This dual purpose machete solves two obstacles: chopping and sawing. Successful at both, the 18 inch blade features a full performance saw on one side, a 15 inch fine edge blade on the other. With a Gator Grip handle to keep it secure, it is ready for anything.
The Gator Machete has a 15-inch fine-edge blade on one side and an 18-inch high performance saw blade on the other. It’s forged of high carbon stainless steel. The handle is covered with a Gator grip rubberized handle for comfort and control. It comes sheathed in a nylon case for secure carry. Made for use in the wilderness, as well as the backyard, it’s a dual-purpose, lightweight machete for beating back the underbrush and trailblazing.
I wish I would of read the reviews before I bought this over priced junk. Very soft Chinese steal. The blade rolled over and chunk of the blade ripped off on the first use. Had to switch to my cheap $6 harbor freight machete to finish the job. I lost all respect for Gerber products. DO NOT waste the $20 on this machete. The people that gave a good reviews, I want what they are smoking. Probably a Gerber employee.
Please do not buy this. It is soft steel. the blade edge rolled over with moderate use. After i filled a warranty claim with the company they told me that I needed to pay my own shipping for claims. never have i ever had to do this with ANY company. Never been a Gerber fan. Definitely solidified that with this experience. Take your business elsewhere. If i could give it 0 stars I would.
I purchased this dual purpose machete for it's multi task capabilities. I chose Gerber based on my excellent results from my lock blade Gerber knife I carried while in the Navy decades ago...Still have that knife and still love it. As well as the use of a few Gerber multi tools I have.
The machete (Gator # 31-000758) was used for the first time on a standing dead Douglas Fir that was about 4" in diameter. I initially tried the saw edge and it was not useful. In fact, after about five or so minutes the saw teeth were dulled!!!!! and I was only about 1" into the tree trunk. I switched to the blade side. I figured I could chop this little guy down easy. After four or five swings I realized this machete was NOT good at all. The blade side bent over with each swing and now looks like a wavy edge ribbon more than a blade. These are not superficial bends for the blade is ruined...On a Fir tree!!
This is NOT what I expected from any Gerber product. I passed over Harbor Freight products thinking they would be exactly what this Gerber proved to be.
I now still need a dual edge machete and Gerber is no longer on the list of viable candidates. I am very disappointed.
Do better Gerber. I have proof that you once were excellent but that does not mean you get to become terrible and hope I don't notice.
Bought this because it says Gerber but after one swing the blade rolled and bent making it worthless.
Just got it and one swing on a wax myrtle and the blade was bent to hell. Gerber refused to refund me my money. Will never buy anything from a company who won’t stand behind their products.
Pure junk. I used this knife for five minutes to take the small branches off some dead fall for a camp fire. The thickest branches were about 5/8" in diameter. The edge was destroyed. Multiple rolls and bends. I am very disappointed in this product.
After buying this machete I do not think I will be a Gerber customer anymore. I would have done better with a Walmart special for 8 dollors. What a waste of money.
This machete is a great tool. the saw on the spine is super handy . The steel is good. It sharpens easy and edge is strong and lasts. I use a drag sharpener and it puts a beautiful edge on it It's my go to for tool bushwacking or setting up camp. Sheath is good as well . The only thing that's wore out on the machete is the textured "gator grip" but the handle is still grippy even without the texture. Ignore the other bad reviews of this product cuz I'm telling ya it's your best bang for your buck$
Blade damaged on first use - cutting small branches which a much cheaper machete would cut it without damage. Don't waste your time with this. I'll not be buying Gerber again. The blade was sharp while it lasted, though, and the design is good apart from the quality of the steel - eg feels balanced.
I used it to cut small branches from a tree! I was using it and after 5 minutes I notice it wasn’t cutting anymore! The blade bended and the edge curl in. This is simply a bad product!
Don't waste your time or money on this!!!!
If I could give it Zero stars I would! This could NOT have been made with high carbon steel. After about an hour of light to moderate usage, the cutting edge looks like the edge of a lasagna noodle! Will be returning ASAP!
I do not recommend this product.
