Featuring the FAST 2.0 assisted opening technology, the partially serrated blade deploys quickly when your life depends on it. With both a plunge lock and a safety lock, this knife is safe in use and in pocket.
Surviving the unexpected is about being prepared, and the Bear Grylls Survival AO Folding Knife exceeds the standard. Few people know more about survival than Bear Grylls, ex-British Special Forces officer, experienced mountaineer and respected survival trainer. Taking advantage of Gerber’s decades of experience and Bear Grylls’ adventure knowledge, the Survival AO folder gives its user the ability to engage with the surroundings in perpetual survival mode.
IMMEDIATE ACCESS FOR SURVIVAL INSURANCE
Quick access to the blade of a folding knife is imperative in survival situations. The Survival AO, featuring an assisted opening blade that deploys reliably and quickly with one hand, responds for instant use when the situation demands it. Using Gerber’s FAST 2.0 technology, the Survival AO implements both a plunge lock and a safety lock. The safety barrel lock will keep the blade closed when in a pocket, or as a secondary lock when opened. Closing the knife is a simple one-hand process: after the plunge lock is released, simply press it down against a firm surface.
SOLID STEEL IS BUILT TO LAST
With its partially serrated 3-inch 7Cr17MoV steel blade, the Bear Grylls Survival AO’s robust action works capably to cut, rip, tear, and slice, whether it’s box tape in a warehouse or branches for shelter in the woods. The handle is made of durable glass filled nylon with the familiar rubber over-mold for a solid grip in all conditions. A removable pocket clip and lanyard hole provide multiple carry options, insuring the Survival AO stands at the ready until summoned. The Priorities of Survival Pocket Guide is included with this knife, furthering its usefulness and potential life-saving utility.
I originally bought the non-AO version of the knife when it was distributed by Walmart. It was my EDC for months until I lost it in my grandparents field. I carried a bunch other knives to no avail after that. My grandfather found it two years later and and even in the rain and humidity it looked good. I made it my EDC again until it got stolen. I then ordered the AO version. I can honestly say that the original was better than the AO, at least for me. I'm ambidextrous so when I open it with my left hand from my back pocket I open with my pinky finger with the blade pointed down. That is a lot harder to do with the much stiffer AO action. With that being said I would take this knife with me to the deepest pits of Hell if I had to. EDC for life.
This is a great knife. The plunge lock is a great addition for safety. I love the style of one-handed opening. Haven't field-tested it yet but I'm sure it will do well. Thank you Gerber and Bear Grylls for a great knife :)
I received my first as a gift a couple years ago. It was my first with knife with AO and I don't think I could go back to carrying anything else. The size is perfect for carrying in a side jeans pocket. I clip it to my pocket to keep it at the top and easy to access. Unfortunately I lost the knife during a park clean up. The local big box store only carried the Bear Grylls Folding Sheath Knife, which I felt was a huge step down and disappointing as a replacement. That knife cannot be operated single handed opening or closing.
My wife was kind and surprised me with a new BG AO as a present. That knife i used as EDC for over a year before the star screws started to come loose. I hand to buy a precision star driver set to try and re-tighten everything down, and I used Blue threadlock to keep things in place. Unfortunately, the screws still came loose and I lost one that kept the clip secured. The loose clip started to snag things, so I sent it back under warranty.
While waiting for my warranty repair, I found the knife being sold online at heavy discount. I ordered two more. After Gerber replaced the knife I sent in for warranty with a new one, I ended up with 3 total!
Out of the four of these knives I've owned, I've only had the hiccup with one knife's screws coming loose, which was replaced under warranty. I'd say, statistically, these knives have treated me well. I can get them razor sharp, they are thin and pocket friendly, they allow single hand operation---both opening and closing with the side button.
I don't even bother using my old BG folder anymore. Now that I've got 3 of these, I keep one on the boat, one in my pocket, and I have a spare at home.
I wish they made a version of this without the serrated edge. I would buy one of those as well. The other AO don't put the clip in the same centerline spot, cost twice as much, or are significantly smaller. An ergonomic match for this knife with a straight edge would be a great option.
a very decent edc, my first lasted about 3 years, eventually the wear and tear caught up with it. as I've seen on many reviews, the warranty replacement seemed lighter, and cheaper. one other thing, the rubber grips wear out like cheap sneakers. other than that, i would recommend it to anyone. ps, gerber, you should expand the pro program to volunteers
Always wanted to buy but failed since it has high price due to the Turkish currency. My dad give this knife to me as a gift; tough, handsome, extremely sharp, nice grip, safe, opened by hand as previewed after few practice, and the blade is not moving up and down or sides. To cut a long story short; it's as precise as a high end swiss mechanical watch. All parts and features functioning as it has engineered to. And when it comes to the price, you'll see it deserves it. You pay for the knife itself; not for Bear Grylls. It has Bear Grylls on it because it deserves to have with its survival efficiency!!
