The tool itself is quite handy, but not having the sheath either Alice, Malice or Molle Compatible, it is Very awkward for easy carry. Are the clips/straps that expensive? The upper belt loop is fine for someone that only wears a skinny belt. Gerber can do better.

Right out of the box this seemed like a pretty badass blade. Though the second time I used it was on an overnight hike - I went out to chop up some branches for kindling and after a while i noticed it became gradually harder to get through the branches. I quit swinging for a second and to my surprise the blade was bent back in multiple spots. I don't know what you made this out of but it certainly does not belong on a machete.

Bought For the wife's B.O.B. gear and the belt loop on the sheath pulled out at it's top seam before we could get it outside! This rendered the sheath useless for belt use. We have since taken the Jr. out for testing and found it to be a perfect match for the wife. Makes quick work of 3/4 to 1 1/2 material used for shelter or fire. 4 Stars for the Machete, Goose egg for the Sheath.

  • |BY: Paul Dodd , great blade

Just bout this. I have always been impressed with Gerber blades. This one lives up to the name. The high carbon steel blade was excellent for cutting light brush. It could have had a better edge. The edge was sharp but rough. Not a major issue for an inexpensive machete. Dinged the blade some when I encountered bricks where I didn't expect them. Re-sharpened the blade with a Lansky sharpening kit and really had to work at it. The steel on this machete is very good quality and somewhat difficult to sharpen. That is good as I won't have to sharpen it often as long as I don't hit bricks or rocks. I would definitely recommend this blade. Great job!

I've been reading a lot of the reviews and for all the people that have broken or damaged your machete, sounds like you people are trying to cut trees down or split wood with. Machetes are not made for that kind of work its for small branches and clearing a path when in the woods. Also sounds like some don't have a clue on how to sharpen a blade. I've been using mine all spring and summer this machete is a machine and works great. People quit trying to cut down trees and strike at the proper angle of the branch don't strike straight into it, easier cut and less stress on the blade

Just purchased this "machete" yesterday and decided that I would try it out today. Was cutting of a few twigs and small 1/2" branches on the side of the house. Sharp blade cut right thru several, then I hit a small knot and blade bed right over. This is suppose to be " high" carbon steel, just not right.

  • |BY: wt , alright

its a good blade don't get me wrong but it could use a few improvements, #1 this a machete not a knife, it needs to be thicker and full tang (my tang started to rattle after the first week) #2 handle could be built better, its just cheap plastic with rubber. #3 the blade does not need to be flat it needs more bulk in the core of the blade.

Received as a gift to replace my 20 year old Ontario Knife machete. Liked the rubber grip and ligher weight. Went out and needed to clear some brush to be able to cut some trees. The blade not only bent on the first 25 whacks, but also chipped. I finshed the job with the saw. I sent the machete back for warranty claim and went back to using my Ontario Knife which is in better shape after 20 years than the Gator Jr after 25 whacks. Very disappointed in the thin, weak blade.

Worked Great! While the blade lasted.Cut through small branches with ease, light and easy to use good rubber handle. I used the saw on a small fallen tree about 6" around and it cut through nicely. THE BAD As i was clearing the blade started to bend and continued to get worse, but i kept using it for my trail needed to be cleared and it kept working just with less efficiency lol

  • |BY: Dean , Prospector

I thought this machete would be a good fit for prospecting as it is a short sword, light weight and has a saw.

In less than 1 month in the Oregon mountains hacking and slashing trails into very hard places to get to, the blade totally failed.

The steel used is inferior to the Gerber brand and needs to be up graded. The grip needs finger groves to enhance grip as the lanyard is not enough. The sheath also failed as the Velcro strap no longer secured the machete in the sheath.

Overall, this product might have a place in home and garden, but not in the field where every tool needs to perform without issue.

well first of all its a machete....not an axe or hatchet.....you use it to cut saplings or trees no bigger than 1 quarter in diameter.....and you cut small bushes and weeds.......you dont try to cut big ass trees or anything like that and mine came razor sharp

Don't let any of these reviews put you off, this is a serious machete and I've put it through the paces clearing mountain ash and alder much larger diameter than "a nickel". I've used to limb pine and cotton wood with branches that I thought I'd need an axe for. It packs in my winter pack so I can clear out branches for backcountry jump approaches and weighs next to nothing. I also have the full size Gator Machete but prefer the versatile size with a wallop that this guy delivers. And for all survivalist types you can rig a shoulder harness out of two shoelaces that is easily covered with a regular fitting hoody or shirt.

  • |BY: Disappointed In Gerber , A guy

Well I got this "machete" and it was dull as a stone....so I sharpened it up....took it out just to test it and after cutting through just a couple green thin branches the blade has a dent in it! I have a 8 dollar machete from harbor freight that has the same blade thickness and has not dented yet. So your buying a cheap machete and a decent sheath...I'm tired of my gerber items breaking or getting messed up during normal use and I won't buy them anymore..I don't suggest anyone else doing so either! It's all made in china anyways! I only gave it one star because I had to out something but it gets no stars in my book!

