The perfect complement to the Scout. The Compact Scout is lightweight and compact. Just the thing to keep tucked away in a pocket. You never know when you might need it.
Great knife. The blade is nice and strong and the handle fits my hand nicely. The lanyard hole is great for attaching to zippers, belt loops, backpacks, or anything. I used the hole to make a spear. All in all, great knife.
I love this knife, it is super handy and light. I have had it for about 4 years and it does not rust and never let me down. I wanted to buy one for my brother for Christmas and I can't find it any where. Any chance there are some out there for sale?
Cmon I loved this knife and it was discontinued of course even bear himself always carries one the only problem i had with it was the orange BG rubbed off i hope i can still get the scout essentials
My least favorite thing about high school was not being able to carry a knife, so when i graduated, i went and bought myself something i liked that wasn't huge. it was the scout. it was plenty sharp for me when i got it, and all Gerber knifes have a lifetime warranty, something i find a must have because I've always used knifes for things they weren't necessarily designed for(screwdriver, prybar, pencil, saw etc....) this knife looks nice and functions well, the serration takes up about half an inch too much if you ask me, and i'd rather it have a clip.
Very good knives, for what I do. They are not to expensive, yet good quality for a middle class like me.
Been looking for a small (under 4") pocket knife. Found this one at Wal-Mart today. Almost passed due to the 'Made in China' thing, but after handling it for a bit, decided to give it a shot. If it turns out to be a lemon, I'm only out 15 bucks. As for me, the Compact Scout is simply a pocket knife, a companion/backup to my Ka-Bar BK16, which is always at my side. After reading the reviews, my Pro's/Con's are as follows...
Pro's... At 3 1/4" long, and 1/4" thick, it takes up very little room in my pocket, next to my car keys. Feels good in the hand, nice 'three finger' ergonomics. It's a good looking little knife, and if the orange wears off of the ''BG' logo, I'm not gonna let it bother me, as I think it will probably look better in solid black. For such a small knife, it has a solid 'click' when locked into the open position. No blade wiggle when fully open, and I could not force it out of the locked position. The knife is brand new of course, so time will tell if these become issues or not.
Con's... Would have preferred an American made product, but this was exactly what I was looking for, size-wise, so I'll give it a chance. Not crazy about the plastic handles, but it is what it is, a 15 dollar 'light duty' pocket knife. My Ka-Bar will handle the bigger chores. I also prefer a solid blade over serrated edges, but again, I'll give it a chance. The blade could use a bit more 'edge' also. Tried it out on a piece of 1/2" rope. The Gerber won, but it took a little effort. We'll see what happens after I sharpen 'er up a bit.
Overall, my initial impression is good. Again, it IS a light duty knife, and will be used accordingly. I gave it 4 stars, because it is new, and basically untested.
I have had this knife for a few years now, and at first I did't think much of it. Then I started carrying around and have used it every day. The orange BG comes off but I think it's better with out. Very good knife.
At first I thought it was small but when i opened it it was large compared to most knifes, i love how it folds to such a small size but is still a lethal weapon and essential survival tool. Out of the box it was really sharp, I tested it by seeing how many swipes it took to cut through fibrous shoe lace, one swipe. Truly it is a useful knife and an amazing piece to my pocket knife collection
I like the compact size, light in weight, and serrated edge. The lock back is a must for me. **Please** include the belt clip by default.
Blade is sharp as any cheap Chinese pocket knife but the serrated part seems to be very handy. Fits perfectly on my denim pocket watch mini pocket. safety lock feature is the best part of this product but then again releasing the lock seems to require somewhat skill or else it's severe finger injury. Price is OK compared to other brands available alternatives.
This knife sure is essential when it comes to taking adventures seriously and safely. This is a kind of knife that can be used as a backup or emergency.
I just got it now it came so sharp and it shaved the hair of my leg. Only downside is its made in china so well see how long it lasts.
I have this knife, it is great at everyday needs but it lacks at carving sticks into spears as the knife has difficulties cutting through the core of the wood and it gets harder when the stick gets bigger.
that's what she said but whatever :P, epic knife, must get.
Nice Slim design. quite useful size. good knife. but i feel Serrated edge is not good / useful for a knife this small. fine edge is the best for a small blade.
I bought this knife originally as a back-up blade. I ended up buying one for everyone in my local military unit that is under my command. Works great in a survival situation for what it is capable of, and works great in a combat-simulated situation.
Love this knife, don't on it but my friend has it and it's amazing. Only thing I don't like is the serrated edge it takes up half the knife.
its ok knife for this price
only down side is it came not sharp out of the box
and the GB sign came off really easily
all in all ok knife for this price
if you are a fan of bear grylls its a must buy ;)
this is a great small pocket knife and it cuts very well and is light and it has a very good seraded edge.
