With an iconic design, the Gator series has become synonymous with craftsmanship and field-tested durability. A portable folding application partners with the patented Gator Grip handle to offer unsurpassed comfort and ease of use.
When Gerber debuted their line of Gator folding knives in 1991, they were voted "Most Innovative Knife of the Year" at the Blade Show. The handle is made of glass-filled nylon and it’s covered with a rubberized alligator skin texture for a tacky, comfortable grip. The lock-back clip point blade has a fine edge and is forged from 420HC stainless steel. Sheathed in a heavy-duty nylon case, the Gator is still one of Gerber’s most popular folders.
I came on here to see if they still made my old friend. I've had mine for FIFTEEN(15) YEARS, you see! Couldn't find the can opener tonight. I pulled ol' Blackie out, and much like snapping your fingers where you grab the blade with the middle finger and thumb, pushing the blade out and around with the thumb he snapped to attention ready to dispatch that which I set him upon: a can of beef-o-ronie.
Sharp enough to shave with and sturdy enough to open hundreds of cans over the past decade and a half, it still has that black sticky grip. It has been my constant companion all these years no matter the weather or what I shove my arm into to cut, deer or fish it never slips and it has been a pleasure to own.
Your fine workers gave me a finer gift at $50!
Thank you Gerber
I see alot of reviews that say it cannot be opened one handed, this is not the case. As with any Gerber knife, if you open and close it without fully locking it in open or closed position... In time the blade will be able to be opened with the flick of a wrist easily, while maintaining the strength and rigidity of a fixed blade when locked. Absolutely no blade play or wiggling.
I'd rate this as one of the best USA made knives under $45 that I've owned. It's a big blade but it's super light and easy to maneuver in your hand. The steel is 420HC which is easy to sharpen and hone. The satin steel finish looks great and the gator-skin texture makes for a handle that does not slip under wet conditions or when skinning game. For those of you who are complaining about not being able to open it one handed please keep in mind that this hunting knife was designed for two handed opening (just like the Buck 110). When you deploy the blade it clicks hard into place with the lock (you will hear it click loudly) and once it's ready the knife stays as solid as a fixed blade. This is not a pocket knife. It's meant to worn with the sheath it comes with on your belt. If you're looking for a one handed opener get another Gerber that comes with a belt clip and liner lock. If you're wanting a solid hunting knife that will give you years of hard use this Gerber Gator is the knife to get.
I received lots of gifts on my 40th birthday, and my Gator knife is probably the best of the bunch. It's been in use constantly since that day 15 years ago. Camping, 'round the house, job sites, etc ..it's on my belt every weekend (and I'd wear it to sales meetings if it looked right with a suit). It's comfortable in my hand, it's rugged, and SHARP. The last knife you'll ever buy.
I've had this knife since I was 12 so for about 10 years. It's been my go to knife for everything from gutting to whittling. I've never had any problems with it holding an edge and on the occasion that it did get dull it was very easy to sharpen. Love this knife and wouldn't even think about getting anything else.
I've had mine since mid 90s some reason never would keep an edge. Swore I'd never get another Gerber. Well till I got ahold of the Propel Downrange auto.... It changed my mind.
I really do love this knife the way it looks the awsome rubber grip and the lockback style .lockbacks are stronger than linerlocks.if you asked me if theres anything I would change about this knife I would say it needs metal liners inside the handle like the Metrolius knife, and a steel nub for one handed opening plus a lanyard hole at the backend. also we need a less easy to bend clip point tip. and some jimping on the back would be nice. this is still my favorite folding knife in the world !!! thanks GERBER!
I bought my knife ca 2001. Still have it, still works as good as it ever did. A Gerber knife will last forever if you treat it well.
Thank you for a great product!
Ive had mine since 1998 and its still my favorite knife.
Bought one for my wife she had one year's ago and lost it she was so happy she thought they stopped making this model I think she loves it more than she love's me lol
Have used this knife for general outdoor activities, field dressing, and butchering. It does exactly what a knife is supposed to do. It cuts things efficiently. Needs ocassional sharpening, like a knife usually does. Super comfortable handle.
Best knife ever for survival or edc i built a survival kit for my every day carry with the folding gator knife
I bought my gator in the early 90's and have worn/used it every day since. This has got to be the best designed, well built knife in the business. someone who uses a knife must have designed the handle because it is the perfect design. The bade is strong and easily takes an edge. For the use (and abuse and misuse) I give my gator, it stays sharp much longer than it should. Best knife you could ever have on your side.
Worst piece of junk I have ever owned. Would not take or keep an edge. Gave it away.