This is my favorite tool to use in the woods. Effective, simple, reliable. Definitely worth the money. I think these one stars are bots or something
I own a few Gerber pocket knives, which are very good, quality knives. But, the Gerber Gator machete is the biggest piece of crap I have ever purchased in my life. Chopping into a 2in sweet gum sapling, the edge of the blade just curls under. When I Googled Gerber Gator machete it is nothing but picture after picture after picture of people with the same problem with your product. There should be a damn recall on this, but there's not. So you people keep scamming customers into buying this worthless metal machete. Warning, do not waste your money on this machete if you plan on chopping small saplings or anything thicker than 1/2 inch
This machete sucks. I cut 20 minutes and the blade chipped and broke and looked like the saw side on the back. I would have been better off using my Case knife. My son has a Sog machete and its 100x better than this. I am very dissappointed and expected better for what i paid.
This is trash. Sure, It cut great a first, but a branch with any resistance will bend and deform the blade. My Gator Machete looks like I've been trying to chop copper pipe. I expected better from Gerber. What a let down.
Biggest piece of garbage I’ve ever paid money for. One swing at a small sapling and the cutting surface was deformed. I would have been better served buying a plastic pretend pirate sword at the dollar store. I’ve used Gerber products for a long time and I am really let down by this.
It looked great, felt great, and lasted about 20 swings before the blade resembled the saw on the back. The metal folds and chips away. Ok for small, dead and rotten branches, but ANYTHING with ANY chance of resistance will destroy this product. Asking for my money back...
All the reviews on this product are accurate. Wish I would have read them before buying it. Brand new out of the sleeve, after 20 mins of cutting small vines, the blade bent like cheap aluminum. Unreal.
This knife is absolute rubbish. Tried to cut through some small branches and the blade buckled and basically folder over. What a total waste of money. Don't waste your time and money on this knife. Its a shame Gerber has no pride in its products
Seriously!!?? I decided to cut the branches of my x-mas tree (Tree is like 1.60m high...) Took me like 3 minutes. And I end up with a deformed blade with two nocks in it. And that was only like 2cm thick branches. Only wood. Thank god I didn't take it on a real adventure for a week. It s unacceptable too sell cheap S*** equipment like this!
Worst product I've ever bought. First swing at a branch and the blade bent over like I hit a piece of steel, not worth $2. Oh and the sheath broke off my belt first time I put it back in it.
I have Gerber that I have trusted my life to this machete is a major POS. Dull as a bat cannot be sharpened properly, couldn't cut its way out of a Golf green! Oh yes did Mention that the edge rolled cutting some vines on my property? I know it wasn't expensive but why put the Gerber name on it if it's CRAP!
This knife we had out today to cut fur brush. After a few swings it has major dings in the blade. Not worth the 27 dollars we paid for it.
This is a cheap cheap product. I have Gerber knives and am well pleased with them. First time out clearing limbs with the Gator Machete, the blade bent like it was tin foil. Went directly into the trash. The Gerber name does not mean what it used to. One star is too much.
Not even worth the money it would cost for me to ship it in for the warranty replacement. On my very first use of this machete, while trying to clear a path through some light brush, the blade suffered a major ding. I've had some great Gerber tools in the past, but whatever cheap steel/alloy went into this blade it couldn't even stand up to a 1/2" branch. Left a huge "ding" in the blade, torquing almost a 2" section of the blade rendering it useless for its purpose. Guess I could still use the saw blade on the back in a pinch, but I'm afraid to use as a machete again out of fear the blade might actually break. Very disappointed, both in the quality of this tool and the warranty, which in this case would cost 50% of what I paid just to send it in.
I was looking for a good machete and was having a difficult time finding any machetes in my area. I finally found two really cheap $10 ones and this Gerber Gator which was $22. I bought all three to see which I liked the best. This Gerber had a good feel to it but when I tried to sharpen it the metal was so soft that my edge kept rolling over. I tried several different methods of sharpening which same results. This machete is a piece of junk! The two other no name brand $10 machetes sharpened beautifully and hold their edge. Gerber has a good reputation but this machete is absolute junk!
Purchased this item because the Gerber products were supposed to be great. I was misinformed. The first time I used it, it was great. After that huge nicks and gauges. It is like an aluminum can.