Amazing knife opened it up and extremly sharp. The only thing that i dont like is how the handle is plastic. so the emblem comes of easy. but for the price amazing.
Fantastic knife. Its great for a backup camping and survival knife. I always have one with me when I'm outside.
I,m 65 yearsb old and have carried a pocket knife since I was probably 7 yrs old, I love this knife, its lighter than a similiar buck knife I own which is made in china and the gerber is made in USA, I also have one of your multi tools which is an amazing tool.
This knife is perfect for EDC. it is very lightweight so I don't mind it in my dress pants as i keep it in my suit pants all day and jeans on the weekend. The handle is perfectly shaped to hold for this size. The serrations work great on cord and zip-ties. The steel is easily sharpened and does hold a decent edge. This knife, however, is really only suited for light duty. I could see it breaking or chipping under heavy usage. I take my more durable knifes out for camping or if i know i will be doing a lot of cutting. I highly recommend this knife.
GOT THIS ON IN MY POCKET BUT THE ONLY THING WRONG IS WHEN ITS CLOSED IT HITS THE METAL AND THE BLADE AND I HAVE TO KEEP SHARPING IT.
Its a really nice knife, sharp out of the box and light as any knife i own. Blade locks up really well and there is no play. Over all its really great and i cant find any faults except the scales which are a little ruff. But over all its nice.
I got this knife as a gift from my grandparents, and when I came home with it I put it to the test in the woods! Help up amazingly! The only thing I would change is the blade maybe make a model (FE) instead of (SE) and also I bought another one just to carry in my pocket and after three days of carrying it the orange paint wore off of the bear grylls emblem, but overall its an awesome knife especially for a reasonably priced knife that holds up as good as this one!
Love it. Very light in weight, great for small survival kits, everyday carry, or as a small backup knife to your backup knife.
This is my new favorite carry everywhere knife. Super light and small. I don't even notice it in my pocket. This is great for small day to day tasks.
It's well made and feels good and solid. Perfect price for it too!
I just got this knife for Christmas and I love it. Love the design, light weight and the blade is awesome. Like it better then my old timer.
Bought this knife at Wal-Mart a couple of months ago, wanted something small and compact. The orange BG logo paint quickly wore off, after handling the knife for a few minutes, which I actually don't mind.
This knife is awesome, it's sharp, it's very light, it's well crafted. I keep it in my pocket whereever I go.
Would definitely buy this knife again, and would get it for a friend as a give.
I literally never leave the house without this knife. I admit that I had to give it a few passes on the stone when I first got it, but that is the only issue. No matter what I do, this little knife is there. So lite it disappears in a pocket. Adds no weight to a key chain EDC, and it has a magnificent blade and is very durable. Beats my Spyderco in every way.
i have had many knives for "survival" but this one is by far one of the better ones just as a everyday pocket knife it works good as a back up knife its thin light and sharp
This is a great little knife! I use this nearly everyday. It is comfortable and takes and holds an edge extremely well.Great job Gerber!
I like camping hiking. I am not a survivorlist. When in the woods for a knight or two in a state forest I don't need a 4" blade. This knife does enogh work to make my trip a success. If I were to go to backcountry then I need a big knife. Great product
This is the best little knife I have owned for the price. The only downfall is, the Bear Grylls logo came off.
Picked it up because I wanted a lightweight knife to wear with suits and dress pants. I have more substantial knives that I carry in jeans or outdoor wear.
It's perfect for any lightweight jobs you'll encounter when dressed up, but don't expect it to pry open elevator doors or chip your way out of a Turkish prison.
Buy it for what it is and you'll be pleased.
Bought this knife a few weeks ago to have as an "every day carry"-knife, as it is small it will fit in the smallest of pockets you could imagine. The knife itself is quite light, the handle could just be a tad thicker, but as it is - the knife performs good for the lighter tasks.
Phenomenal Knife within reason. As others have said, this Knife is really only useful for beginners and Kids. This is probably the best Cub Scout Knife out there as it is small in hand, comes razor sharp, is ultra light, easy to close and is undeniably legal almost anywhere. I can see it's use in Survival Kits as well where size and weight are critical as it is about the same size and weight as the Leatherman Squirt but with a bigger blade. The locking mechanism isn't superb and you could never baton with it but overall it is a great Knife. The only real downside considering it's field of use is that it is Made in China!
good small knife great for cutting rope and just as a knife when u need to cut small things but it would brake if u cut any wood or open osters so not that strong but still a good knife and the bg logo rube off way to quick but it is still worth getting
I got this knife for my birthday and it was great at first but a couple months after I got it I stuck it into a piece of wood and when I pulled it out the tip of the blade stayed in the piece of wood. nice try bear but try again
this knife isnt just for beginners its for anyone who needs a strong and lightweight knife. The plastic just makes it lighter and has a very strong lock back. I have it and love it and id reccomend this to anybody as a good backup knife or even primary knife ITS AMAZING!
