Building on the success of the larger one-hand opening models, this compact version is nimble but just as tough. Built to solve for everyday snags, this tool has 12 carefully chosen components packed into an unobtrusive 7 ounce package. Built in the USA, built to last.
Gerber designs clever, adaptable knives and tools and builds them to last. With its needle nose pliers and eleven other carefully selected features, the MP400 Compact Sport belongs to the series of one-handed opening Gerber multi-tools made popular thanks to the fluid, effortless one-hand open. The MP400 Compact Sport is built in Portland, Oregon, USA.
VERSATILITY IN THE HOME AND BEYOND
Creating solutions for everyday snags, the MP400 Compact Sport maneuvers between its gadgets in a flash. Produce the partially serrated blade and tear into the thick, tricky store packaging or dig into just-delivered boxes toting the latest thrilling item ordered online. Bust out the Phillips or one of the flat head drivers for a fast tack-down of a light switch plate or rattling door handle. Crack a beer while you watch the kids play in the yard after you’ve tightened the screws on their jungle gym. Get on top of trouble spots with agility when in possession of the nimble little MP400 Compact Sport.
ADAPTS LIKE A CHAMP
This capable little stainless steel multi-tool, like several of its big brother MP600s, contains a combination serrated and fine edge blade. It holds a Phillips driver, three separate sizes of flat heads, a file, and a can and bottle opener, all of which lock in place for safe application. The MP400 beautifully incorporates its precise assortment of gear within the unobtrusive frame at just under seven tidy ounces. The slim, lean MP400 gear can live quietly in the kitchen gadgets drawer, on top of the fridge, or stowed on a shelf for easy access when need demands.
Just a note here. This is possibly my third of fourth review of this tool. I only used today twice, but it is Sunday ! I used it to clinch a knot on my fishing line swivel and also to unlatch the boat trailer safety strap. But on a normal day, it is in use 10-15 times. How do these other folks live without it? Gerber doesn't make another tool that will sit in the rear pocket of blue jeans, for the entire day, without complaint. It is your finest hour...advertise it!
Great piece of kit! Handy and well made with a great selection of tools. Blade and scissors are razor sharp. Love mine!!
Still performs like day one!
Minor issue is the sheath, didn't last a decade. Big holes at the top and bottom.
I was issued a Gerber tool back in 91 when I was in the military (Which I still have and use regularly). I also have this version also. Compared to other tools on the market, you cant bet Gerber. I highly recommend them to everyone and have given them as gifts..
Have used this tool in my job for over 12 years now. I love this tool. I am on my third nylon sheath. Not bad.
I first purchased the MP 400 while working a retail job, I had my doubts considering I'm not much of a Gerber guy. After owning an carrying this tool for the past 2 years and putting through all the abuse that comessage with my job and everyday life I quickly tossed my Leathermans aside. The scissors are fantastic and every tool seems to come in handy every day. Overall a great purchase for an EDC that can save you in a pinch!
Thanks Gerber! My previous post got out-dated...... (I guess) Today was Saturday, a slow day....I was working on the manure (cow sh*t) spreader. I used the 400 to dig manure (cow sh*t) out of the hydraulic cylinder linkage (Try advertising THAT tool!). Later I was working on the fuel line of a Farmall 460 tractor. Used the 400 to start the retainer nuts. That was just in 2 hours! In between I left the 400 in the tool box, but stopped repairs to find it. I MUST have it in my possession at all times. (it is like air- you breathe it -but when it isn't there-you miss it.) It goes in my right rear pocket every morning. (Next to a bandanna handkerchief-holds it tight!) Comes out of the jeans at night, but stays next to my bed. My wife gave me my first (Model 400) 14 years ago for our 1st anniversary. (Don Trump knows what is WRONG with America-I know what is RIGHT-we let a magnificent woman (my wife),born on a small Pacific Island, become an American citizen!!) That was approximately 10 tools ago. Some got lost, some broke and were replaced by the factory. One 400 got retired (a skinny blade) just for the memories. A model 400 will solve 90% of life's emergencies Beyond that you need either a 3 pound hammer or a pipe wrench.
Best tool I've had the pleasure to use. Comes out and expands with one hand to use when I need it fast.
My crew would feel lost without thier 400's on thier side! When they go out to look at a problem or project it is many times they use the 400 and don't even have to go back for thier tool bag!! These things rock!