Bought this knife 15+ years ago and have used it for a variety of tasks. This last weekend I used it to break down and skin a whole elk. My Dad was extremely impressed that I never had to sharpen it throughout the entire process and now he wants one! The grip is amazingly comfortable and grips well even with cold, wet, slimy hands. Easy to sharpen and holds a great edge. I love this knife and might just buy myself a second one when I buy one for my Dad! Get this knife, you won't be sorry.
The Gator is in my opinion the best looking and highest quality knife that Gerber still makes. And I'm glad to see it's still made in the USA (which is where Gerber use to make all their knives). My only concern has always been with the unique placement of the lockback release, which when using the knife sits right underneath your palm. I always think it may release the blade if enough pressure were put there and because of this I am really more careful about using compared to other lockbacks. Still a very nice knife to own.
Great knives, had mine for about 14 years . I carry it every day. Like the Old man that was asked if he had his knife. He stated "I got my pants on don't I ?" Great steel (650) blade, holds a great edge, handle very sturdy. The only wear mine shows is were my Rottweiler got hold of it and chewed a piece off the butt of the handle that hasn't seemed to affect it at all. Oh yes add the fact that it's American made and it gets no better.
I got my knife back in the mid 90's and still have it. One of the best handle out there, very comfortable, well design.
Bought mine in 96 from the exchange, awesome folder, carried it in the Navy and then in the Army and I still love it to this day. Keeps an edge quite well, easy to sharpen, rugged design made it perfect out on deck.
Well les get to the first thing I love this knife my awesome dad gave it to me for Christmas
And I love it came super sharp gerber out did them selves love this knife I only had it for about to years and I only have had this knife
For about two years . I only wish it had I thumb stud
Thanks u gerber
I bought one of these when I worked on a geo-technical drill rig. The grips is amaxing, especially when your hands are covered with drilling mud. It handled every task I threw it's, from cutting 3/4" sisal rope to cutting open countless bags of bentonite and cement...wonderful knife....until someone stole it. I just hope they got as much use out of it as I did!
In the short time I've had this knife, it has served me well. It has a permanent place on my belt. At my job, my hands are constantly covered in grease and oil but, I never have to worry when I draw this tool. It has a sturdy structure for prying and a keen blade for piercing and slicing through near anything you need it to. As a person who uses this knife daily for difficult tasks on the job and simple projects in every day life, I would recommend this knife to anyone who is seeking a reliable tool.
Bought this knife when it first came out in 1991. Great knife, the grip is awesome. First time I used it was to field dress a Whitetail Deer I had taken. Made haste of that job. Never lost grip of the knife either. The quality of Stainless Steel is superb. I was really impressed with the sheath as well. Easy to get out, and back in.
Had one when I was in Boy Scouts in the 90's and still using it today as a Boy Scout Leader and just ordered a new one for my son!!!!
My dad gave me this knife to fit my needs, I love this knife. The grip is amazing ex specially for wet hands and I love the blade lock. I also love that it's made in usa so it's good quality made and I like there is no pocket clip so no one will see it and it fits in your purse, pocket, jacket anything.
My dad got me this knife for Christmas 6 years ago. He was a man who knew his knives and knowing how I love mine, he could not have picked a better knife. I love everything about it. It is as practical for everyday use as it is for all manner of work and tasks out and about in the field and on the ranch. Holds its edge, sharpens well. Only thing I want on it is a thumb stud for one-handed opening. I'm proud to own this knife.
I was given this knife as a gift in 1991 by my wife it has never left my right hip. Unfortunately after 20 some years my sheath is about wore out and need a new one. Does Gerber sell a replacement sheath. :(
I have had one since 1995. I have bought a lot of other knives since, but none have taken the place of the Gator.
I first purchased this Gerber Gator while I was an Infantryman in the U.S. Army in 1997. It went with me on every field training mission then every combat deployment. Now as a civilian, it goes with me on every hunting trip. I've field dressed more white tailed deer than I can count. Hands down the best folder I've ever encountered. All I do is sharpen and clean when needed. And the blade holds an edge better than I would have dreamed, especially for the price.
I've had this knife since its release in 1991. Its the first knife I ever bought and it has never let me down. It was first a camping and every day knife. I later became a mechanic and kept it in my tool box. I'm sure it kept me from loosing grip and prevented me from cutting myself in some greasy situations.
I have had my Gator 680 since I was a Boy Scout, this knife has been in my pocket for 20 years now and has never ever let me down.
put more pics up please
I bought this is 1993. Never failed me. Recently I locked my keys in my truck and used this to help me get in. The point is, it's an amazing knife, tough and sharp.
