediately that the new one felt cheap! most diffidently not the same quality as the original one. NOT MADE IN USA!!!!! Now hoping that Gerber would fix my old one and send it back. NOT, received another cheap one as a replacement. NOW after a year of use, the lock breaks on the new one. planning to contact Gerber to see if they will credit for one MADE in USA.

This was an EDC knife for me that I was using for about 9 months. Not a bad knife. Just really didn't like the safety. Understand the need for it but don't like the design. Like the overall design of the knife. In my opinion, the knife doesn't keep an edge very well. Also there is a "grinding" feel in the action of the knife. Maybe more of a rubbing. I thought it might be just my knife so I purchased another one and it had the same problem. Not sure if that's just how it is or if it's a problem. Knife still seems to work though.

Awesome blade. Easily deployed with one hand. Takes a great edge and holds it decently well. I would have recommended this knife to a friend. Not any more, since both of the Gerber F.A.S.T draws that I've purchased both broke the same way after only about one or two hundred deployments. After the first one, I rationalized buying another because any man made tool can have a flaw, but after the second broke the same way, I concluded it must be a bad design. Once the knives broke, they would no longer deploy OR STAY CLOSED. That's the important part. After this knife breaks, the blade (which Gerber does a good job sharpening, I might add) flops about dangerously, making it difficult to transport back home. You can't just put something like that back into your pocket. I'm worried about sending the knife back to the warranty department because I'm afraid I'll just get another poorly designed F.A.S.T. draw. If they choose to send me another model, I'll probably already have it, since I've purchased almost every Gerber product there is. I don't have the Bear Grylls A.O. knife. Hint hint Gerber...

I bought this knife in '05/'06 and was greatly pleased. Had it stolen. My local dealer didn't have any so I went to e-bay and bid on 4 / and won three. One is now again an every day carry the other two are in survival/ bugout bags.
On my original knife I did have two screws come loose- but a dab of the wife's fingernail polish on each screws thread fixed that. Like any good tool or weapon the knife should be disassembled and cleaned occasionally.
All-n-all the Gerber F.A.S.T. has been the best pocket knife I have ever owned. Never get dressed without putting it in my pocket- NEVER!
Thanks GERBER +++++

I previously had a version of this knife that I bought several years ago and it was great knife, unfortunately I lost it. When I ordered this knife to replace it I was disappointed. The action on this knife is hard to open so the assist is worthless. The old knife had a tab on the back so you could open it with your finger instead of the thumb. This one just had the thumb, not as convenient and the new one won't open with the thumb. The serrated edge is also not ground well. YOU GUYS NEED TO GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER. THE NEW STUFF IS CRAP! I purchased at amazon but the knife was folded in the sealed package so I didn't know it was bad until opened it. Also the part I ordered was a 22-47161 but the knife says 1910913A

I very happy with knife, it's kept a sharp edge for over a year, not as sharp as when I first got it but sharp enough to cut to the bone. I'm not crazy about the lock breaking but it's covered and the amount of use I got out of it, I'd have to say I got my moneys worth even if it not replaced under warranty. by the way my lock lasted over a year of almost daily use and when I first got it I played with it like it was Christmas, that put some mileage on the lock for sure.
Funny thing I have been thinking about buying another for my son so he would have a good knife.
I don't know if there's been a decline in quality at Gerber but I'll update my review if I have trouble with my next one or two because I will be buying another one

I've owned this knife for many years--not sure exactly how many, but it has the old logo (2005 version, not the current version), so it is at least 5 years. I suppose it is version 1.0 of the F.A.S.T. system. I carry this knife with me every single day.

I have never experienced a problem with this knife, except one screw came lose some time this year (2014). It is one of the screws that hold the scales on.

This one has the partially-serrated blade. I hope to get one with the regular blade soon to go with it.

One thing I really like is the belt/pocket-clip being at the butt end rather than the blade end of the knife. Makes it much easier to use coming straight out of my pocket.

I've had this knife for at least a couple years. One time the assist spring broke and Gerber took care of it, but it was about a lengthy turn around. I cannot believe the negative reviews of this knife! I've had this knife on me for the past 7 months and have never ever had a single problem with it.
The blade has a tiny looseness to it, but its nothing a tightening of the screws wouldn't fix.
I got a compliment even today of how awesome a knife it is by a coworker. It has become second nature for me to reach for it whenever I need to cut through something. If I could upload a photo I could show how it still looks brand new: even though I use it every day.
This is a beautiful knife: worth the price.

Hello Gerber! I have carried this knife as my edc blade for about two months now. Today, when I moved the saftey switch to "fire" the blade didn't fly out and it couldn't lock into place. Basically, the lock, along with the spring are broken because the blade had a whole lot of up and down blade-play. When I folded the blade back into the hilt and moved the saftey switch to "lock" it locked. But when the blade is out, it does not lock into place at all, and it doesn't fly out via the FAST technology. Now, I will try to contact Gerber to get my knife fixed.

I bought this knife about 5 months ago, and I have to say that it's probably one of the best I've ever owned. spring action is strong and reliable, size is sufficient for many tasks. No downsides that come to mind! truly worth buying. Should be worth a bit more though!!!