The mp 400 is the best tool i have ever owned. I have used and abused this tool and it still keeps working hard. 10/10
you know the saying when all you have is a hammer everything gets treated as a nail?
well these multiplier 600 are always on my belt.they survive longer than any other i have owned.forget cheap nonames!
i can break them on demand doing the simplist of things.like loosening a nut on a bike wheel.the squeeze i have to give to get them to grip snaps the cheapies.
both the 400 and 600 hold up good to that and much worse.
my offer to betatest for gerber still stands!
Great tool. Used warranty service once since purchase when the wire cutters developed a 'click'. Repaired free and returned promptly.
This tool has been extremely useful. The Philips screwdriver broke on me though when I was trying to unscrew the visor from my car. I'm hoping Gerber will replace the broken tools. (541)214-0070 email@example.com
Quality has seemed to drop, but I still love the functionality and my muscle memory is trained to open it up in a split second! I still love it, just don't let the quality get away from you , Gerber! 10 years ago the Fiskars scissors could cut anything. Last few years the new model was not labeled "Fiskars" and would barely cut anything, including a sheet of paper... would fold it over! Looser joints than before so wire cutter won't cut wire! Screwdrivers not as durable. Broke them a couple times now. I do have to say the customer service is flawless and the guarantee is upheld to the highest degree.
This is an amazing tool I personally have 4 of these the thing I like best is if it breaks send it to Gerber and they will send you one back 100 % warranty guarantee for Free don't worry about being hard on it.
my wife bought mine at christmas in 95 still use it and cant live without it carry every day thanks gerber
The best multitool hands down for me. So quick the get to the pliers or any tool for that matter. Hope they keep this one around
LOVE IT!! Had mine for over 10 yrs and NEVER had a problem! I have the Compact Sport Multi-Plier 400 Stainless. I have used this at work, straned car repairs, and even when I break something at friends houses. I can't imagine life without it, and the size is perfect, small, yet still easily handable.
I just bought it about two weeks ago and for the most part I am very pleased. It has come in handy a lot already. All of the tools are very useful. I noticed though it seemed to have tiny scratches all over when you shine it in the light, so I keep it lubed and they have not progressed nor rusted. I guess you get your moneys worth.
Just wanted to say while I have 2 Gerber 1 Leatherman and 1 SOG multi tools and they all have their own propose. the head broke off of this one's older model it sat in a box for years then I read that they have a life time warranty sent in my old one and got this new version after a week. No fighting no muss no fuss that is worth alot. Thanks warranty department.
love my 400 multi tool have been using since early 2000. use it every day, the sheath did wear thru but when used daily this is to be expected. it has more tape than case right now.Have just sent the tool in to Gerber for a new blade ( broke) and sheath. also to get the scissors sharpened and the jaw cutter sharpened will advise on the warranty side when it returns. Great product, i actually bought a diesel multiplier while my 400 is out to warranty. the new tool is a little stiff but it is new so hopefully this will loosen up.
Often heard around my house is, "Where is my Gerber??" Everyone uses it. It's always needed. The most valuable tool in my toolbox.
I love mine so much I bought the larger version of it so that I could have two.
hi, This Gerber 400 is what I need. It fit my requirement. Yours may varies. since it is light I carry it every day. It help me much at work, so I don't need to carry my tool back around the building. It also help me during fishing, with one hand operation I can deploy the pliers and pull out the hook and the other hand is holding fish.
The scissors is very sharp, it can cut braided fishing line which most scissors have failed. for me it only lack a file.
Contracted in Iraq for almost 4 years with this device. It was standard issue from the company. In 30 years of doing aircraft maintenance was never allowed to use tools other then those from our boxes until I worked for this particular company. As long as it was etched with our PID it wasn't considered a FOD hazard.
I lost track how many times I used this thing! It was always there in a pinch. The scissors were practically worthless but every other aspect of the tool met all my needs. Keep it dry-it does corroded easily.
My wife (girlfriend at the time) bought me my MP400 14 years ago! i have used it for everything you can think of! I even take it saltwater fishing. I have tired the other brands on the market and nothing compares to my Gerber's!!!!
I Finally broke the blade today ;( i'm hoping i can have it repaired but, looking at the site it looks like they have changed the blade design so i am hoping that they can still repair it.