Hands down the best knife ever never leave home without it started carrrying one in the army in 99 had one ever since
I have had this knife since 1994 and have put it through VERY ROUGH use. It has been on my hip during Marine Corps Service, Army Service, and civilian life. I have thrown everything imaginable at this knife with absolutely NO issues. I've pried, chopped, thrown, stabbed, cut, whittled, battaned, gutted, skinned, and even hacked my way through a few strands of concertina/barbed wire with it. It's handled the abuse of desert, salt water, extreme heat and cold conditions, camping, survival, and everyday use perfectly. The Gator Grip handle still has the same feel as it did when new. The blade and locking mechanism are still as tight as when new also. It holds an AMAZING edge with regular honing. Even the nylon sheath took about 6 years to finally wear through. A few drops of CLP (oil) and a sharpening stone has been all this knife ever needed. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and if I ever have to replace mine (doubtful), I will do so with the exact same model. Lock back, clip point, fine edge (Non Serrated). Thank you Gerber for an outstanding product!
GREAT KNIFE! I have had mine for about a year and has never let me down! Great product!!
Bought this knife new in 1991 and still have it in new condition with sheath....this thing is rock solid!
Purchased back in 2006, its been misused, abused and its still a fabulous knife. Bear Grylls used this on his show Man vs. Wild during seasons 1 and 2 when Bear had no corporate sponsorship whatsoever. Of all the knife brands & models out there, Grylls chose this. WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU.
My USA-made Gator 650 has been on my belt since 1994 through camping, fishing, hunting, ranching, and four different jobs. All I've ever had to do is sharpen and oil it. I've probably given a dozen Gators to friends as gifts over the last 20 years. Hands-down my favorite knife.
amazing knife, used it for bear hunting and it didn't let me down ever
I've had this knive for 2years never lets me down great quality handle is comfy (if that's a word) sharp and ready to go
Gerber gator 650 has been on my hip for over 15 years. It has been beaten up in every which possible direction. To my amazement each time, it keeps doing what it does best. My only dismay is that the knives are now being made in china forcing me to consider buying a newer used one made in USA.
I got one while deployed in 1997. It's been resharpened a few times, but is still completely functional and a great tool in the field. Nice work.
Grandpa sadly passed last April and just found a box addressed to me while cleaning out some of his stuff. This had to have been his favorite knife, so now its mine.
THIS OR METOLIUS
PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE ON ACTUAL QUALITY NOT LOOKS
have been buying gerbers for years, and have had this one since 1990. has been on several deployments and when i say that it has been used, i mean it has been USED! read 'abused'. and it has still help up like a champ in saltwater environments and some of the worst abuse i could possibly think to throw at it. great job gerber, will write back when and if it finally fails :)
I have owned my gator grip since they came out very good knife. It has take quit a beating and stood up to it
i have carried carried one of these knives ever since being introduced to them while i was in the military. they are that dependable gone through a few of them but always have had one
this is the knife that can take a beating and not worry about it this is the best perfect folding knife ever
Best knife ever! The grip is so natural that it feels like an extension to my arm. It's the best knife I own and has lasted many years. When it's worn, it picks up an edge in a snap.
Have used this knife for two years now. It has held up to everything i've thrown at it, and everything it's been thrown at. The handle stays nice in cold weather, and grippy when wet. Not too large, but always large enough to accomplish the task at hand. My favourite knife.
Had this knife for fifteen years, it sparked my interest in knives. Best knife I own, and i own a lot! Incredably strong, and even when kept in my tackle box it does not rust. I would recomend this knife to anyone who needs a durable, reliable knife, oh and that grip is hands down the best
This is a great knife and an all-time favorite of mine. I have had one stolen in Ft Campbell. Recently after viewing Bear Grylls use one in the first season of Man vs Wild, I decided to buy one. And to replace te one I lost. Along comes my 12-year old son, who decides to claim it for himself. :) I decided to give it to him and I went ahead and ordered a Gator 2, which is a nice improvement on the Gator 1.
i have owned this knife all my life have had many stolen from me dropped one in a lake and continue to buy this knife it is the best knife i have ever owned the edge dulls easy but takes litterally 5 min to get it back razor sharp if you know how to sharpen a knife this knife is quite litterally in my very own oppionion the best knife anyone could ever have thanks for the memories gerber i will continue buy these knives for myself and all those i love
i have gator model
is very good knife
I have an older Model 650. It's agreat kinfe, however, it doesn't hold an edge well. The up side of that is that it takes an edge easily.
I wish this exact handle was on a fixed blade. The handle is perfect.
I have had a gator since 1997 still using the same one today almost everyday use it holds an edge great and is the best knife i have ever owned.
best nife i have ever got i recomend to any one
my dad has used these knives for years and now i do i have a new one thats always on my hip and one of his old ones thats 12 yeas old now and its still extremely shap and it was his work knife that has seen a lot of abuse the only reason i dont carry it is because some chemicals have spiiled on the handle ruining the rubber grip the blade and grip under the rubber a still perfect
