Tip is too weak and the lock up has up/down/side2side blade play right out of the packaging. Not a secure lock for any type of use. Buyer beware!

Great knife for the price! I own a few other Gerber's, but this my 'everyday knife'. And I love it to death strong and sturdy, great size and just love having it around. Bald holds its edge pretty well. But nothing a wet stone can't fix

I purchased this knife for only $15 due to missing box and I started using it for work, and it proves to be fairly durable, I work in aluminum fabrication, its been dropped, used to cut cardboard, deburr aluminum, cut rags, I have sharped it with sandpaper and a actual sharpener, and the finish is rather durable only finish missing is the corners that hang out my back pocket, ive washed it in degreaser to get cutting coolant off though not exposed to acetone because I'm sure it would eat the rubber right out of the grip.. so far ive gotten cut twice by it once down to the tendon in my finger.. my only complaint is that it needs a blade lock because keeping it in my back pocket it sometimes tries to attack either my hand or my wallet when I take them in and out..

I've owned Gerber, Buck, Kershaw, and Cold Steel. All were good knives. The Gerber 45860 Air Ranger was by far my favorite. Fit my hand like it was an extension. Lost itt, sadly. Then I went through the standard replace with different brand route. It became insane cause nothing fit. Was given the Icon by a neighbor for free! I had been wanting a larger blade, tactical folder. This will definitely be my daily carry knife. The tops!

I've owned this knife for 4+ years. I have no complaints other than the clip, which broke half way through my deployment. I used to keep it on my molle, now just keep it in my pocket. Great knife, sturdy well made and the perfect size.

My first review of this knife was back on July 2012. Well here is an update. I still rock this knife after 5 years! Today I did yard work and then I took my Icon for a stroll in the woods with my dog. I used it to chop a walking stick ... YES CHOP. Then I built a little tarp lean to to beat the rain. I used my Icon to once again chop and whittle some pegs. I my last review I whined a bit about the serrations but I have to say they do add cutting power and the dig in when chopping. I am a knife collector but some how it is usually a Spyderco or a Gerber that ends up in my pocket. I made two modifications. one was brass washers and I filed the liner lock flush with the scales. I wish this knife had a thicker tip. I really dig this knife... I don't know why I just do. I wish I could post a pick to show you the wear and character it has from being a seasoned favourite tool of mine!

Great all purpose, not just tactical, pocket folder, a long intimidating blade, sawing serrations to cut tough material, and the textured handles, although did scrap up my knuckles, made a great striking surface for matches. Had no trouble with the locking mechanism.

I love this knife! It is, the best knife anyone could hope for! Not only is it ridiculously large and intimidating, its durable and easy for me to use with my over large hands. I bought this knife last year and never had a problem! Obviously it needed to be cared for, sharpened, lubricated, and cleaned just like any other tool, but this one kept its edge for the first 6 months I had it! Much to my grief I was hiking and it fell off my belt in the woods. :'( I will never buy another knife as long as this one is available. Hell, I may even stock up on them! Its that perfect!

its a decent knife holds but like all knives needs a little bit of maintenance ive had it for about a year now and at first was questionable about its construction but once it broke in i grew to love it i work outside all year long and can say that it has done me well for any situation ive found myself in all the gerber knives ive had have all lasted me about a year or 2 so ive gotten my moneys worth

This is an incredible knife for the money. Has a good weight for fighting; not so heavy it fatigues your arm, but not so light you lose control. Just remember, this is a TACTICAL KNIFE, not a survival knife. Don't try to dig or pry or anything and you'll be good. Also it isn't the easiest to deploy, the thumb stud doesn't offer much leverage. Still an incredible knife. My new EDC.

I just got this knife yesterday and I am so surprised on how great it is! When i first got it i was surprised on how big it was. the blade looks huge and is very intimidating. I got this knife just as a knife to carry with me whenever im out and about. The only thing keeping me from 5 stars is that the blade doesnt really "lock" into place when you fold it up. The blade can easily be thrown out if you use enough force, and not a lot of force is needed. but other than that its an amazing knife

  • |BY: Joe , Failed locking system

I have owned this knife for 6 months now and loved it. I liked how the blade was 4.25" long, the black coloring, and the grip of it.

But, the blade quickly became loose and would open easily which led to a couple close callswhen reaching for my knife from my pocket. The loose blade along with the large thumb grips for opening made it able for me to draw the knife, like you would and emerson, and have it open while being slide out of my pants. This was the only good part

Today while having myfriends around we were testing our different knives. It was during this time i had the blade shut on me with the serrations comming down onto my finger. It did not pierce the skin, so i did not think too much about it. I tightned up the screw for thr blade to stiffen it. I attempted to testy knife amd it failed again d closed again on my finger this time slicing into mi middle finger fairly deep and about an inch in length .

Looking iy once overnafter this i found that i cann hold both the blade and frame and with little force, close the knife with the lock completely faling.

I will be filing a clain with gerber abor this to at lease get a fully functional knife. I will be looking into other options now of crkt, spyderco, and emerson.

I say buyer bewaren on this product shortly after youbuy it.

  • |BY: unvisible805 , love it

i just got this knife and i love it. i was going to get the cold steel mini tac tanto, but when i saw this blade i thought it was alot sexier. i know alot of people say that it is a mystery metal used for the blade but the drop point version of this knife uses 440a stainless, so id assume it uses the same. for the price you cant go wrong. some people say that the lock on this fails, but mine hasnt. like everything made these days, not every knife is going to be 100%, so if yours isnt upto snuff just return it for another. or contact gerber and let them know the issue, they might be willing to exchange it. all in all i give this knife 5 out of 5 stars. cant go wrong with this beauty.