This Machete is awesome! The first time I went outside and tested it by chopping down a 2 inch in diameter tree, it passed the test with flying colours. The tree flopped down after 1 stroke of the strong Machete. The saw is also amazing. For the strength and sharpness of this Knife/Tool the $40 in Canada or around $30 in the USA this was totally worth it. I would pay $100 for this Blade. I am new to GERBER but if this is what all their knives are like I am surely coming back for more. My only worry with the Machete is that the saw will destroy the back of the sheath when pulling it out.
After the first use the cutting edge of the blade developed a lot of dings in it. The fourth use of the machete the cutting edge peeled back like a tin can making it useless. Evidently Gerber does not use a good quality of steel for this product. Poor quality. Save your money on this machete. Wish they had a place you could show pictures of the product.
First time using this product, resulted in multiple spots of the blade folding over. I was cutting small branches no larger than 1" in diameter. Obviously very poor blade quality, and I would not recommend this product at all for what it is intended for. I have other Gerber products that work very well, so was very disappointed that this particular machete did not meet the Gerber quality I've seen with my prior purchases.
This machete is crap... used it to chop a 1" branch, neither dead, nor dry, and the blade folded over like it was made from tinfoil... FIRST USE of this unit I might add... Sure glad I didn't have to depend on it for a "real" situation... If any reading this review already bought it, I'm sorry to know that... Avoid this unit and spend a wee bit more on a REAL machete.
First off some people need to watch training videos before attempting to use this machete. I used this machete to cut throw a 1.5inch thick oak tree with only one swing and little effort. I then found a newly downed 5in thick tree in a quad trail and proceeded to use this thing like it was an axe. After about 3 min of hacking away at this 5in tree I managed to cut my way through it. and then remove it from the trail. The blade does need to be sharpened now. But I don't think it was designed for that kind of use. GOOD PRICE AND VALUE. JUST REMEMBER TOOLS WORK THE BEST, WHEN THEY ARE USED PROPERLY!!!!!!
This is a very bad product. I wish Gerber had more pride in their brand and wouldn't even sell something with a blade / steel made this cheaply. The first time it was used it to chop 1/2" to 3/4" branch off a tree, the blade dented and folded over on itself and even broke off a pice of it in the middle of the blade the size of nickel. The machete is ruined. I had expected something a little better than that. AND, I would have been willing to pay double what i paid if the product was actually well made. Gerber, I have some of your USA-made knives and multi-pliers from years ago. They are awesome. The new products made in China are terrible. I don't recommend this product to any one.
I purchased this Gerber at Walmart for $16.95 and love it, I usually carry a katana fishing and use it to clear brush that's in my way so I can throw places other can't. I wished it was longer so I didn't have to lean over to cut at the ground, 9 back surgeries will do that to you, but other than that I love the item for the price, Some people here think you can use something like this to cut hard dead trees and never sharpen it, That's not the case with anything.
I bought the Gerber Gator Machette to chop some limbs of a tree that fell in my your. The blade basically bent after a few branches. What a worthless piece of junk. I am very disappointed. Amazon will not refund my money or give me a new one. I will never buy Gerber products again.
This is a very bad product. I wish Gerber had more pride in their brand and wouldn't even sell something with a blade / steel made this cheaply. The first time I used it to chop 1/2" to 3/4" branches off a spruce tree, the blade dented and folded over on itself. The machete is ruined. For $28 I would have expected something a little better than that. AND, I would have been willing to pay double that amount if the product was actually well made. Gerber, I have some of your USA-made knives and multi-pliers from years ago. They are awesome. The new products made in China are terrible.
Bought this for around $45AUD. Definitely required sharpening, don't subject this to heavy use without sharpening it, and it's not really suitable for heavy chopping. It's also hard to get it to have and hold a good edge, but for its price and with a bit of maintenance it's alright! Good for gardening and lighter vegetation.
I used this to clear brush from my yard and a chip came out of the blade. I thought maybe I hit an extra hard branch or something and continued using it, but then after about five minutes on another part of the blade, an inch of the blade bent inward. The saw part worked well until the blade bent. I was also planning on taking this camping but not anymore. To my fellow Boy Scouts, do not purchase this machete it is not a good product and could hurt you.
Bought this on a whim at a local retail store to cut the decorative beach grass in my yard but it was a complete fail. The knife edge failed to get through hardly anything at all in 30 minutes . Not sure what the metal is they use but there was a tremendous amount of flex I've never experienced in another blade. Heck, out of curiosity I took my wife's 15 year old introductory model Henckels kitchen knife and it worked 100X better.