I've had this product for about 2 years and I'm very disappointed with it. It's hard to use because you have to open it up to reach any of the tools which is just bad design. Also the steel must be low quality because it doesn't hold an edge. And the most surprising and disappointing part is that the last time I took it out to use it I noticed several rust spots that are spreading across the tool. It's supposed to be stainless steel! It's printed on the knife! This is just ridiculous. I can't speak for their other multitool a but after this I'd go with a different brand all together.
As I work on the assembly line at the No.1 bus builder in the world you can only imagine how many times my (compact sport) Gerber is in and out of the sheath in a day's time and added to that as I live on a farm my Gerber's job doesn't end when I come home from my job. This tool lives with me 7 days a week. I am completely lost without it. The scissors on this tool are amazing. The sheath wore out years ago and I ended up with a sheath from another brand and that's worn out too (too many times in and out I guess).
Just got this multitool since I saw a co worker with one who uses it quite often. Love all the features, especially the one handed pliers! Just one question. Why is the knife finger nail slot on the inboard side and not where the notch in machined out on the handle?
I have had this tool on my hip practically every day for the past 15 years. I originally had a 600 Blunt-nose w/bit sheath in 1993. On a machine installation in Japan back in 1998, the customer's maintenance supervisor flipped over how often I used the tool to complete my job. I ended up giving it to him before I left. (Customer relations) I replaced it when I got home with a 400. Has been on my side ever since. I have received Leathermans and SOGs as gifts and there is no comparison. I gave them away and kept my Gerber. I feel naked without it. The few times I have not had it with me, I have needed it. I use it on a daily basis. If I had to pick the BEST feature, it would have to be the Fiskars scissors. After 15yrs (Never sharpened)they are still the best. I have zero complaints about any piece of this awesome tool. The case however, I'm on my third one.
I have Leathermans, SOGs and various other multitools that have been found/given to me over the years. They remain in my "backup" pile, because none of them have ever matched up to "my Gerber". I have been wearing one (compact sport) on my hip for about 20 years now and feel naked without it. Absolutely the most essential tool in my massive inventory of tools. Thanks Gerber!!
I've owned nothing but this Gerber tool for years. Unfortunately I lost mine in the Yellowstone River last summer and immediately bought the exact replacement at a local retail store for an affordable price. I recently broke the tip of the needle nose and am sending it back to be fixed. If Gerber's warranty is as good as this tool I will be one happy camper. I will follow up w/an update as soon as I receive my tool back from Gerber.
Thank You Gerber for quality products and excellent service.
I use this tool for 3 years and always on my belt , and it never let me down, its great tool for light to medium duty. From open milk can to do some minor repair on my motorcycle. Thanks Gerber. From Gerber user in Indonesia, SE Asia
I have owned three Gerber multi-tools over the last 10 or 12 years. I practically carry everywhere I go. I believe the Gerber MT to be superior to others in the market.
That being said, I have one complaint. The sheaths do not hold up.
Within only a few months I find that the fabric sheaths tend to come apart.
I picked this tool for my 5 year gift and I had it for over ten years and it failed I contacted gerber and they gave me a brand new one plus 2 sheaves I love this tool and company they stand behind what they sell
I've got 3 of these right now, 1 of the original "skinny" blades and 2 of the more recent blades. (Those skinny blades broke but they got a wicked sharp edge!) I carry one every day I have jeans on. (got one of those little Bear Grylls tools for the office) I probably average 10 uses of this tool a day-figure a reasonable range of 50 to 0 with the curve weighted a little heavier at the beginning.
As a company, Gerber has my sympathy. They've had their "finest hour" when they made this tool. The future of improvements is dim... maybe go back to the skinny blade and add a small file somewhere. Thanks Gerber.
no hardwire cutter is really a mess, i can't cut a 2mm steel which other brand mini-tool can do easily. love the fiskars scissors, the best scissors in multi-tool
I didn't own one before I tried it...You should do the same! This tool is fast-opening (with one hand) and is made with quality that you can actually FEEL...Costs less than the "other company" multi-tool...Compare for yourself and make your own decision...Oh, and the nylon sheath may last longer than the silly leather-type!
Bought the previous version of this knife when I was 16 and teaching sailing. Even after two summers on the water and an admittedly terrible maintenance routine (spray with fresh water sometimes, done) it only had one or two minor spots of surface rust. Other than that my only complaint had been the thin knife which was sharp but made me nervous about cutting something with force behind it. Unfortunately that tool was snagged by a coworker a few weeks ago and disappeared with him.