I am NEVER buying another one of these, the one I got less than a year ago just stopped locking in place, upon pulling it apart I find less than 5 tiny dog hairs that have got in the internal parts by the lock switch and very little debris(dirt particles) but that was all it took and my knife would no longer lock in place, this is on top of the fact that like someone else on here pointed out the clip broke in the first few days of owning this knife.

I broke the clip within 6 months and the knife is less than a year old and it accumulated debris inside and stop locking in place. I am very upset by this, I have never paid more than 20$ before for a knife and all of those lasted a helluva lot longer than this piece of crap!

When my son first joined Boy Scouts i bought him this knife, 4 years later he still loves it and would never let it go. The kids in his troop always try to trade him knifes or knives for it and he has never followed up on a deal for it. The knife is still in miraculous shape, even and all the times he has dropped it, cut with it or flipped the switch to open the blade. This is the knife for any Boy Scout. The Gerber Fast Draw is the knife to get!

This blade started as an EDC blade when I was about 13 years old, and now 5 years later it is still holding on! I don't carry it very often anymore, but this Gerber Fast Draw gets a 5 star rating in my books because of its inexpensive price, quick opening mechanism, sturdy build, and again LOW price. Good job, Gerber on this one.

I bought the knife because I like the smaller knives. Came out of package sharp as ever. Was wanting another assisted opening but found this knife not to be assisted as I am used to. Still have to use two hands to get it to open. Once I get it started, the assistance goes in effect. Should not take two hands to open an assisted opening knife. Two stars only because of this issue.

Very disappointed, I received it as a christmas gift. Was okay for a week until the blade starts to wobble then the thumb stud flew off and thats an important part because thats what is used to open the knife and thats what keeps the blade from bending back , the serrations aren't very good not that i care for the serrations anyway. and it will not hold an edge.

The knife failed and the blade now flops around on the swivel. Under regular use the blade wore quite quick. I used this blade to cut fruit, cardboard, to whittle sticks, to open light packages, and just general use. It seemed like a great blade, but a complete failure on the mechanism is dangerous and completely ridiculous. When the blade failed as I was attempting to whittle a very skinny stick to roast marshmallows, it jerked from my hand and stabbed me in the thumb so deep that the tip bent on my bone. It's too bad really, because I was enjoying the knife.

Only issue I've had was I snapped the clip a couple months ago, but Gerber sent me a replacement clip no problem. Never opens accidentally, and never fails. I fell more confident doing my job knowing I have it in my pocket as a last ditch effort.

At a similar size, the AR 3.0 is pretty similar to the Fast Draw, except the AR is easier to open even without the F.A.S.T. mechanics. The blade seems to stick in the closed position, requiring quite a bit more force to open than the AR.

Style, design, and functionality when opened are great on the Draw but the sticky opening mechanism is annoying. I'll be taking it back to the store.

I purchased this model knife off the clearance aisle at the Nashville, Arkansas Wal Mart.. I had not owned a Gerber pocket knife since the original Bolt Action I purchased at a Hope, Arkansas sporting goods store back in 1983.

This by far is the best pocket quality pocket knife I have ever owned, the Bolt Action Gerber that I unfortunately lost being the next best.

I actually paid less ($21+ tax) for this model than I did the Bolt Action ($33+tax) 29 years ago.

Within a week of buying this particular knife on the clearance aisle, I noticed that they were back on the shelf in the Wal Mart sporting goods section for around $28. Wow, did I fell like I got a deal.

I just hope I never lose this one, because as I said, this is my favorite and best pocket knife I have ever owned.

I recieve this knife as a gift and was very happy at first. The blade was sturdy and it opened easily. After using this knife in water a screw an the handle slipped out. The screws holding the pocket clip in are loosening therefore making the pocket clip loose and unsturdy. I have had no troubles with the spring assembly so far but I am hoping the screw on the handle didnt strip out the threads.

Purchased this knife and had it for about a day, the clip snapped clean off and flew across the room when I tried to clip it on my belt, there must have been one tiny flaw in the steel. The mechanism does not feel to promising and sturdy. I returned it to the store and purchased a "Gerber instant" I have had it for 2 days now and some how 2 screws have fallen out of it or where never there in the first place. Not impressed at all

I've used similar knives to this one in the past with great success, this however I couldn't even open from the second I got it out of the package. Eventually I realized the issue, I'm left handed, so my index finger would always end up pushing down on the safety making it nearly impossible to open. If you're a southpaw you'll want to stay away from this one. Th knife on its own is still very good but I had to return it since it's useless for me.

  • |JUL 31, 2012
  • |BY: , Poor quality

I bought this knife 5 years ago, and since then have had to send it back 4 times to be repaired. Three of the times it was due to the spring mechanism snapping, allowing for the blade to swing freely without locking. The last time was because the clip snapped off when it caught on the inside of a door (not very durable).
I have gotten replacements every time that I have sent my blade back, but they seem to be getting cheaper in quality. The first one I bought lasted the longest, and had the finger-tip open accessory on it, but I guess that they did away with this.
Loved the weight and size of this blade. Hated having to send it back for a new one. The best lifetime garauntee is one that you never have to use.

