I'd rate it a zero. Received as a gift. Have never been able to use as it is impossible to extend. Very frustrating to say the least.

Same here, used it for the first time to dig out some soft loam to level a camp chair in my hunting blind and the blade attachment bracket fractured. 6-8 strikes until it failed. Very dissapointed

Sounds like Gerber has a quality problem. I've had mine 10 years or so. Have beat it very hard through the years. Using for things it probably hasn't been intended for. Still going strong. My buddy has (had) one, threaded lock stripped out with minimal use. Maybe some were built in 3rd world country?!?

Picked up a Gorge for my get home bag. It's more spade than needed really. Decent for light digging and it's light. Tossed the box and decided to look at it again and found the bag inside, very bottom, with some documentation that guys never read.

I just got this unit for Christmas 2015 and I also didn't get a nice carrying bag. Bummer would like one that attached to mole gear.
otherwise strong and sturdy.

I bought the shovel basically to see if it could maybe be good in a pinch camping or hiking . So i start to use it and the thing cuts through the dirt like butter And my dirt on my property is like dry clay. And it fits in my hiking bag with out taking any space up. I highly recommend this shovel to any one who gos hiking or back packing or for a emergency situation . This shovel has a bunch of uses it even has a hammer on it. They are built great

I was in the military and used the entrenching tool issued to us. I have several of those but I was looking for something a little more packable. This is that tool. This shovel is small. This actually fits in places an army e-tool won't. I bought one several years ago and have used the crap out of it. Drove in tent stakes, dug holes, and done everything I would have done with the e-tool and it has never let me down.

I took this camping and it broke the first time I used it. I had to dig a cat hole. This shovel couldn't even handle that. I had to lay that monkey out on the bare ground. I left the shovel right next to it where it belongs. terrible.

I purchased my Gorge shovel several years ago. I've used it hard over that time, digging, scraping and some prying, it has never failed me! I backpack/prospect in the way outback of California and I have learned I can depend on my Gorge shovel.

It has a small shovel head and I bought it because it was a small shovel/hacker/beater/digger for whatever size hole I wanted to dig. It is still going strong and will go out with me in 2013. Oh, and the hammer does work and it is a lot better than using a rock with the possibility the rock will hurt my hand.

This was a waste of money. I expected a lot more from Gerber. And dont think their warranty will help. Look elsewhere for a good quality product.

It broke the first 6 inch hole I dug. It was soft most dirt with tiny roots. The spade broke right off on the weld spots.

Took it on a 5 day trip in the Adirondacks. Dug 3 6" deep holes in soft dirt (it rained every day) and the spade snapped on the fourth.

Just like the other comment, product snapped clearly in two pieces when digging.

My buddy where laughing as he was prying, hammering, and smashing stuff with his ebay bought semi-plastic version.

I expected better from gerber...

Product failed on first use while digging in soft dirt. Unacceptable.

In addition, the edge of the spade is thick and dull, there's an opportunity to enhance the effectiveness of this tool with a grinder, but I did not have a chance before the product fa