Just got the new version pictured above in the mail today and I already love it even more than my old one. The sliding pliers feel solid and have a smooth action and the knife is infinitely improved with double the thickness and a forward lean. Even the sheath is nicer with a kind of double nylon with a hard backing. The old sheath was a simple nylon pouch and even after a huge amount of abuse wouldn't tear, so I'm pretty confident this new one should last much longer!
Although other brands have "more" features this one has everything you'd need for handyman stuff and daily use. I carried my old one on my belt for 9 years and found a use for it nearly every day at home or work.
Blade broke on mine and the wire cutter was extremely dull! Tool was replaced and equipped with the new sheath and sent back to me pretty quickly. Great warrantee. Thanks a lot Gerber for the great service. Just for the great service I went out and bought the Instant. Haven't had it long but so far it's a pretty good knife.
I've had this tool since 2002.Love it.Would not go to the woods without it.Still functions like new.I periodicly clean and oil.Great one handed opening to remove hook from bass.I need a new sheath but no biggie.Would buy another one if something happened to this one.
Blade broken, tool replaced completely including new sheath. Only drawback is that the new model comes with a shorter blade that is more difficult to extract. But I appreciate the service and the quality of the tool.
This is a decent multi-tool. Does not have as many tools are some of the bigger ones but this one does have some useful tools(some, not many but maybe one or two)
Keeping rust from spreading the the tool though is an ongoing battle. The knife on it is quite useless and keeping the serrations sharp are a pain. The tool would benefit from have a serrated and a fine blade. The scissors are also worthless due to their size.
Over all, not a great tool for the money. Quality of this Gerber is good but do yourself a favor, keep using Gerber...just not this one.
I have had one of these for more than a decade. I picked it up around 2001 when I was starting up in the Civil Air Patrol. I carried it every where then, always on my belt. It is the single most useful tool in my kit today. For a long time, my tool box consisted only of this, a hammer and a pair of phillips screwdrivers I used for PC repair. Leatherman's were all the rage when I went multitool shopping for the first time. A friend recommended Gerber and I have never regretted the purchase. When it finally breaks some day, I will replace it with another Gerber multitool.
I wore out 2 Bull-nose before I switched to the Compact. I have worn out 2 of these (one during my deployment to Iraq in 2006) and my 3rd one has a broken scissor spring now but I LOVE THIS THING. I call them my metal fingers and I keep mine on my belt everyday. It looks a little funny when I dress up for special occasions but I have never regretted having it with me. Never leave home without it. I need a new one, come on Santa!
This is by far one of the best tools I've ever owned. Had it since 2004 when I was in the US Army, where I used it almost daily; until recently one of the plier ends broke off when I used it on my car.
Sent it into Gerber, since it has a lifetime warranty. Gerber refurbished it like new and sent it back all within 2 weeks. Top notch service!
Owned for 8yrs now and couldn't be happier with it.
The only thing that ever happened is the scissors got a little loose with time and use.
I would note for anyone interested it is a light weight tool i work in a light industrial environment and it suits me fine if you need something beefy you might want to look at a larger version.
This was my multi-tool I used while Scouting in Wisconsin. Didn't keep me from getting my Eagle at all.
I had the multi sport for 8 years when the main blade broke. I always loved it and it got heavy use. I contacted gerber who replaced the blade and other parts for free. Also giving me the new updated case.
I had these for years before I met my wife 12 years ago, so probably 15 years or more now. I dont know what to do without them.
Around the house, in the garage, in the woods, even kept me from getting stranded by a corroded battery cable once.
Even my wife uses them all the time when we are working around the house.
Absolutely wonderful !!
Amazıng Product had mıne for over 12 years! Need a new sheath and the blade needs sharpenıng but ı use ıt everyday!
I had the knife for about 6 years of just around the house usage. I was disappointed when the main blade snapped at the base white trimming a Christmas tree. Multiplier 400 m. Guess I'll buy a SOG
Best tool I ever had it got me out of a tough spot more than once. The one hand opening made it easy to use even when my hands were full. My wife lost it on me while we were fishing about three weeks ago. She said she would get me a new one for Christmas…but I don’t know if I can wait that long. I find myself reaching for it on my hip only it’s not there.