I'm on my second/third one of these. These knives are awesome! The first one I used the tip to try & unscrew a small screw (dummy) & the tip broke. I still have it as a back up. My second one the release button popped out while I was cutting a box. Sent it to Gerber & they sent me a new one within 2 weeks. Great customer service! Love this knife & the best feature is the assisted open.
I bough this knife off Amazon from a trusted seller and had some issues with it. So I ended up with a counterfeit. So I told gerber and they sent me this new one that's feels and works great. I'm really happy with this knife and still use it everyday. The handle is gripy even when wet.
But if you get one that's feels weird call and check the number on the blade. Thanks gerber for making a solid knife that dosent cost 200$
Got this for a backpacking trip in June 2016. Used it for everything, including cleaning trout. Now I have it on me everyday. Love it.
In addition to the plunge lock that locks the blade in place when open, the knife also features a "safety lock" that is intended to lock the blade closed when not in use. The problem is that the internal metal rod that makes up the lock just flops back and forth whether it's open or closed, engaging and disengaging itself without any input from the user. The result is that it often times fails to lock the blade closed and likewise often times inadvertently locks the blade open even when the plunge lock is being depressed.
I used a small star driver to remove the safety rod and now the knife functions properly. I've owned many other Gerber AO knives and I can reassure you that the blade of this hacked Bear Grylls knife is no more likely to open unintentionally than other Gerber AO knives that don't have a secondary safety lock.
Other than that the knife blade is easy to open and close reliably with one hand, The molded handle provides for a secure grip. The partially serrated blade doesn't hold an edge very long but it's very easily resharpened. No blade wobble. Overall a decent knife, especially for the $20 that I paid for it from Amazon.
Like the AO quickness, solid lock up.
It was nice and sharp right out of the package.
I would have liked a matte black blade, the black on the blade is shiny and in my opinion makes the blade look cheap. It looks like spray paintedd blade to me.I think a black titanium nitride coating would have given the knife it's quality look it deserve. The blade reflects light even being black because it'sva shiny black.I prefer stealth.
Besides that I like the knife and will continue to buy Gerber knives. My next purchase will be the Gerber Torch, very tuff and stealthy so I'll have best of both worlds:) Thanks again to the guys and gals at Gerber.
Great knife. When I picked it up you could feel how well built it is. Theres no blade play its just stable.
I use it for work and play, love the thing. I had the previous model also and gave it to my son. Only real die hard knife "elite experts" that expect premium steel would complain about this knife. Thanks Gerber
I already wrote a review about 5 years ago about bur at the edge. at that time I think it's a good knife. after years,, i found it's not so great. the edge began chipping on hardwood. Perhaps, something isn't right in tempering or thermal treatment of the steel
The day I picked up this knife I was a bit nervous because I have heard good and bad reviews. When I got it open it shot out pretty fast and no blade play at all. Overall great knife.
This knife feels great in your hand. Good grip and weight. It's very light weight. Not too heavy in your pocket when carrying like my SOG AO. I use it daily to mainly open boxes and cut strapping. It slices right through no problem. I live in New England and camp a lot in the nicer months, I'm looking forward to putting it to some good use around the camp sight. So far so good Gerber, nice knife!
Having been a butcher/hunter/survivalist for 52 years I know something about knives. I haven't had any wrongs with Gerber from little clips to infantry models and Guardians. Also, I still am a butcher/hunter/survivalist. You can't have too many Gerbers. My point of view.
I've owned this knife for around 6 months as my EDC knife, and boy I've beat this thing around. From using it in wet and muddy conditions to cutting small branches, rope among other things. Over these months the blade has also been resharpened countless times as I find it doesn't keep a sharp edge for very long as the steel is just average compared to other knives in the same category ( I find the steel to be very soft and not very durable). However I put up with this for the whole time. Straight out of the box there was very little blade play and the spring had a little trouble fully deploying the knife but over time it improved tremendously. Now at the 6 moth mark The blade suffers from a considerable amount of blade play at the expense of an extremely quick opening time. The handle provides a decent gripping surface but is laughable compared to the G10 handle on say a Spyderco persistance but it is sufficient enough for it's purpose. Overall I'd say this is an average knife that serves the purpose of an EDC well and I'd give it a 6.5/10. ( I strongly suggest you read some reviews before buying this product to see if its the right knife for you compared to others in the same price category) *and I know this is ment to be a survival Knife but my review is based off it's merits as an EDC as I dont really have any use for a survival knife
I use this everyday. Excellent product & I've even bought a couple as gifts. No man should be without a knife!