Pro: Light weight, Grip fits well in hand, Sheath is also light weight.
Cons: Blade is to soft and will bend and curl, The saw is really not usable and snags on sheath, Requires sharpening after every use.
Overall: Not happy with the performance of the blade for the price.
Extremely disappointed. I love the American made tools gerber makes. I think they look great, fit my hand well, and most of all are reliable. This machete though, whoa, it is cheap! I'm sorry Gerber but, what the hell were you thinking? I have had it for less than 24 hours, used it once, and it already has rust on it everywhere, including the finish. I knew when I spent $25 bucks it wasn't going to be the best thing in the world, but I am truly surprised at just how bad it is. I really think that the only reason it was priced so high is because of the Gerber logo. From now on I'm only buying Gerber's USA made products. By the way, the sheath, is joke. I'm actually embarrassed to be seen with it.
In summary, Gerber, please stop making this cheap crap. I know that there are a lot of people who really are disappointed with how your QC is lately. I also know that those same people would be willing to shell out the extra cash to have a quality American made product. Me included.
I have had this machete for three months. It reliable against smaller things yes, but also medium objects (branch about 3 inches). It all depends on who is behind the handle. Yes, it is very thin. Yes, it wobbles a lot. If you know how to use a machete, not these other idiots that have probably been cutting straight down on a branch, bending the blade up, but knows the perfect angle for a slice, it works fine. Yes, if the blade was double the size, it would be amazing. But all you have to do is adapt to your blade.
Never spent so much energy with a machete not even being able to cut through small willows after 10 minutes.
I got one of these 2 years ago. I've put it through constant hell. I had the misfortune of it being stolen. A friend bought me a fiskars that was supposedly comparable. After one morning using it i realized just how good the gerber was, promptly returned the fiskars and bought another gator. I wouldn't bother with another machette. Its a true workhorse.
I have used machetes for years and picked this one up in a pinch from Canadian Tire to open a coconut with the graon. This is the first time I've ever experienced a machete bend and become deformed the way this one has. The quality of the metal is the poorest I have ever seen. It is extremely soft. I am definitely returning this blade as it is a piece of s*** Gerber shame on you... How dare you release a product like this.
This product model reflects badly on Gerber.
The blade is to thin and whips upon striking. A real safety concern!
This product should only be shown or used as a stage prop.
It looks amazing. It came extremely sharp. It got a lot of "OH's" and "AH's". But the first time I used it, I started chopping through a 4 inch tree branch and got half way. I'm extremely experienced using machetes. An idiot wanted to prove how macho he is so I let him try. He hit the branch wrong, like an idiot, and caused massive defects on the blade. It's ruined. I learned two lessons. Don't buy a machete based on looks and don't let people stuck on idiot use your tools.
I bought this machete because I thought Gerber had a good reputation for quality blades. Boy, was I wrong. Its a great looking machete, and works great on small thin stuff, but if your going into the woods to be a trail blazer, this is not the tool for you! The blade is to thin. Its sharp for the first few minutes and cuts very well. But after repeated use, the blade bends and warps. The sheath also doesn't hold up well on the hip. After two weeks it was shot with the fabric pealing away, eventually ripping all together. Don't waste your money! Move on...!
My 9 year old son bought this for me for my birthday.
He used his own money.
Blade bent in about 10 minutes.
Lucky for you, I am going to keep it.
If it weren't a gift, it would be in the trash can.
I got this to clear brush from a trail in a wooded area. None of the shrubs or branches I was chopping were that thick, nothing that older machetes Ive had in the past couldn't handle, and it seemed to be working fine.
Suddenly, I got a strange chop that didnt go clean through, and when I checked the blade I saw that the blade edge had warped and folded under in a semi-circle. Underneath the fold the steel is torn. Needless to say this blade is now ruined on first use.