This was bought as a replacement as my original one was lost after many years. The main blade on the unit I received does not match the picture. Because of its shorter length and contour, the blade is difficult to open. The pliers do not open with a one hand operation. The nylon sheath is oversize. I am very disappointed in how this current product has changed from my original one.
I love the sharpness of the knife, I love the one handed opening. I love the versatility of this tool. I'm sure there are better quality tools out there but for the price you could do a LOT worse. I would recommend to someone wanting a DIY/camping multitool.
Lasted for 13 years, priceless 1-handed open for pliers, quality sheath/pouch also lasted 13 years. Locking blade/tools make for safe use.
Excellent tool, had iteh "tecnician" black version for about 7 years, I love it, durable and compact.
Best Multi tool I ever bought worked great till the airlines lost it for me now im sure its working great for someone else.
i have had the Multi-plier 400 for 10 years. I use it almost daily and try not to leave home without it.
I've had this tool for many years. Working as a roadie and on stage it has been a lifesaver many many times. If I'd ever buy a new one it would be because I want it in black!
I have had this tool for over 10 years. It has served me thru multiple jobs and in tons of situations. Now it sees use in maintaining multiple guitars and looks as good as it did the day I bought it. Excellent tool!
As an IT in the military, having the right gear for the right job is crucial to mission success. The CS-400 has been the best and most crucial tool in my set for a long time. I would recommend it to anyone who is constantly on the go.
I had one for over 10 years and just lost it. I've had some other brands but this one was the best. I'm going to get another one.
Had this tool bought for me when I joined the British army 10 years ago and still have it now... I have had 3 sheaths though...dwarves me well in Afghan, Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia and Serria Leon plus hundreds of exercises around the world!!!
Needed a compact needle-nose to walk the banks with. This is perfect due to one hand opening with a fish in other hand, All tools are solid, knife is super sharp, scissors are top notch, love it. Everything locks so it's safe. I just recommend this tool to friends looking for a gift for their son.
I've had this knife for probably 20 years. The excellent nylon sheath is wearing out, but the tool itself hardly looks or feels used at all. It's a perfect compromise between weight, toughness, and versatility. All the tools are very well designed. Lock-up is rock solid, even after twenty years.
I got this multi-tool when I was 10 and in the Boy Scouts. Now I'm 22 and the knife and scissors are still as sharp as they were when I first bought it. I love this thing and it really is built for life.
this is the best multi-tool i have ever laid hands on it has such a good design and the locks on it are very reliable I would recromend this knife to anyone- thanks gerber!!
Been using it for over 10 years now, best one I've ever used. Always with me and used daily. Feel naked without it. Love the one handed opening and the grip with the tools on the inside is more comfortable than others. Worth it's weight in gold.
Like Paul and Jeremiah I have broken the blade and want it repaired. I have got the knife apart so how do I get hold of the replacement part without sending the knife on a journey of a life time. If you cannot make arrangement s to have them repaired in the UK you shouldn't sell them here.I resent having to buy a whole new multi tool. who really cares about the life time warranty. What is the liability of sending a blade it came over in the first place? The wire cutter could be made of sterner stuff. You obviously have a lot of blades that meet an early demise. I have had a few of these kind of knives and still use the one without the blade!!! With the continuous work it gets, the sheath has worn out . Is that in the warranty as well? Do the stars mean for service or for quality I'm rating it for ease of repair.
Like Paul said, I also snapped the knife blade off and was here poking around to find out about the lifetime warranty.
A fantastic Multi-Plier unfortunately I broke the blade. Is it true there is a life time warranty on it? My friend told me about this warranty, so I thought I'd find out firs hand.
Does it have a Life time warranty?
So when i was 10 years old i saved up what would of been alot of money and bought this knife. Im now 16 and this is still my favorite knife, and is always coming in handy. This tool goes everywhere with me, hiking, fishing, kayaking, or work and its never
Bought mine 11 years ago before traveling to Africa. Didn't know it was top choice tool in Africa. Initiation was removing a wood parquet floor glued to concrete no other tool could get the glue off but the blade in my Gerber (a blend of 400 & 600). Blade
My father gave me this about 8-9 years ago. I use this quite often, and sometimes even for medium sized jobs. I had to get a new sheath for it a year or so go... but the tool itself is still working hard. Very tough, very durable very great piece of equip