I think that this knife is awesome it's so good and everyday I use it I can't wait for the next knife Gerber/ bear Grylls make and use it great job Gerber/ bear Grylls
as i love all bear grylls knives and other produds i like this one the most
good job gerber / bear grylls
Got it a month ago, threw it around at trees, just some wood with it, threw it around, and still no damage to either the knife or the body of it. Keeps a good edge, the AO system is perfect and the lock keeps it from opening in my pocket.
Awesome product Gerber, Awesome
huge fan of this one, i really love how the put dual thumbstuds so that lefties can also use the knife comfortably which is great cause being a lefty it is hard to find folding knives that i can comfortably. the construction is great and the locks work well. great product really glad i bought it !!!
I bought this knife a few months after Gerber released it. I packed it everywhere. Working, in the woods, at the creek, everywhere. And one day me and my girl friend was coyote hunting and I was using the knife to trim up a piece of wood to build a fire and I dropped the knife and the point landed on a rock and it broke off the tip. I'm hoping that the life time warranty will cover it because it was a great little knife and worked for any job I gave it.
Bought this knife about 3 months ago. Its a great knife. Once you figure out how to use the AO System its really awesome. Great if you need to use it quick. It stays razor sharp. Its a very strong knife and holds up good in most situations. I loved the one I had, but got out frog giggin one night and lost it in the pond. I'm gonna have to get me another one. Don't question it... just buy it. You wont regret it.
Great knife overall! If you're looking for an assisted open knife that has a notch on the top end to flick open then this product wouldn't suit you. This knife is assisted open, however it requires a flick of the thumb to open. The safety lock features are great to have to maintain safety and to make sure it stays open/closed. Very sharp and durable blade and knife overall. I recommend this to all.
I really, really enjoy knife. I own many Gerber and Bear Grylls items and this, by far, is the best one yet. Gerber's FAST 2.0 technology is a great improvement over previous models. The opening is much more fluid and easier to control.
The blade is razor sharp right out of the packaging. The rubberized handle is a great compliment, to ensure a firm grip during use.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a lightweight, EDC knife or anyone looking for a dependable AO knife.
Have had this knife not long after it was released. Sharp enough to shave the hair off my arm right out of the package. This is my every day carry knife and it preforms without flaw every single time. At the end of the day it rests on my night stand ready for the next day.
Gerber you killed it with this knife, I wrote a very detailed review of this knife on Amazon, but I just have to say WOW, I love this knife! The ONLY thing that would make this better is if it said Portland, OR on the blade....maybe in the future. The plunge lock and the safety button is the best combination i've seen, everything feels perfect on this knife. Keep this format and add to it!
Perfect upgrades from the old Scout. Every aspect is that much better!
Blade slaps open and locks in perfectly. Very smooth action! Love the Plunge lock & the Safety.
Thanks for listening Gerber! Great Job!
Just got the knife today and it's awesome. Really like carrying this in my pocket. I also enjoyed the decals you guys sent with the knife. Definatly gonna be sporting those around.
Very nice knife tried it out works great. Love the opening action, great lock on it. Look foward to carrying this knife for a while.
Gerber and Bear did a great job improving the folding scout knife , the AO is the folding scout knife improved with Gerber's f.a.st 2.0 assisted opening ( AO ) . In stead of a gray finish on the blade and rubber grip , it is now black . I think it looks a lot better black . The only thing I'm iffy on is the blade isn't carbon steal . Now it's 7cr17mov , whatever that is ? , all I hope is it stays sharp and takes a good edge and does what it's supposed to do ! . What if the things that stand out about this knife is the bonus lock for when the knife is in it's close position or open position . When the blade is open and is locked , the blade feels more solid . No wiggle no movement , nothing ! The weight is great and the pocket clip is great , a little stuff but will probably loosen up with use . All in all this is a great knife . I'm satisfied with my purchase . I did not purchase it from Gerber , I bought it off a vender . If you like the folding scout knife but with it was assured opening , then buy this knife , you will love it .
