An all-purpose tactical knife needs to feel familiar and capable, like a well-worn tool, yet still offer quick action and hold up to long-term use. Drawing on critical feedback from military and law enforcement personnel plus its decades of knife design experience, Gerber set out to design a full-size, assisted-opening knife that’s as easy to handle and carry as it is durable and capable. The Gerber Propel AO knife is this knife. It’s a full-size tactical knife with a slim handle profile that fits comfortably in your pocket and hand.
BUILT TO LAST
A tactical knife is sure to see a variety of uses, so Gerber uses 420 high-carbon steel to give you a dependable edge. Add a G-10 composite handle and you’ve got an incredibly durable knife. Additionally, the Propel AO features a safer deployment than that of most AO knives. In deploying the blade of a typical Assisted Open knife, users simply apply pressure to the ambidextrous thumb stud. However, in the case of the Propel AO, instead of applying pressure upwards and parallel to the knife’s case, the blade will deploy when engaged at about 45 degrees to the side. This, along with the knife’s narrow aperture of blade access, ensures the blade doesn’t deploy accidentally while being pulled with speed from the pocket. Once the blade is engaged it can be locked into place during use. The tanto-style blade’s black oxide coating adds a stealth element, while its partial serration adds all-purpose utility for working through stubborn materials like nylon rope and thick plastic.
Personal preference dictates how you carry your knife, so Gerber designed the Propel AO with a three-way adjustable clip to customize the knife’s orientation in your pocket or on your belt. You can set it for tip-up or tip-down storage and left-hand or right-hand bias
COMFORTABLE, DISCREET CARRY
To deserve daily use status, a utilitarian knife like the Propel AO needs to feel good in your hand and in your pocket. The composite G-10 handle’s textured surface optimizes grip security in all conditions and maintains a slim profile that complements the knife’s balanced feel, while the reliable plunge lock and safety switch secure the blade where you want it, be it open or stowed in your pocket. But most importantly, you get a full-size tactical knife that carries discreetly and comfortably, on the job and off.

I bought this knife less than a year ago and so far it has been the best everyday carry knife I've ever owned. The one downside is that I don't get to carry it at work so it hasn't been used a whole lot. But so far I do love this knife.
The pocket clip is a Torx #6 bit. found with most eyeglass repair kits, but not very common. Very small and easily damaged.
Very interesting knife, great quality, slim and strong. AO opening takes practice but is very fast and easy with a bit of practice. PAY ATTENTION, thumb lock and safety features need to be fully engaged and handled firmly or you'll get cut. As always, USA Gerber quality.
The Gerber Propel AO is a knife that not only met my expectations, but surpassed them! If I could describe this knife in 1 word... TOUGHLY-AWESOME! Yes that is one word :)
would be Gerber's best knife of all time if it had a drop point blade like the Gerber instant
worst locking mechanism ever. even when locked it can still come open. cut my hand twice while reaching into my pocket.
Opening is a trick, but as said before, once you get it, it pops right open.
I recently bought a gerber propel ao and i to had problems opening it i was so disappointed with the products.
I got this knife by mistake, I wanted the auto version instead. But, I must say I have been very happy with this knife, that is after I tightened every single screw on it. They were all very loose from the factory. I will probably be getting the auto opening knife just because I can.
To answer Engineer's review, I too had difficulty opening the knife. However I found when flicking my thumb towards the 10 o'clock position on the thumb stud it flicked open perfectly. however if it was the 9 o'clock or the 11 o'clock it stayed put. It's a strange open, unlike any other blade I've owned. But once you know how to do it, but really is smooth and opens very fast.
I purchased the tactical AO thru GearGear website. I received it today and the knife would not open and the only way it was opened was by using both hands. I called the company and now I have to wait on a return box. I wonder if they inspect their products.
is it assisted opening
Looks good so I ordered one. The order has been on hold for the a month. Are you every going to make these? Or just say coming soon indefinitely?
looks nice, cant wait for it to be available.
As the title says, I'd love to see this knife exactly as is but with a drop point blade instead of tanto.
In response to Backpacker, I'd be very glad if Gerber was making a push to move back to the USA. Based on their marketing, promotional information, and products over the last year and a half, it appears they are definitely making a push for higher quality and to possibly move back to US production. Here's hoping!
Finally! I hope Gerber is going back to manufacturing in the US rather than the cheap labor in China... I may go back to Gerber again for knives.
This knife looks amazing and I cant wait to get it. I love how the blade looks and the assisted opening is always helpful