This comes from using very poor quality steel and not performing any steel tempering or edge hardening processes, probably so Gerber could drive cost down. For $30 however I expected it to be able to handle small to medium brush. Will be wary of Gerber in the future, they used to be higher quality but Ive been seeing more and more low-quality issues from them.
bought this blade because the one i got from walmart years ago you all know it the 10 dollar blade they sale the handle broke loose from it i found this one and was impressed by the handle the very first time i used it the freaking blade edge bent all over the place the metal is way to soft for real brush clearing the edge was plenty sharp but really it was to thin and soft pretty to look at but crap when it comes to real use since then ive fixed up the old walmart blade and its still does the job fine go figure huh
I haven't had any problems so farwith it and the only problem I got is when I got it it wasn't so sharp but still good knife
I had the same problem. This isn't a heavy duty machete. This is a light duty machete. If you're truly going into the jungle or clearing some tough brush, the cutting edge is going to warp.
Bought this to have something lightweight for carrying in my tree climber and clearing shot paths. Didn't last a day. A whole 10 inch section of the blade came off. Bought it at Bass Pro and can't find the receipt. Guess I'm stuck with my 2nd terrible Gerber product purchase!!!
I had really high hopes for this machete, it looks awesome and felt awesome in the hand.
Blade felt durable and strong, and the rubber handle had really great grip and was comfortable.
I took this machete out brand new, and took It on my 3 day camping trip on thee river at Lake Mohave, AZ.
I was only able to cut down a few small bushes and branches before the blade dented, and eventually peeled back.
After continuous use , and using different ends of the blade I had to put it down.
And believe it or not, Had to borrow a friends Harbor Freight machete that held up way better other than the handle getting loose.
I've never had to second guess Gerber with their knives, but after this experience I'll be skeptical in the future to make another purchase.
I bought this thinking it was durable. Very lightweight and cuts well. However, the blade bends when a tough thin sapling is struck. Also the blade chips and dulls very quickly when accidentally hitting unseen rock. I thought this blade would be Durable and Sturdy and Last Forever. I sharpen before each use in my large gardens and small farm. To sharpen I tend to use my kitchen knife honing steel, which works great. I'd rather have a heavy blade that could take a beating and still remain keenly sharp. Thanks.
I bent the blade cutting woody brush no thicker than 3/4". Also there's no weight to the blade to give it a "sweet spot". I will be sticking with my Ontario Knife Company machete.
The only redeeming factor is the saw to cut through thicker stuff...
I found this machete at the end of a bushwacked trail. The brush cut seemed several days old, yet the blade only had minimal rust. # pretty durable.
I really like this machete, however I wish that the blade was more durable for a high carbon steel product. The blade is chipping after less than 6 months of ownership, using for small branches...etc...
This didn't last more then 4 hours of cutting honeysuckle or wild overgrowth ....it's got some funky s warp in the edge of the of the machine edge part of the blade... the machete itself did not bend just a one inch section of the machine edge is waffled not dented or dinged but if you were to hold it up and stare at the blade edge it's S shaped .... we will see how well the life time warranty is as this will definitely be returned I have to admit it did cut well until that point
bought it for 20 dollars back in 2009. still have it in the back of my truck. sharpened the blade a couple times over the years. great product but I wish it was made with higher quality steel. I would honestly pay 100 dollars for it if it was made with 420HC steel. The handle feels great too.
I bought this machete and within the first use it was destroyed. I was chopping limbs off of a small downed pine tree over an atv trail and chunks of the blade were ripping off. Lots of dents in the edge too, when did wood become stronger than steel? Probably when your products became Chinese crap. I didn't appreciate wasting money or the cut on my cheek from metal flying off the blade.
This worked great for 2 weeks, but when I started choping a small tree, doing what this is made for, the handle completely snapped off from the blade! Dont waste your money! ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great blade, it comes not so usable out of the box, what you need to do is spend some hours getting the edge to the angle you require. spend 7 hours out in the Malaysian jungle making a new trail and the sharpness held really well, its weight was good enough to give solid swigs for thicker branches. the two in one feature mean that you can save weight by having one tool for all your cutting needs.. saving weight when your on a multiple day jungle trip.
A little let down, as I thought all Gerber is made in the USA. I rushed home to open it and the back of the package tagged: Made In China.
i have this machete and love it the only problem is after a month i saw a very noticeable bend in the blade then a week later i saw another
Great product except the blade dents even on small limbs. Very sharp and gets the job done but the blade is brittle
Cheap and very useful, I was not disappointed with my purchase.