  • |BY: aric , My Favorite Machete

I own both this and the full length version. Although I like the full length, because of its usefulness on vines and such, it tends to blade tends to bend/wobble during use on heavier saplings and brush. With this shorter machete I am able to cut away while tangled in heavy brush due to its compact design. Again, due to the more compact design, I can cut down much larger trees. Yes I meant to type "trees" this time rather than saplings. I have been trudging through the thick woods of Northeast Georgia for 24 years, so I have a bit of experience with a machete, but no man, experienced or not, should be able to cut down a tree 1ft+ thick in 15-30 minutes with a miniature machete! With the full-length, and the compact on my belt, there is nothing I can't handle in the Georgia mountains; be it thick muscadine vines, or full size trees.

First time love the weight, saw handle, cut small pecan trees to help make camp... worked better than great. Second time some of the guys had trouble hatcheting thru a little 4" dried branch, I used my Gator JR machete and cut thru. Totally destroyed the blade, not recovery.

ok this machete is amazing its easy to sharpen and is quite good at splitting small pieces of wood. i can cut trees down with it pretty easily. so one day my ass of a neighbor takes it from my backyard (i was splitting wood the day before) and he takes it and smashes the blade on a rock and is now dented in opposite ways right in the middle of the blade. i guess you can say we are no longer neighbors

I got this when I wanted the Bear Grylls Parang but they didn't have it at Wal Mart or Sportsman's Warehouse, and I was not disappointed with it. I tried to make a trail through a bunch of stickerbushes with an old crummy $10 machete and got two feet in a couple hours, but with this bad boy I got to half the length of my house in the same amount of time! The saw is good for getting through thick tree branches or scotch broom that are too big for the blade to get through. Over all, awesome tool.

  • |BY: M C , Gerber, I'm tired of you

I'm tired of your cheap mystery steels that don't hold an edge, terrible heat treat (if any, you don't list it!) and bad designs! You really have nothing on the competition, price, or quality-wise!

I looked at this machete and from the get-go was suspicious of the mystery "high carbon steel" that they didn't want to tell me anything about. (I still don't know what type of steel it is!) it could be 440HC or VG-10, complete opposites that could be described as "high carbon", but I just refuse to believe it was anything good. I assume it was junky 420 or 440HC with no heat treat because after an hour of average stress due to yard work there was a large deformation in the edge. This was also due to the poor design work because they put a VERY shallow grind for a machete which was not smart as it doesn't have to be sharp, but durable. I took great care of it and didn't abuse it but it still bent. I bought a machete from a rival brand (Idk if gerber will let me reference competitors in this review) and the heat treat was much better (gerber, improve yours!), the design was a much steeper utility edge (ehem...gerber!) and the steel was not a mystery. It was 3Cr13 that was heat treated and rust resistant making it 10x the machete this is. I am not saying that you need to buy from another brand, I am saying gerber has a lot of work to do...

The weeds kept getting hooked in the saw teeth. I needed to flick the weeds off before every slash. It’s not a big deal when doing small jobs. I don’t care for the saw on this tool.

My suggestions would be to flip the blade over, omit the saw and replace the saw with a cutting edge. It would become a sheep’s foot machete. I would buy that if I ever see one.

I took this product out of the package and immediately noticed that the blade was dull. I tried cutting a weed with the stem about half the size of a dime and the thing bounced off. I went and had to get it professionally sharpened. I used it for about 45 mins intermittently and it's dull again. Also, the saw side is horrible as well. If you want to cut down branches with the diameter of a nickel, you may be able to get away with it. Anything bigger and you may as well use your chainsaw. Deeply unhappy about my purchase. This will be my first and last purchase from this company.

Good Price, cuts well, especially the saw but not built for durability thats for sure. Used it twice and the blade is already loose. It just needs a little tightening of the screws but not meant for an avid woodsman; just a few camping trips in the year should do the trick

Point of Balance is at 0", which makes this machete suitable for throwing (but you'd have to cut off the cord on the 'pommel' or it will wrap around your hand mid-throw) but mainly it is the heft of this blade that gives it the cutting power. Didn't come sharp, though I haven't tried sharpening it yet. The saw is the best thing about it and I would even say you could use that end to greater swinging effect than an unsharpened blade edge on the other side.

In short, it's a machete that hits like an axe. Unique.

I purchased it when the grip broke on my full size machete. I will be using it for clearing light brush, and the size is ideal for the job. The weight and balance are good.

The instructions that came with it are a bit confusing. It states to use "the saw blade for branches of 1 inch in diameter or less." I think that should read "1 inch in diameter or MORE."

Docked one star for the packaging. The heat sealed plastic clamshell was bad enough, but the stupid rivet that held the blade in place ranks near the top of the worst packaging designs I have experienced.

Seriously, removing the machete from the packaging was the most dangerous thing I have ever done with a bladed tool.

I got this about, 3-4 months ago, and I love it! I have used it to chop, and saw through lilac. It is awesome! It is great if you do not want a full sized machete. And for those who don't know how much it it, it's $21.

I cut some branches off a few trees here in my back yard today, now i have four dents/deformations on the cutting edge. I am not impressed.