  • |BY: R.Craig , Wishful thinking

So right out of the box there was a chip. No big deal I reedged it. I sharpened it back to where it could shave the hair on my arm really clean. After maybe less than a month the blade went from being completely stiff and hard to open. It now with no pressure at all basically falls opens with the slightest motion. So unbelievablely unsafe. I had high hopes for this knife. I'm a big guy. 6'6 over 280lbs so small knives look stupid in my hand. So this knife would of been perfect. But that was wishful thinking. Even tightening the top screw doesn't help with the blade being loose while closed. I really liked this knife and I own 2 more gerbers so I just assumed this would be a great knife. Not all the case. So buyer beware. Maybe mine was a defect.

  • |BY: Thomas , Liked it

What can't be avoided is that this is a relatively cheap knife (I picked it up for $24). This could be good or bad. For good, well, you're not paying an arm and a leg for a knife. For bad, not great steel; manufacturing and quality control are not the best. I, however, liked it because it was a cheap, large knife that I wouldn't have to worry about damaging. Mine also opened really nice and smooth. I think it was definitely worth the money. I only wish there was a plain edge one.

I read all of the reviews and I didn’t want to believe them so I figured ok I will test this knife out. So I used the tip to open a drawer that slides with ease, well the tip broke off. I so sad I thought gerber was great, but like others has said USA made gerber’s are great the folders which are made in china suck. Thanks gerber I hope my Yari II I am getting for Christmas is batter.

I carry this knife everyday for over 1 year. I use it as you would a daily pocket knife. I once used it to cut several sable palm frons to get my tree stand free when it got hung up coming down. Anyone that hunts south Florida knows how hard it is to cut them without the serrated blade it would have been a nightmare. It has held up great to cutting leaders shark fishing the salt water has not rusted it. I do take care of my equipment cleaning and oiling every few weeks. Never had the screws come loose. Funny I came to the gerber site to order a few more for gifts and to have extra if they ever discontinue and was amazed at the poor reviews. I own many knives gerbers to the original cold steel tanto made in 86 that you can no longer buy. I would recommend for a daily pocket knife.

I've used this blade for a loooong time. The only problem that I have found (and several others too) is the clip. Granted that I use this for EVERYTHING, but it just won't stay in my pocket anymore. I still use it but I have to make sure it still in my pocket (every 5 minutes!) But other than that, Sharp as can be and sturdiest thing i've ever seen. Much love here.

I am disapointed in this knife because of the screws looseing. I don't have a torx-driver set so i'll have to go buy one if I want to keep this knife. I love the length of the blade and serrated edge is good for what i use it for, mainly utility use. Also, I prefer a folder to a fixed blade because I carry it in my pocket. Quality and reliablity is why I am so disapointed in this knive. No matter the price, if I were to put my name on a product I would adhere to a basic form of integrity. The idea of this knive is good but it has a big problem, screws looseing on the frame has to be reserved for china brands. BTW, I've only had this knife for 3 months, cmon!

I've had this knife for about a week now, and it has not been causing me too much trouble. The blade does nick kinda easily, but that's not too big of a deal to me. As far as the blade loosening on me, I did notice that happening a few days after I bought it and used it. However, all the screws on this knife can be re-tightened with a Torx-driver, so again, not that big of a deal for me.

If you were thinking of getting this knife, I would also recommend picking up a cheap Torx-driver set as well so you can tighten it when it gets loose.

I just purchased this knife a couple of weeks ago for a camping trip. I was excited when I purchased it as it seemed like a great knife. When i got to the great outdoors and clipped my new knife onto my side and went for a brief trek and reached down I jabbed myself with a partially opened blade. When clipped the blade opens down so it can easily become exposed.

  • |BY: Jason , So far so good

I had my icon for 3 years now. It is a good knife for outdoor use. I save my more expensive knives for the finer things, But I am pretty hard on my Icon and it never fails to make the cut. Day hiking, yard work, or being my bus stop buddy at night. this knife is a good value. My only complaints are the serrations, they are cool if you are 14. Gerber get back to made in the USA, list the blade material, and make more fine edge products... I have to respect my Gerber it is a tough knife.

The blade is so loose in the grip that it can partially open in my pocket, which led to some bandaid incidents. The blade is so poorly held in the grip that it hits one of the grip plate spacers, leaving a bad dent in the blade. Never buying a cheap Gerber again.

With out a doubt this knife is the best I have ever Had I worked in warehouse were i used it everyday as a box opener and it held its edge wonderfully for a bout 6 month then I would have to sharpen it I must have done this 3 or 4 times over a few years, then i joined the army and used it for my MOS in the 88 series when conducting some maintain on my truck, I also use it when tending to the horses mainly for shucking their hoofs the pointed handle end works vary well for getting around the shoe anyhow the blade finally broke after almost 4 years of having the knife so in turn its the best knife I have ever had I ordered my replacement blade a second ago then typed this review I strongly suggest this knife.

WhenI purchased this knife I thought I was getting the wonderful name of Gerber in yet another great knife. then I opened the package and used the knife. I used Gerber in my navy days and have two other Gerbers now, but this one was not to my fancy. the blade knicks easy, the clip is non reversable, will not hold edge well. for the price you could get a lot more knife with some other line in the gerber line up or other makers. not a bad knife just not what I was looking for

So far I'm pretty happy with the blade, but I don't know what the limitations could be since nobody knows what composition that blade has.