Great for ferns, tall grass or weeds. NOT for chopping or hacking. Look to the Machete Pro for that.
I've used it a moderate amount, and not very gently, and it is staring to show wear.
Great price, great blade.
For $20 you would have trouble going wrong with a worse blade, for this one it's a great deal!
Works well with yardwork, with whatever you task it to. Edge begins to burr fairly easily but it's nothing a carbon or ceramic sharpener can't handle. Keep in mind, it is a machete so it does not chop, it swings and clears (and it does!). Used inappropriately I would expect it to chip and split.
Sharp only matters if the blade is strong enough to make it. Bought two both had the blade bend on small limbs. Spend your money on something worth it.
Used it only once and the blade justed tear !!! Try to contact Gerber but I need to spend more on shipping than the value of the blade !! But it can make a great paper cutter !!
This is an excellent blade.
I keep a heavy duty folding GP knife, serrated and sharp, and this little baby on my bag. All I need.

THIS is my choice Machete. Hands Down.
I bought this machete about a month ago. At first it worked well but after using it only 5 times on inch and a half green tree limbs, the machete broke in three places and I returned it. I will not buy Gerber machetes again. Poor quality.
i got this machete on my birthday in june, its an awesome blade, saw is nice and sharp, the blade itself is somewhat dull but can be easily sharpened, today i put it on my belt for the very first time and the belt loop pritty much ripped right off, can this maybe be fixed and or replaced wit ha better material?
Hey...it's a $20 blade! I've used mine around the yard and around the camp site. I'm quite pleased with it. It doesn't hold an edge very well but the saw works great. For the price...it's a darn good buy.
I went camping this weekend and was cutting some tree branches. At one point I looked down to see a large dent in the blade. I didn't hit anything but wood and there was no cause for it The blade is very sharp and it cuts through wood like it butter but the blade itself is weak. I wouldn't buy another one at the price.
I used this machete around the yard, to clear vines and brush. It worked really well for that, as long as I was cutting green stems. However, when I tried to prune a 2" branch out of a tree, the first four hits all chipped a 1" long by 1/4" deep chunk completely out of the blade edge. It seems the steel is much too soft for anything besides cutting grass...
Used this for 30 minutes in backyard small brush and it has waves down edge.I have never seen anything like it.Contacting warranty department.
Why does the blade bend in little places like dents. Mine has two. Makes it hard to sharpen. Can it be straightened out?
I had tested it just to see what it could do. I had used the back saw to cut down branches and such. I bring it hunting, camping, and hiking. Does it's job excellently.
this is a great machete!. I used it to clear brush and tree branches and it performed very well. my only complaint is it a little flimsy but other than that its awesome.
it is a very good machete. although I have two downsides, one is when I hit a hard tree , the blade kinda folds. also its very flimsy. other than that its a great machete, ideal for cleaning brush, sticks and vegetation. keep it up gerber
I love my Gator Machete, it is made well. It is strong and durable, and you still have a saw for the bigger stuff. I love how the lanyard will stop your hand from sliding up the blade. And the price is good. Most $20 machete's are junk, but not this one.
I am impressed with this item, it is alot better quality than expected at that price. Nice and sharp on delivery. very comfortable handle. I will definatly come back if i need more
I've used a multitude of different machetes over the years and nothing comes close to this for design and quality. It hold and edge better than others, takes less energy due to its shorter than average length and its made from good steel that won't bend and get flimsy when cutting the toughest trees like mesquite. All around useful tool and great buy
i bought this machet two years ago and i just bent it . it has gone throu soft gardening to hardcore field clearing without pain and even chopped 50 cm wide trees .
I used this tool to brush out a trail, after checking the blade I found that it was notched or bent in three places. I'm going to try to clean up the blade. Other than that, it is a very good tool for brushing.
I have tried this blade out in the woods while cutting firewood. We used this to clear away grape vines and other weeds to get to the trees. I bought one for myself today and expect many years of use
Hey I used your Gator machete works great blade design and the saw are very well designed. however i dont care for your handle it is very blistery hard and not very ergonomic. after a few minutes of continuous chopping it feels like a brick in your hand.