  • |BY: , Great buy

I initially bought this for my wife, she never used it so I took over. I love assistd open knives, and this one is fairly easy. It took a while to get used to the way th locking mechanism works, but I couldn't see myself using the traditional style lock after this knife. At first, the knife felt slippery due to the pattern in the plastic grip, but I've also grown quite accustomed to it. I love that this knifes locking mechanism keeps it safe in my pocket, but quickly deplorable. The metal pocket clip is perfect. Long enough to stay in my pocket, and it's in a great position for concealment, other than its metallic color, since the clip reaches almost the tip of the grip, so it sits well in my pocket. What also makes it great for day to day carrying, is that it's thin and light weight as well. I hate carrying things in my pocket, so it's slim profile makes it easy and unnoticeable. The way the clip is positioned also is a key factor for me. It hangs in my pocket upside down, so when I reach for it, there's less fumbling and flipping the knife 180 degrees before using, and more straightforward draw and deploy functionality.

My ONLY gripe, is that he center plastic piece that runs through the knife has started detaching itself from the sandwiching metal plates that give the knife structure and rigidity. Still stays together, but nonetheless, a concern that I will try addressing with warranty. Overall, amazing knife. Just wish it was still in stock at my local shop I got it at. Sad to see that the reviews for the pricier assisted opens gerber offers have been quite poor, was looking to upgrade but looks like I'll be sticking with this one for a while.

I've had mine for close to one year now, this is hands down one of the best knives I have ever owned. It does what its made for with no hassle at all. The spring system is super durable, I've seen many times where one bad landing and the spring gets dislodged, rendering it useless (or boring at that). Only recently has it needed to be sharpened a bit because of a few nicks in the serrations. My other knives are simply no match for this one, I absolutely love it. Its a well known knife as well, many people I know have it as well and love it. Buy it now, you wont regret it! I carry mine day in day out as an EDC. It has never let me down.

I lost my Gerber Paraframe II the other day and decided to get a replacement. I went to my local knife dealer and went in to get another paraframe, as I was looking, I happened to see the new Gerber Fast Draw. I already knew that the Paraframe was an award winning formula but something just beckoned me to the Fast Draw, and I will say, I'm glad it did.

(I had bought a SOG Trident a few days earlier but it just wasn't cutting it, pardon the pun) I compared the Fast Draw to the Trident in EDC tasks on a regular basis at home and at work. The Fast Draw was the superior knife hands down. (Not to mention the fast draw opens about 5x faster making the Trident look like you are manually opening it)

It has a stronger deployment than the SOG does and is reinforced with metal on the inner linings where SOG is ALL Plastic.

This knife feels great in hand, very comfortable, opens faster than a bullet flies, and feels stronger than most other knives I have carried. Now as most automatic knives require, every now and then you have to tighten the blade because of the hard automatic opening but the Gerber has yet to show any signs of blade play.

As far as the blade is concerned, you just can't beat the Gerber Titanium Nitride Blades. (Again, this knife was even Sharper out of the package than the Trident ever thought about being)

I have always been edgy on carrying assisted opening knives for fear of the spring wearing out of the knife breaking, with the fast draw, I carry and use it, every day without a second thought.

Honestly, I am at a loss for words for describing how amazing this knife is.

All I can say is, go to your local dealer, get one of these, and you won't be disappointed.

Thanks Again Gerber Team for another amazing knife.

I have had this knife since 2007 or 8, I believe and I have had two of them. I used the first one on the farm for everything from cutting twine to digging up roots to cutting small branches, rope, and wires. Needless to say, I used my knife. I worked for a summer as a water ski instructor and I had to swim under the boat a couple of times and cut rope out of the prop. I believe because of this the spring mechanism rusted and broke one night in about -2 degree weather. I sent the knife back to get the spring replaced and Gerber sent me a brand new knife. I was excited at first, but the knew metal on the knife they sent me wasn't as high of quality. My first knife's metal was grey and my second one's is kind of black. It's still a great knife and I still don't leave my house without it. It has stood up to many things from cutting carpet, cardboard, rope, meat (after disinfecting), tin, and plenty of other things. After about years of use, I still believe it's a great knife. Now I could just use a knife with a metal body. Rookie mistakes, y'all.

My dad bought me this knife for Christmas in 2008. I made it my EDC knife immediately and used it until mid February of 2012. I used it for your average tasks around the house and office. I tuned the edge on it, probably, 2 times a month. It was always reliable and it saved me numerous trips to my tool box for wire cutters to cut zip ties (pretty normal part of my job) The reason I don't have it anymore...well, I left it in a dressing room. I'm guessing it fell out of my jeans when I was trying another pair on. Hopefully, whoever has it now is treating it well.

The fast draw is a pice of trash. I had it for a week and now is no longer working. I dropped it from about a foot off the ground and it completly ruined the firing mechanism. Now I have a pice of trash for $40. I don't know who Butch Vallotton is but he should be embarrassed to have his name on such a P.O.S. I wouldn't recommend a gerber to anyone after this. I should have known when I saw it was made in china. I would have gave 0 stars if I could.