This knife is only useful as a beginners knife, such as to a kid who is responsible and likes to go in the woods. Other than that, the plastic grip i dislike, and i do not like the locking mechanism on this knife either as i think the frame lock is stronger for a more practical use, but thats opinion.
Over all its a good knife for any little kid or scout who needs their first knife. Other than that, all others should disregard this little thing
The knife is really light, smooth mechanism, very sharp out of the box. The knife would erform much better without the serrations which i find inconvienient. Slightly disappointed with the handle being made of plastic which appears to be kind of cheap. Overall great knife, except it needs a full fine edge and a sturdier handle.
I bought this knife for my teenage daughter when we are out in the woods. It is a perfect knife and she is very pleased with it. She says it is one of the most prettiest knives she has ever seen, but ofcourse the knife does it job where it is designed for, regardless to the looks of it.
Well done Bear Grylls and Gerber!
This is a perfect little knife to wear on your key lanyard or just throw in your pocket. It performs small tasks very well and I have to say I am very pleased with it! Well worth the money.
this knife rox it is extremely sharp and light i alwase have this knife on me i strongly recomend his knife
I was going to go with a Ultimate knife, but then I saw this. For the cost I decided this might fit with my tight budget and would suggest this for anyone who is money conscious.
I thought this knife would be skimpy & lame, but it's excellent quality & EXTREMELY sharp! I may buy a few more I liked it so much! Now if only there was a Bear Grylls shovel.... (hint hint)
Like the Blade, very sharp edge and nice shape. Extremely disappointing to find the handle is just plastic and not rubber coated at least, or rubber coated metal as i was hoping.
I bought this knife a few months ago, it hasnt had a problem since. i have used it in all kinds of ways, and i havent had to sharpen it at all!. Very good knife!
This small knife came sharp out of the box. I like the serrations, it's grippy to hold, and, it locks our so it wont flip back on your fingers. This is not a serious blade but super useful in the wild
Not suitable for EDC. Lock knives are illegal in public in UK. Surprised the chief scout didn't know that.
I've gutted, cut fix lines, twist ties, and cut branches to brush for camo...amazing. No need for anything bigger unless your at war or gutting an elk...
This knife is really cool for EDC. It is a medium-sized, compact knife that you can easily put in your pocket. I LOVE the little signature on the blade.
THE COMPACT SCOUT KNIFE IS FANTASTIC IHAS A GOOD GRIP SHARP BLADE ORIGANAL SURATIONS LIGHT SMALL HEN FOLDED LARGE BEST GETTING THE WHOLE SERIES
THE COMPACT SCOUT KNIFE IS FANTASTIC IHAS A GOOD GRIP SHARP BLADE ORIGANAL SURATIONS LIGHT SMALL HEN FOLDED LARGE BEST GETTING THE WHOLE SERIES
it truly is a great knife! it may be small but do not underestimate the capabilities of this little guy! all, in all, great
GREAT KNIFE! i bought this knife and it is truly the best! nice and small cuts anything i want it to! and fits anywhere i want it to!
Great little knife for under $20. It holds an edge well and is so light you will forget that it's in your pocket. So far I have no real complaints (Other than the orange BG logo rubbed off) Buy it!
I've read the reviews and I only agree with the first two. I find that it has the sharpness for what I need a knife for and I like the light weightness of it. I've had Gerber knifes before and I've never been disappointed with the reliability or construction of the knife. I think that because I tend to lose or misplace my pocket knives, I like the fact that it's cost was under $15.
I bought this knife a few weeks ago and have been using it here and there. Nothing heavy-duty, but for the size and cost it performs how you would expect it to. The blade is actually of decent quality, and although it may not retain its edge, it is fairly easy to sharpen. The knife is light and barely noticeable. The handle is slightly flimsy due to the material but cuts back on weight well and can lock. All in all, it really depends on what its uses are for you. If you want a good affordable blade that is light, compact, and will perform light-duty cutting tasks, this is one to consider. If its purpose is intended for heavy-duty cutting, or life depending situations it will only serve as a backup. Hope this helps
Just got this knife today. Awesome. Cuts everything. I cut rope with it I didn't even use the serrated edge it took only one slice to cut it
I bought his knife becuase it looked lightweght and easy to carry. However, after opening the package, the knife appears to be very cheap. I have several other gerber knifes that have alway worked well. But this knife will not stay in it's locked positi
i got this knife for work and the blade wiggles alot back and fourth. its an ok knife bought it shows poor quality...wouldnt buy on again for $18...at best its a $5.00 KNIFE