Great Price !!!!!!!
this machete is one of my favorite tools and all though not care free it takes care of business. just don't hit a knot in anything bigger than 1 and a half inches or it dent the blade inward
I am an Alaskan backcountry Guide and have used this thing for a couple years now, itis great for chopping alders to clear a path which is way tougher than anything you'll see in the lower 48. The blade holds up great, but like any tool used in the field rerequires some care. Sharpen as needed, remove rust and oil as needed, its not a splitting maul, or an ax, all carbon steel rusts (oxidizes) left wet (duh)...keep that in mind and you'll use this tool for years to come.
I recently purchased this machete at a local gun shop and used it the next day to clear shooting lanes! with the factory edge it sliced thru brush and small trees! Then let my friend use it and he decided to hack away at dirt and rocks and bent the blade up pretty good but after some lite tapping with a hammer and sharpening its back to normal!! Havent had any problem with the sheath yet but we shall see how it holds up! plans to buy more good job Gerber!
I got this for US$20. I've had it for almost 3 years through countless uses in the heavy woods around Southern Ohio's coal country, and the sheath, unlike most apparently, has held up extremely well. The blade tends to rust a bit after cutting wet brush, but some steel wool takes it right off. It doesn't take a lot of sharpening to get going, either. If you've got a good arm, this one will not let you down.
The sheath broke at the belt strap and the blade got a little rusty in the rain. Gerber, please upgrade your quality of steel.
Bought this machete yesterday and after a quick test run I could tell that this was very good quality. I am amazed that I could get this at such a low price. The only problem with this machete is that it is so Aesthetically beautiful that I don't know if I want to use it. I guess maybe I"ll have to buy another one just for display!
"A worthless Piece of junk" I don't think so. I love it. It's made well with spring in the blade to keep it from breaking if it gets used the wrong way. Rubberized handle allows you to keep control in your swings without fear of it slipping out of your hands. It also helps reduce the impact felt in your hands as compared to a hard grip. A built in lanyard helps in retention and helps to prevent it from becoming a throwing knife!
This machete is equally at home in the tool box, garden box or preppers box. The sheath has a Velcro retention strap and one sewn in loop for belt carry. Riveted sheath and hard plastic inside coating helps resist slices.
Don't forget the wood saw on the back side of the blade.
My negative's are it's made outside the U.S.A. I would have paid more for U.S.A. quality product. If your looking to attach this to your pack, it's a civilian sheath.
It also comes with the GERBER U.S.A. Lifetime Warranty!
I am a surveyor and spent a little more on this machete, the blade is nice and easy to sheath but the first day I used the machete the blade bent. I hammered the blade back and then used it again the second day and the same exact thing happened.
I got this product at a local store, and it is fantastic. It comes sharp and handles well. The fine edge slices through thick saplings with little effort, and the serrated edge is extremely durable and effective. I definitely recommend this dual-purpose tool for any outdoorsman.
The blade was just too soft to handle brush more than a half inch thick. After about an hour of use, the the edge looked like I had beat it against a rock instead of wood. Not even worth getting it replaced...
Well aparinly my old post was deleted bye web sight owners so i will post agen with update
this was the worst perchis of my life i went and bot one of there and it bent LITARLY as SOON as i got it home after 5 swings of the thing i figured maybe it was just flawed and had it replaced and tryed agen and it did the EXSACT some thing i got my rufund pist and angry and went to big 5 and got something worth my time i advise all potencghal byers to avoid this with there life
The best machete I have ever had, it cuts through branches like its butter. Cleared a path in my canyon and works great.
I've had mine for a few years now. From camping to yard work to butchering it hasn't fail me yet. My last use was splitting a whole frozen hog! Blade bent just a bet. But. I bent it back straight, sharpened it and kept going.
The metal is flimsy beyond belief. I wanted this to clear a trail through light brush on my way to deer stands. After it arrived I tried it out on small (less than 1/2' dia) branches in the woods around my home.
Started out great, quickly slicing through branch after branch. However, after just 5 minutes I checked the blade and immediately noticed a inch long dent in the blade. This "thing" is absolutely worthless.
I cut down and removed the roots of a 20 foot pear tree with this machete. I used a high carbon grinding tool and a ceramic sharpening tool to sharpen the machete. This blade can take a beating and not break.
tl;dr you have to sharpen it but then it is the best outdoor tool money can buy.
As in any task, use the right tool for the right job. This machete is perfect for was it's intended for. I looked at many reviews and for the money it is the best. I received my Gator Machete and was pleased with the the overall design. It worked well out in the field for cutting and chopping. For small and light tasks Gerber has a full line of fixed blade knives. DO YOUR HOME WORK before purchasing, I did. The Nylon sheath could use some work. Instead of velcro, I would like to see snaps, and two or more for loops for securing to a pack.
this is a wonder tool, glad i bought it, perfect balance, length and cost without decreasing quality, would buy more if need be. PS. machetes are NOT supposed to be RAZOR SHARP...some people, ugh... please do your research before leaving bad reviews, gerber has always held up to their reputation, i don't see them faltering any time soon.
last christmas i was given a gator machete as a gift, then it broke about 2 months later (the handle shatered) gerber promtly dealt with it and sent me a new one that i admit that i have not been to kind to in my adventures and this one as stayed by my side through thick and thin. thank you gerber.
I have tried many many types of machete and I find this Gerber Machete to be perfect. I work in the jungles of Belize and I know what a machete needs to have. It has to be strudy but still flexible enough. It has to be easy to sharpen with a simple file. Basically, any machete that you can buy for 10 bucks in central america will work but they do not have the gator grip. The reason why this machete is more superior then all other machete is the grip design. You can hack the jungle all day and never feel pain in your palm. Most machete are just plain plastic with a little protruding part at the end to stop it from flying out off your hand. This cause your pinky to hurt badly if one were to use for hours. Also D ring type handle are the worst it will destroy all your knuckles. The gator grip handle is perfect, it doesnt slip out of your hand, it is ergonomic, and when it is raining as it always happens in the rainforest, the rubber grip acuatlly give you a better grip. The saw actually works also. The only probelm is the sheath, It does not last long. So either Gerber should start selling sheath for it or they should make a longer lasting one.
machete is great. good blade & balance. Sheath didn't last an hour before the loop broke. I can't believe gerber actually put that lousy thing in the package.
i bought 4 gator machetes, one for myself and one each for my sons and son in law. just tried to use mine, it will not take an edge, sorry i wasted my money and sorry i gave my children this poorly made tool. i purchased Gerber knives in the past and had been very pleased.
Machete is the greatest tool in my gear. Hands down. The sheath, however, is useless. The belt loop on the sheath comes undone at first use. Brought it back, got new sheath- same occurence.
All of you guys saying it is dull do not realize that machetes are not supposed to be knife sharp. They are rough use tools. Anyways I bought one of these and I love it. It has a pretty nice balance for being so long.
this machete has extremley good quality for its price. i thought it would be a bit to big at first but after a few swings it worked out pretty well. the handle is super grippy and i think it weighs the perfect amount. i didnt sharpen it and it went through 2 -4 inch limbs like butter.
You people quit complaining. Any respectable knife owner should know how to sharpen his own tools so quit whining and go get a 600 grit stone and sharpen it. I have cut up countless branches with this machete. I'm able to strip a small tree of all those little branches in minutes. Im hoping I'll get the chance to butcher a zombie or two with it someday...........
It is a machete. Machete are not suppose to be Sharp it uses the weight of the blade to cut. I love that Machete one you know how to use it you can cut a 4 inch tree.
Always been fond of gerber... However, I was very disappointed with the Gator. As mentioned in a previous review the blade does come extremely dull, so that needed to be sharpened before heading out. Also, within an hour of walking the belt loop on the shealth tore off. The store where the Gator was purchased will not take it back because it has been used. Hopefully after contacting Gerber this can be replaced. In my opinion this is a good item for the price, just expected more from these guys!
I have bought many Gerber blades and always have had no complaintes about them, however this Gator Machete came extremely dull, almost a flat edge on it... Im sure once i get it sharpened it will preforme fine but you guys should watch your quality controll alittle close so blades like that dont get out and start to give you a bad reputation
It's pretty good i guess. As you seen in last night's premier of Walking Dead when i put this thing right through the skull of that zombie in the church it really holds up well. Perfect quiet, melee weapon in a zombpoc type situation.
I have a Gerber Gator machete one of my friends got me with his discount wher he gets supplies for his work with his discount it cost me $25. I used it this spring in the woods cutting brush on the paths we have to walk to get to the hunting blind. Then m
